A few notes on the new look and functions

There are still a few problems with using the various "Mumsnet Classic" options. However, for a lot of people matters are significantly improved if they press Refresh in their browse. If you're using Firefox, try pressing Shift+Refresh. At about 4:30am this morning after many hours of work, that made the classic option work well. Only a couple of minor layout issues remained.

Text is not meant to be squished, you're not supposed to have to scroll down through acres of whitespace. We'll definitely fix these issues.

I've no idea why people are finding text too tiny; the font size hasn't changed intentionally, so if it is tiny for you it's either a need to press refresh (to reload the style sheet, in tech speak) or a problem that will be fixed.

Threads I'm On and Threads I'm Watching should behave in the way they always did - they do for me. Let us know the specifics of problems you have with them and we'll address them.

We know about the problem of seeing "hide hide hide" across the top of the page. If you go in to customise (which my huge ENGLISH dictionary lists as being able to be spelled either customise OR customize) you can turn off showing of the Hide option which is a workaround for this problem. We'll fix it properly soon.

The ads have neither changed size nor increased in number.

Remember: Press REFRESH (and try SHIFT+REFRESH) a couple of times. It might help a lot.

For those having problems we do apologise and will sort it all as soon as we can. For those that hate it, perhaps you'll get used to it after a while and we'll improve the classic options (though I am using them now and they're working fine).

Oh and for the 2 of you that said thanks for all the hard work: thanks! It has taken over a dozen people a lot of hard work. We had to release it in a hurry and it's not perfect, but we'll get there.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 31/01/2009 23:06

(although if you can sort the firefox/wrapping out I will be loyal forever!!)

FrannyandZooey · 31/01/2009 23:08

are the margins / space on right hand side being altered please justine? did not see that on your list
i don't want to zoom in, it makes the font v large, nor minimise my browser window, thanks

ProfessorCalculus · 31/01/2009 23:09

Can we have some indication of whether a poster has a profile like we used to?

JustineMumsnet · 31/01/2009 23:13

Re Poster profile name is only supposed to show as a link if person has a profile - so that's another thing to add to the list.

Re margins - they are here to stay (unless we can add it as an customise option - i don't know the answer to that really but we will discuss the fixed width/scrolling thing and come back)

Anyway please bear with us - we'll get there.
(signing off to squeeze in an episode of the wire before bed, now)

Tiggiwinkle · 31/01/2009 23:21

Oh good it's in the centre again; I am very happy!

FrannyandZooey · 31/01/2009 23:24

yes it's better in middle
but still annoying imnvho

TheYearOfTheCat · 31/01/2009 23:31

Tis may have been mentioned, but what is happening to 'threads I'm on'? It used to be that if anyone added to a thread I was on, it was automatically brought to the top of the list, so I could see there was a new post. Now I have to trawl through all 'threads I'm on' to see if anyone has posted.

But it's getting better

IdrisTheDragon · 31/01/2009 23:34

Ooh it's in the middle again.

Better that way I think.

I agree about the thread titles, but this thread is very funny.

RustyBear · 31/01/2009 23:36

It also makes Thread juxtaposition funnier...

hunkermunker · 31/01/2009 23:37

All looks fine for me still.

Really like it still.

Thank you for the hard work, YourMajesticTechiness (actually, that last word might have another T in it somewhere after this week, eh?!).

Bubble99 · 01/02/2009 00:01

I like it.

Well done, Tech.

How's the weight loss going, BTW? I don't stand a hope of finding your thread now.

thumbwitch · 01/02/2009 00:05

Oh I am sorry but I really can't trawl through all the pages to see if this has been mentioned - I tried to do a search by poster name earlier, and despite the fact that I had been looking at a post by said poster only minutes earlier, it told me there were 0 posts by that poster. I checked dates, spelling of name etc. and they were correct.

Is there a problem with the Search facility at the mo?

KashaSarrasin · 01/02/2009 00:05

OK, I'm getting used to it now. Bits of it I even quite like

The one thing that's really bugging me still is the fixed width - I don't object to it in principle, it's just too *!$% wide!! Even when I've got my browser big enough (and the text small enough) I'm finding the line lengths too long to read comfortably. I'm ITA with the other posters that virtually all other fixed-width sites are significantly narrower in width than nouveau-MN.

Couldn't you just make it 25% narrower, or have a "narrow text" option for those of us who are having width issues? Please???

KashaSarrasin · 01/02/2009 00:07

That should read:

[...] browser big enough (and the text small enough) to avoid horizontal scrolling [...]

(time for bed)

TrinityRhino · 01/02/2009 00:08

When we will get thread read being purple again
its never mentioned on the updates of what you're working on

dittany · 01/02/2009 00:13

Message withdrawn at poster's request.

TheYearOfTheCat · 01/02/2009 00:27

Bubble99 - I doubt if you were talking to me, but my weight loss is going quite well thank you

TeenyTinyToria · 01/02/2009 01:26

Oh no, I missed the text being put back to the left! I'm MNing with my browser window about 3/4 the size it usually is to get rid of the margins lol!

littleoldme · 01/02/2009 03:29

Thanks for the shif and refresh tip. I'm happy again now. cheers Tech

Astrophe · 01/02/2009 07:15

When I click "Threads I'm watching" it takes me to a Talk topic list (I tried to say this below, but think I reffered to it as 'my messages' or something...well this is what I really meant!)

JustineMumsnet · 01/02/2009 09:12

You're doing better than me, Apostrophe, Threads I'm watching just comes up blank for me at the moment. Don't worry - it's on the list. We'll fix soonest.

simpson · 01/02/2009 09:15

TrinityRhino - think it was mentioned on the last update yesterday

The purple read thread thing works in the "new" set up just not classic. Grrr...

RubberDuck · 01/02/2009 09:15

Yep it is better centred - but please consider a little bit of white padding on the left for a few pixels so when the window is small the text doesn't disappear into the side.

It would look better with a very slight tinge of blue for margins beyond the thin strip of white padding either side too

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 01/02/2009 09:29

Is anyone else finding their hiding whole topics thing isn't working? I'm getting all the Special Needs threads in Active Convos. Now, I realise that objecting to that makes me sound like some weirdy Daily Mail reader who doesn't want to have to think about SN, but it's bugging me simply cos I know I've clicked to hide it.

Any clues?

NorktasticNinja · 01/02/2009 09:59

Well, after giving this new MN a good try I can safely say I love it.

The Techs, designers and all involved deserve massive credits IMHO, the site is clear, simple and really user friendly. Achieving this for such a complex site is no mean feat! New users will definitely find the new MN much more approachable and less intimidating than (my beloved) old MN.

Of course, there are a few annoying things (and some weirdy bits) but they are clearly bugs and bugs can be resolved. I can live with all that for as long as it takes.

Well done to everyone at MNHQ! Here are some chocolates, wine and a good sleep for you all.
