A few notes on the new look and functions

There are still a few problems with using the various "Mumsnet Classic" options. However, for a lot of people matters are significantly improved if they press Refresh in their browse. If you're using Firefox, try pressing Shift+Refresh. At about 4:30am this morning after many hours of work, that made the classic option work well. Only a couple of minor layout issues remained.

Text is not meant to be squished, you're not supposed to have to scroll down through acres of whitespace. We'll definitely fix these issues.

I've no idea why people are finding text too tiny; the font size hasn't changed intentionally, so if it is tiny for you it's either a need to press refresh (to reload the style sheet, in tech speak) or a problem that will be fixed.

Threads I'm On and Threads I'm Watching should behave in the way they always did - they do for me. Let us know the specifics of problems you have with them and we'll address them.

We know about the problem of seeing "hide hide hide" across the top of the page. If you go in to customise (which my huge ENGLISH dictionary lists as being able to be spelled either customise OR customize) you can turn off showing of the Hide option which is a workaround for this problem. We'll fix it properly soon.

The ads have neither changed size nor increased in number.

Remember: Press REFRESH (and try SHIFT+REFRESH) a couple of times. It might help a lot.

For those having problems we do apologise and will sort it all as soon as we can. For those that hate it, perhaps you'll get used to it after a while and we'll improve the classic options (though I am using them now and they're working fine).

Oh and for the 2 of you that said thanks for all the hard work: thanks! It has taken over a dozen people a lot of hard work. We had to release it in a hurry and it's not perfect, but we'll get there.

Haven't read through entire thread.

On the whole I really like the new look site. My only criticism is that when you're looking through I'm on, there's not such a clear definition between threads, could the thread title font be made darker or something?

Meant to add, the shortcuts bit at the bottom is genius.

RustyBear · 31/01/2009 13:05

No Starlight! Don't make me lose control....

RustyBear · 31/01/2009 13:15

Justine - I've been trying to help people like Starlight who have to keep scrolling horizontally to see the whole page - I think this is probably the worst problem, even though it only affects a few people. Could you ask tech if he has any suggestions for them? - we've been trying different screen resolutions, but this has an impact on text size & it's getting a bit fraught

tootiredtothink · 31/01/2009 13:19

Thank you Rusty, that's exactly what I meant to say.

Justine, how lovely of you to pretend it's you being slow.

TrinityRhino · 31/01/2009 13:24

DONT FORGET THE PURPLE THREADS AFTER YOU@VE BEEN ON THEM
I NEED THEM

JustineMumsnet · 31/01/2009 13:39

Ok so updated list (nb most of this will not be addressed until after the weekend but we will get to it, promise)

Scrolling issue when browser size small

Classic options in customise - making them stick

Active conversations - titles of threads truncated (this will be a couple of days)

Change CustomiZe to CustomiSe

Search button at top of pages not right

Search button required in advanced search

Classic - restoring actual Classic look (it's not quite right at the moment - active conversations text is too small, reads the wrong way, purple clicked on links etc)

Threads I'm on summary list restore (Thanks Rustybear)

RubberDuck · 31/01/2009 13:43

Justine: topic search is also broken - you can't move available topics over to chosen topics, the buttons don't work. Neither can you load favourites.

RubberDuck · 31/01/2009 13:46

For the fixed width issues, I would suggest you approached it as some other fixed width sites do... have a fixed distance on the left hand side, and when the window is bigger than the fixed width have the huge blank space on the right (which isn't so distracting) rather than trying to centralise it.

The scrolling for small screens wouldn't be quite so annoying with a decent buffer on the left, and the huge white space for those with large screen real-estate won't be as distracting.

wheresthehamster · 31/01/2009 13:54

I've decided to use 'New' for a while and have been getting along really well. Until now... I'm not sure if the fonts on the titles in active convos are smaller or 'hide' is bigger BUT I have just read -

How do you suddenly believe in something you didn't hide
To think it's fine for a boy to wear this...hide
I don't know what to do any more please help us hide

Slatterns are steaming ahead in the new year, come and hide

Anyone else? Or just me?

10weeks · 31/01/2009 13:55

"watched threads" summery list restore as well please!

RustyBear · 31/01/2009 13:59

I turned the hide function off yesterday when they were ganging up & forming a picket line across the top of the page. I've just turned it back on & they have appeared, but for me the difference in font is sufficient that it doesn't seem confusing.

frasersmummy · 31/01/2009 14:12

I know its really petty but...

are we getting the games page back .. you had some really addictive ones on there..

i know I can find them on other sites but i liked to have a play inbetween posts

wuglet · 31/01/2009 14:43

Wellll...
Yesterday I tried it and wasn't keen - the blue was too light so I went back to classic.

But today I have tried it again and it is better.

Also I don't think anyone has said yet but the time in "last post added" (or whatever it is - on active convos) is 12hrs behind.

Well done.

And working on a Saturday too

LucyEllensmummy · 31/01/2009 14:45

I never knew about the games bit

YetMoreTech · 31/01/2009 14:53

Have changed "Customize" to "Customise", despite the latest edition of the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary listing it as "Customize" with "Customise" as the secondary option, not the other way around.

We also know about the multiple "hide" links. And "Threads I'm Watching" being empty. And the dates on some pages being screwy.

YetMoreTech · 31/01/2009 14:57

As an experiment I have changed the main layout so that it is aligned to the left of the browser of window. Any feedback on that change?

OP posts:
Jas · 31/01/2009 14:58

Thankyou YMT I know it was correct as customize, but I for one am very happy you have changed it

OhYouBadBadKitten · 31/01/2009 14:58

I prefer it in the middle please! Its now all one one side of the screen with just under half the page being white.
I think if it were centralised with coloured margins, that would be nice

wheresthehamster · 31/01/2009 15:02

Yes the left is better - don't listen to anyone not liking it!

RubberDuck · 31/01/2009 15:03

The other alternative is to have it centralised but a minimum distance from the left (about as much as you currently have in the fixed distance). Would that please both camps?

BBC News site is a good example. They have a slightly different colour around the fixed bit so the huge space isn't as glaring, but also have a minimum distance on the left, so you always have at least some white space before the text hits.

Uriel · 31/01/2009 15:03

Think left is better. Though I keep shifting over to the left of the chair!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 31/01/2009 15:03

Justine - is there anyway to fix the problem that if you set a minimum font size greater than 'none' in firefox then the text wrapping around the advert boxes/mumsnet latest boxes doesnt work properly?

Prob not a huge priority.... I think there are bigger issues for some.
Thanks

OhYouBadBadKitten · 31/01/2009 15:04

Rubberduck - I do prefer the way the BBC do it.
