A few notes on the new look and functions

There are still a few problems with using the various "Mumsnet Classic" options. However, for a lot of people matters are significantly improved if they press Refresh in their browse. If you're using Firefox, try pressing Shift+Refresh. At about 4:30am this morning after many hours of work, that made the classic option work well. Only a couple of minor layout issues remained.

Text is not meant to be squished, you're not supposed to have to scroll down through acres of whitespace. We'll definitely fix these issues.

I've no idea why people are finding text too tiny; the font size hasn't changed intentionally, so if it is tiny for you it's either a need to press refresh (to reload the style sheet, in tech speak) or a problem that will be fixed.

Threads I'm On and Threads I'm Watching should behave in the way they always did - they do for me. Let us know the specifics of problems you have with them and we'll address them.

We know about the problem of seeing "hide hide hide" across the top of the page. If you go in to customise (which my huge ENGLISH dictionary lists as being able to be spelled either customise OR customize) you can turn off showing of the Hide option which is a workaround for this problem. We'll fix it properly soon.

The ads have neither changed size nor increased in number.

Remember: Press REFRESH (and try SHIFT+REFRESH) a couple of times. It might help a lot.

For those having problems we do apologise and will sort it all as soon as we can. For those that hate it, perhaps you'll get used to it after a while and we'll improve the classic options (though I am using them now and they're working fine).

Oh and for the 2 of you that said thanks for all the hard work: thanks! It has taken over a dozen people a lot of hard work. We had to release it in a hurry and it's not perfect, but we'll get there.

hi tech, am also getting used to it, yet today in mumsnet classic options muted and classic, links are in dark blue, and not underlined. This makles them almost indistinguishable from the rest of the blac text.

thnaks

piratecat · 01/02/2009 10:13

just changed to new mumsnet version and the links are looking the same way there to. I can't remember what it was that did make them easier to spot, on old mumsnet ?(ah it's old mumsnet now, how quickley we forget!) I did think they were underlined ?

simpson · 01/02/2009 10:15

Piratecat - I agree...makes it hard to tell where the link is iyswim.

They were a darker colour before and went purple once they had been read/clicked on.

dramaqueen · 01/02/2009 10:24

How do I get out of "classic" and back to "new"? Not being able to see the whole thread title is really irritating so I was wonerding if it had been changed in "new" yet

robinpud · 01/02/2009 10:28

The centring is much better. and as Rusty says you can zoom in if you want,
I still can't see threads I'm on in a different colour, but can learn to cope with this as long as the margins at each side don't get filled up with adverts.
Keep at it tech please.. thanks!

FrannyandZooey · 01/02/2009 11:17

zooming in doesn't solve the margins - the font goes larger too and you only get about 2 posts on the page

pavlovthecat · 01/02/2009 11:42

I like it. I have not browsed around yet today, and I expect there to be some minor issues still but I think I like it a lot.

Well done the people in Tech. We needed a change.

BigGitDad · 01/02/2009 11:44

I agree about the links it is difficult to see if there is one.

FairyLightsForever · 01/02/2009 11:50

Wow, I hadn't checked in since you went off line Thursday and now it's all shiney and new! Good work Tech

RiaParkinson · 01/02/2009 12:07

still cannot get active convos on safari
it just loads....and loads...and loads....

wheresthehamster · 01/02/2009 12:25

Oh no - back in the middle. Headache coming on...

YetMoreTech · 01/02/2009 12:53

Could anyone who has a problem with viewing the full width of a post please send us a screen shot?

pobletsmum · 01/02/2009 13:07

I'm just catching up, so apologies if this is a known problem, but I can't see it on the 'to fix' list.

On the 'Home' page, some of the text is cut off on the right-hand edge of the 'Product reviews' section.

Also, at the top of each page, the drop-down menu for the search fuction obscures part of the word 'search' - well what I assume should say 'search' anyway!

Thanks to Tech and team for all their hard work. I hope you'll all get a rest soon.

piratecat · 01/02/2009 13:34

hi tech i have just taken 2 pics for you, will send them now.

YetMoreTech · 01/02/2009 13:35

Thanks PirateCat. Screen shots are an enormous help.

OP posts:
KnickKnack · 01/02/2009 13:45

If you posted a list of the screenshots you still need I could send in one or two (at this stage I end up assuming that you've got most of what you need, and that you're inundated with email/suggestions etc)

KnickKnack · 01/02/2009 13:52

For anyone who wants to learn how to do a screen shot:
Instructions
Its easy peasy (honest!)

YetMoreTech · 01/02/2009 13:56

PirateCat,

The problem on your screen is that you've got a "Favourites" window open on the left side of your screen and that's taking up some space. It's not taking up much, because you've made it as small as it can be (so small in fact presumably you can't use it) but it's enough to make our new design not quite fit on the screen. Close that, by clicking the X at the top of it and I think your problem will be solved.

Try it and let me know.

YetMoreTech · 01/02/2009 13:57

KnickKnack,

We have tested the new site in a variety of browsers (mainly Internet Explorer 6 and 7, Firefox 2 and 3, Safari, iPhone) so we know what it looks like in general - as such we don't need screenshots if all is well. However, what are really really useful are screenshots of problems - if you're having a problem by all means send a screenshot. And thanks for linking to the instructions on how to create them

FiveGoMadInDorset · 01/02/2009 14:02

Still can't change options in customise.
Still have SN coming up in active convos even though it shouldn't on my settings.
Still can't see sny adverts in FFP, media, jobs adverts etc.

YetMoreTech · 01/02/2009 14:07

Still working on it

OP posts:
FiveGoMadInDorset · 01/02/2009 14:12

Have you gone home yet or are you camping out?

policywonk · 01/02/2009 14:22

Have no problem with the new look in general (in fact it looks almost exactly the same to me and am baffled by all the fuss!)

However, here's one glitch for the list:

when you're in a thread and you click through to someone's profile, there doesn't seem to be a way back to the thread, or even to active convos. The best I can do is go back to the Talk home page and go back to ACs from there. Which is a bit annoying. (The 'Back' button on the browser is greyed out when on profile pages.)

policywonk · 01/02/2009 14:23

Durr, it's opening in a new window. Please ignore me.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/02/2009 14:24

Yetmoretech - have sent you a screenshot of the firefox 3 minimum font problem.
