A few notes on the new look and functions

There are still a few problems with using the various "Mumsnet Classic" options. However, for a lot of people matters are significantly improved if they press Refresh in their browse. If you're using Firefox, try pressing Shift+Refresh. At about 4:30am this morning after many hours of work, that made the classic option work well. Only a couple of minor layout issues remained.

Text is not meant to be squished, you're not supposed to have to scroll down through acres of whitespace. We'll definitely fix these issues.

I've no idea why people are finding text too tiny; the font size hasn't changed intentionally, so if it is tiny for you it's either a need to press refresh (to reload the style sheet, in tech speak) or a problem that will be fixed.

Threads I'm On and Threads I'm Watching should behave in the way they always did - they do for me. Let us know the specifics of problems you have with them and we'll address them.

We know about the problem of seeing "hide hide hide" across the top of the page. If you go in to customise (which my huge ENGLISH dictionary lists as being able to be spelled either customise OR customize) you can turn off showing of the Hide option which is a workaround for this problem. We'll fix it properly soon.

The ads have neither changed size nor increased in number.

Remember: Press REFRESH (and try SHIFT+REFRESH) a couple of times. It might help a lot.

For those having problems we do apologise and will sort it all as soon as we can. For those that hate it, perhaps you'll get used to it after a while and we'll improve the classic options (though I am using them now and they're working fine).

Oh and for the 2 of you that said thanks for all the hard work: thanks! It has taken over a dozen people a lot of hard work. We had to release it in a hurry and it's not perfect, but we'll get there.

I can't see any difference at all.

RubberDuck · 31/01/2009 15:08

Jas - you'll need to hard refresh again - ctrl-f5 on a PC, cmd-shift-R on a mac.

Tiggiwinkle · 31/01/2009 15:11

I much preferred it centralised myself. Now I have a huge blank space on the right and would prefer space either side.

simpson · 31/01/2009 15:19

Please don't forget about the purple thread thing.....

Tiggiwinkle · 31/01/2009 15:23

Are you on the "new version" simpson? The purple threads thing started working for me yesterday.

TheInvisibleManDidIt · 31/01/2009 15:24

Can someone tell me what just happened there? My page has just jumped from being centralised to all on the right.

Tiggi, yours too?

Have I pressed something?

Tiggiwinkle · 31/01/2009 15:26

Tech is experimenting I think TIMDI!

simpson · 31/01/2009 15:29

Tiggi - no am on classic.

Is it worth switching do you think?

Caz10 · 31/01/2009 15:37

Thank you thank you thank you for moving the text to the left. I actually thought I'd have to stop MNing last night, couldn't cope with the centralised text at all!

Zaftig · 31/01/2009 15:39

Me no likey the text squashed on the left. Now have mahoosive right border. Bring back the white margins!

Tech, don't listen to that lot, the margins were much better.

Zaftig · 31/01/2009 15:42

I don't think I put my post strongly enough.

I HATE HATE HATE the text moved to the left. HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATE.

HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATE.

There. Much better.

TheInvisibleManDidIt · 31/01/2009 15:43

As opinions seem divided would a bit a huge amount of work to let us pick left side or centralised in the customised bit?

Sorry, not overly techie so don't know if this as simple as pressing a button or spending 2 weeks grinding over the keyboards?

Jas · 31/01/2009 15:47

Rubberduck - I have....still looks the same. I'm not complaining though, as it is all central and no scrolling needed here. Active convos are now cut short below the ad, leaving that space empty, which I think is new, but everything else is good.

TrinityRhino · 31/01/2009 15:49

tech serioulsy why would you thuink that havin 3 inches of white whther its on the left or both side is a good idea

WHYYYY?????????????

simpson · 31/01/2009 16:03

Ok have now switched to the "new style" and the purple threads thing is working

But pretty please can we have it working on classic too...

Also don't know if this has been mentioned but when I clicked in active convos it said I had made the most recent post on this thread but the post next to my name wasn't me iyswim.

AMumInScotland · 31/01/2009 16:04

I prefer it over to the left!

IdrisTheDragon · 31/01/2009 16:05

Now there is a big space on the right and no space on the left.

CAn't decide which I prefer.

RubberDuck · 31/01/2009 16:05

Trinity - because it's a fixed width design. It's really really common on the net now - as I pointed out earlier even the BBC use a fixed width design!

The issues here seem to be that there is not enough gap left for the left margin on small screens and unlike many fixed width sites, there isn't a different colour to demarcate between the reading area with the expanding background. Then there is an additional issue that there is a significant minority whose screen resolution is lower than the fixed width size, forcing them to scroll to read everything.

so unless i have a better gigh def monitor i wil defh ave to scroll?

RustyBear · 31/01/2009 16:31

Starlight - does having it nover to the left solve your problem?

RubberDuck · 31/01/2009 16:31

Well asking them to change it from a fixed width site to a variable width is basically asking them to redesign the whole lot from scratch again, I'd have thought?

Unless they just make the fixedness less wide - what resolution monitor do you have? 800x600? That'll make it even narrower for those complaining of all the white space.

That's the biggest disadvantage of a fixed width design, imo. It ends up not really suiting anybody.

TheThoughtPolice · 31/01/2009 16:35

Can I just say that whaever adjustmenst were made to fix MN classic over night (or at least since 6pm last night) are MUCH better. The positioning and layout is much more like 'old MN' and more comfortable to read. Thanks Tech !

RubberDuck · 31/01/2009 16:35

Basically, it seems they've gambled on everyone having a 1024px wide screen as minimum - which, if you have the window maximised - means that everything will fit perfectly. Clearly, that was a bad gamble.

SoupDragon · 31/01/2009 16:36

Go to netmums/babyworld/tickersRus for a month. By the end, your eyes will be hurting so much that this will be bliss.
