A few notes on the new look and functions

There are still a few problems with using the various "Mumsnet Classic" options. However, for a lot of people matters are significantly improved if they press Refresh in their browse. If you're using Firefox, try pressing Shift+Refresh. At about 4:30am this morning after many hours of work, that made the classic option work well. Only a couple of minor layout issues remained.

Text is not meant to be squished, you're not supposed to have to scroll down through acres of whitespace. We'll definitely fix these issues.

I've no idea why people are finding text too tiny; the font size hasn't changed intentionally, so if it is tiny for you it's either a need to press refresh (to reload the style sheet, in tech speak) or a problem that will be fixed.

Threads I'm On and Threads I'm Watching should behave in the way they always did - they do for me. Let us know the specifics of problems you have with them and we'll address them.

We know about the problem of seeing "hide hide hide" across the top of the page. If you go in to customise (which my huge ENGLISH dictionary lists as being able to be spelled either customise OR customize) you can turn off showing of the Hide option which is a workaround for this problem. We'll fix it properly soon.

The ads have neither changed size nor increased in number.

Remember: Press REFRESH (and try SHIFT+REFRESH) a couple of times. It might help a lot.

For those having problems we do apologise and will sort it all as soon as we can. For those that hate it, perhaps you'll get used to it after a while and we'll improve the classic options (though I am using them now and they're working fine).

Oh and for the 2 of you that said thanks for all the hard work: thanks! It has taken over a dozen people a lot of hard work. We had to release it in a hurry and it's not perfect, but we'll get there.

But do you still have to go as far to the right as you did? Try refresh again (ctrl-f5) if you haven't done that since YMT changed it (at about 3 o'clock) & see if it's any better

TheInvisibleManDidIt · 31/01/2009 16:44

RubberDuck, not very knowledgeable about these things, but in my display settings it says my resolution is 1440x 900. Should I change that? I've got about 5" of white on the right of my screen.

But then if I change it it will muck up other web pages won't it?

Ah never mind. I can live with it

FrannyandZooey · 31/01/2009 16:45

god it was better in the middle lol!
tech you know what, you have made the margins either side seem desirable by comparison
nice work

squeaver · 31/01/2009 16:45

My twopen'orth...

I think I prefer it on the left - have spent longer on here today than yesterday anyway.

I get what people are saying about the text being too small - DWP had a good suggestion on another thread about using zoom in your browser to increase the size of the text.

I HATE the ads at the top of threads.

Don't like not being able to see the previous comments in threads I'm on. Also, on some of them it's telling me I made the last comment but I didn't. That's quite confusing.

Overall...while I can't see the need for change, I don't really mind it. We'll all get used to it.

RubberDuck · 31/01/2009 16:46

No your resolution is good TIMDI - white is annoying but at least you can read everything on the screen... if the white really annoys you, you could do what I do and not have the browser window maximised and then just resize as you prefer

RubberDuck · 31/01/2009 16:47

(My resolution is 1900px wide... you can imagine how much white space I would get if I could be arsed to maximise the window )

RustyBear · 31/01/2009 16:50

wheresthehamster - I'm now noticing the 'hide' more since you've mentioned it - it's amazing how often it actually seems to answer the question

What can be done about these kids? hide

Moving to Manchester - and I have no idea where to go. ... hide

What do you do when life feels a bit "flat"? hide

What is the law regarding bf in public places? hide

and

What do you wear to an opera? hide

Could become another game like the Thread juxtaposition one...

piratecat · 31/01/2009 16:52

i am just very amazed that if i have to now scroll, why don't i have to scroll, on any other pages on any other site. Tis includes other forums, car related and music sites. Which have an almost identical layout to this new mumsent layout.

Not having a go, at all, it just seems like it's very odd it's only here. I wish there was something i could try. I have tried my screen res, which can go higher, despite me having and old pc and monitor! Yet this results in teeny weeny writing, and screen size.

TheInvisibleManDidIt · 31/01/2009 16:52

Lol. Yup, have taken it off maximum and pulled the right side in and moved it to the middle of my screen.

Not that it really matters.

Quite like the calm blue and wee purple buttons on the new style

Tinker · 31/01/2009 17:04

Are the threads you've looked at still not meant to be turning purple yet? Is that still to be fixed?

TheInvisibleManDidIt · 31/01/2009 17:09

Mine do Tinker.

LowSlungAndOverhung · 31/01/2009 17:14

Soooooo much better with no left margin!

Can someone tell me where the 'reset this thread' option has gone?

TheInvisibleManDidIt · 31/01/2009 17:22

Top left side for me Frizbe, under the page number.

ChasingSquirrels · 31/01/2009 17:22

reset?

TheInvisibleManDidIt · 31/01/2009 17:25

Thats where to refresh this thread is anyway, assume that was what you meant?

Frizbe · 31/01/2009 17:25

Its not there for me?? used to be with the add, watch, etc bit??? CS, its for resetting the threads your watching, so you can clear it, when you've read upto a certain bit!

IdrisTheDragon · 31/01/2009 17:25

I don't have threads I have looked at changing colour yet either.

Frizbe · 31/01/2009 17:26

yep, reset not refresh! will check back later.

simpson · 31/01/2009 17:36

Tinker if you don't use the classic look but the new one then the purple threads thing works...

ChasingSquirrels · 31/01/2009 17:47

my active convo's is ony 20 threads - despite being set at 50, and saying 50 at the top.
