A few notes on the new look and functions

There are still a few problems with using the various "Mumsnet Classic" options. However, for a lot of people matters are significantly improved if they press Refresh in their browse. If you're using Firefox, try pressing Shift+Refresh. At about 4:30am this morning after many hours of work, that made the classic option work well. Only a couple of minor layout issues remained.

Text is not meant to be squished, you're not supposed to have to scroll down through acres of whitespace. We'll definitely fix these issues.

I've no idea why people are finding text too tiny; the font size hasn't changed intentionally, so if it is tiny for you it's either a need to press refresh (to reload the style sheet, in tech speak) or a problem that will be fixed.

Threads I'm On and Threads I'm Watching should behave in the way they always did - they do for me. Let us know the specifics of problems you have with them and we'll address them.

We know about the problem of seeing "hide hide hide" across the top of the page. If you go in to customise (which my huge ENGLISH dictionary lists as being able to be spelled either customise OR customize) you can turn off showing of the Hide option which is a workaround for this problem. We'll fix it properly soon.

The ads have neither changed size nor increased in number.

Remember: Press REFRESH (and try SHIFT+REFRESH) a couple of times. It might help a lot.

For those having problems we do apologise and will sort it all as soon as we can. For those that hate it, perhaps you'll get used to it after a while and we'll improve the classic options (though I am using them now and they're working fine).

Oh and for the 2 of you that said thanks for all the hard work: thanks! It has taken over a dozen people a lot of hard work. We had to release it in a hurry and it's not perfect, but we'll get there.

Has everybody else lost their watched threads list?

Ponders · 31/01/2009 21:28

yes

hewlettsdaughter · 31/01/2009 21:29

I can see mine, SPS. I can't see all of the word 'Search' at the top of the page though - 'arch' is obscured by the box (mumsnet/mumsnet talk/google).

ShinyPinkShoes · 31/01/2009 21:37

Am I the only one who just can't get on with this?

I think I will try again another day, it's doing my head in tonight!

Pixel · 31/01/2009 21:37

I hadn't even noticed the search box up there. Well what do you know? Scroll along and there's the moon too!

UniS · 31/01/2009 21:49

The fixed width is a pain when using a net book with a small screen.
Also when you need a big font to read.

RubberDuck · 31/01/2009 21:53

Tech, my point about the BBC site was that yes, it is centred, but it also has a slightly off-colour background to bring the eye to the actual text. It also has a hard left margin so that the text CANNOT merge into the line at the side of the browser - it has a minimum (5px?) white space.

Also, the thing you've missed about nearly every other fixed width site out there is that they are COLUMN-based sites. Look at any fixed width blog or the BBC site, or Flickr. Even if you have an 800x600 display, you can just scroll ONCE to have that particular column in view and read the entire post/article/thread without moving the scroll bar again. The stuff that's "hidden" is links off to the left or right and not the main text.

Here, you have to have 1024px wide screen to read the main text. That part is actually quite rare on the net.

dilbertina · 31/01/2009 21:53

Has anyone mentioned the smiley issue? If someone puts a smiley in it goes on top of the next word.

like this

at least it is on classic...

dilbertina · 31/01/2009 21:54

that said "like this" incidentally!

RubberDuck · 31/01/2009 21:55

...and I didn't get to see the coloured background Though would suggest combining that with a centred layout with fixed left buffer margin and the very pale blue that's used to highlight the search talk area.

RubberDuck · 31/01/2009 21:58

As I say, I like the design and the fixed width isn't a deal breaker for me (I have 1900px screen size, after all!) but I do feel sorry for those having to constantly scroll to read every line of a post - white space is slightly irritating but easily fixed by resizing your browser window... whereas constantly scrolling is getting you into RSI territory...

flubdub · 31/01/2009 22:10

Iv clicked "Use mumsnet classic options" and nothing has changed. WHY????????

RubberDuck · 31/01/2009 22:11

flub: I think you need to change the colours back to mumsnet classic too and then remember to press "save".

RiaParkinson · 31/01/2009 22:28

active convos does not work at all on SAFARI

RustyBear · 31/01/2009 22:35

It's fine on the iPhone version of Safari, Ria

DaDaDa · 31/01/2009 22:37

Ooooh. Swanky.

Zaftig · 31/01/2009 22:41

Please, PLEASE centre the text. Please.

I have my screen tilted now but it still hurts my eyes having the text over on the left.

AND it look stupid. Huge white margin on the right makes it look like the site isn't finished.

Even just a little margin on the left?? A little one? This ........ big?

SuperBunny · 31/01/2009 22:42

Will our 'Threads I'm on' be restored? Where have they all gone?

RustyBear · 31/01/2009 22:52

zaftig -zoom in & you can get rid of the margin

Zaftig · 31/01/2009 22:54

I don't mind the margin so much, it's just my tactic to make Tech put back the left one.

JustineMumsnet · 31/01/2009 22:59

Ok so updated list (nb most of this will not be addressed until after the weekend but we will get to it, promise)

Classic options in customise - making them stick

Active conversations - titles of threads truncated (this will be a couple of days)

Search button at top of pages not right

Search button required in advanced search

Classic - restoring actual Classic look (it's not quite right at the moment - active conversations text is too small, reads the wrong way, purple clicked on links etc)

Threads I'm on summary list restore (Thanks Rustybear)

minimum font size in firefox and text wrapping (see if we can solve)

media requests/ for sale first post not showing in some set ups

JustineMumsnet · 31/01/2009 23:01

OhYouBadBadKitten · 31/01/2009 23:05

oh I love you!!! its back in the middle - hooray.
Now I utterly dont't care about the wrapping issue cos i'm not having to sit all wonky.

I can go to bed a happy lady

FrannyandZooey · 31/01/2009 23:06

justine i am SO PLEASED the titles will be put back fully
it really makes a massive difference - the humour or drama of half the titles is completely lost
can't wait for this to be fixed
thanks for update
