A few notes on the new look and functions

There are still a few problems with using the various "Mumsnet Classic" options. However, for a lot of people matters are significantly improved if they press Refresh in their browse. If you're using Firefox, try pressing Shift+Refresh. At about 4:30am this morning after many hours of work, that made the classic option work well. Only a couple of minor layout issues remained.

Text is not meant to be squished, you're not supposed to have to scroll down through acres of whitespace. We'll definitely fix these issues.

I've no idea why people are finding text too tiny; the font size hasn't changed intentionally, so if it is tiny for you it's either a need to press refresh (to reload the style sheet, in tech speak) or a problem that will be fixed.

Threads I'm On and Threads I'm Watching should behave in the way they always did - they do for me. Let us know the specifics of problems you have with them and we'll address them.

We know about the problem of seeing "hide hide hide" across the top of the page. If you go in to customise (which my huge ENGLISH dictionary lists as being able to be spelled either customise OR customize) you can turn off showing of the Hide option which is a workaround for this problem. We'll fix it properly soon.

The ads have neither changed size nor increased in number.

Remember: Press REFRESH (and try SHIFT+REFRESH) a couple of times. It might help a lot.

For those having problems we do apologise and will sort it all as soon as we can. For those that hate it, perhaps you'll get used to it after a while and we'll improve the classic options (though I am using them now and they're working fine).

Oh and for the 2 of you that said thanks for all the hard work: thanks! It has taken over a dozen people a lot of hard work. We had to release it in a hurry and it's not perfect, but we'll get there.

I like most of it, but have the same issues as a few people.

The thread title thing (I know you're onto it) is irritating, but the worst bit is the gaps at the sides.

I have a 17inch monitor, not that huge really. And I have 3 inch gaps on either side of the text (so 6 inches of screen unused)

It does make the whole thing a bit bright and in your face...

Astrophe · 31/01/2009 09:56

Maybe lots of people have already said this, but for me "my messages" takes me to a topics list.

piratecat · 31/01/2009 09:58

silverfrog, isn't it strange that you have gaps, and my text is so far to the left, there is no character space. Then the text goes out of the screen, it's a bit like having widescreen tv, for me!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 31/01/2009 10:07

A help page for firefox users.
Hasn't cured my problems but at least I understand them now!

BigTech · 31/01/2009 10:20

Good Morning All,

Thank you pavlov for the understanding that nothing can be perfect the first time and we are working hard to fix all problems, even on a Saturday, to make your Mumsnet a more comfortable place to be.

Thank you all for your patience and suggestions.

Have a lovely weekend.

pavlovthecat · 31/01/2009 10:27

Aw thanks BigTech, nice you noticed my post in the hundreds of post here...have a good weekend yourself

ChasingSquirrels · 31/01/2009 10:32

ok - so threads changing colours and different highlighting of lnks.
I kept changing my options and getting nothing.
Because I was on MC classic and even though I changed options it was still MN classic.
So change to MN New and it all comes flooding through.

REALLY like it.

But needs to highlight sticky threads as such?

FrannyandZooey · 31/01/2009 10:42

does anyone feel bigtech is getting very slightly tetchy

you could be BigTetch and then we would be prewarned

I really appreciate he work that has gone into this and have only two tiny observations ...

1 Bring back the icons instead of having report post and contact poster. They can be muted icons not red and yellow. Not keen on the writing in full idea on each thread instead

  1. Margins could be reduced, then I could see the last poster instead of it being overwritten by ads...

otherwise FAB WORK - Thanks

I like it and it seems to work better on my mobile device than the old version.

Advanced Search is tricky to use without a visible search button.
.searchbutton class needs looking at.
Perhaps replace the button reference with the same code as the other search button /new/images/search_purp.gif

catweazle · 31/01/2009 11:42

Am I being dense or can we no longer "find new messages" in our favourite topics?

nannynick · 31/01/2009 11:44

YMT - Google API code is reporting an error, no maps are displayed. Changing the Server IP address could have caused that.

Notquitegrownup · 31/01/2009 12:07

Sorry - haven't read all the messages, but -

what has happened to all of my "Threads I am watching" - they've gone, and I really really need them!

mustrunmore · 31/01/2009 12:08

Sorry, there's so much to read about all theses changes, and i cant... but I'm just desperate to go back to mn classic Help! I've clicked on it and clicked on save, and done all sorts of voodoo ritual, but I cant get it. Someone tell me the secret. I really dont have to time to mess bout with this; I wanna just do it...

mustrunmore - for me, the save classic didn't work until I had signed in to My Mumsnet - with my email address, not just my Talk name. But other people are saying that didn't work for them, so it may have been a coincidence. You may have to change and save both the Use Mumsnet Classic options and the Classic colour scheme to get it right - and then refresh the page once you've done it.

I was only trying it to see what worked, as I prefer the New version anyway, so I don't really want to try again in case I get stuck on Classic, but I think that's what I did,

GaryFinlayIsInnocent · 31/01/2009 12:39

I like it too.. and I am a huge change resister in real life

Only one problem for me - when not logged into a topic area the threads display beautifully with used links back in purple and all perfectly in tables, but as soon as I log in all that formatting goes away and we just have rather unreadable lines and no used links..

They'll get there with fixing it - s'complicated innit.

tootiredtothink · 31/01/2009 12:47

I think what I'm missing is the ability to look at threads I'm on, click to the last post I knew I had read and carry on from there - if that makes any sense????

Now I'm having to trawl through all the posts again {lazy arse emoticon].

Can you add that to your list Justine pleeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaassssssssee?

TIA

JustineMumsnet · 31/01/2009 12:48

Morning all. For those who are pressed for time here's a summary of the problems that we know about and are still working on:

Threads I'm watching disappearing

Classic options in customise - making them stick

Active conversations - titles of threads truncated (this will be a couple of days)

Change CustomiZe to CustomiSe

Search button at top of pages not right

Search button required in advanced search

Classic - restoring actual Classic look (it's not quite right at the moment - active conversations text is too small, reads the wrong way etc)

SOME KEY THINGS TO MAKE IT MORE LIKELY TO WORK FOR YOU:

Remember to refresh your page a couple of times.

If you are setting to Classic options try setting colour option to MN sober first, and press save a couple of times

JustineMumsnet · 31/01/2009 12:49

tootiredtothink I'm not sure what you mean - can you explain a bit more - sorry for being slow?

Justine - also missing are the boxes which you advertise in on media, jobs, ffp, etc

RustyBear · 31/01/2009 12:57

I think she means that in Threads I'm on in New Mumsnet, you don't get a 'summary' list of the posts since your last one. In the old days (ie Thursday ) you could click on one of those posts & get taken straight to that post, so you would rejoin the thread where you left off. Now this list isn't available in New, (though it is in all the other options,) you have to go back to a thread at the beginning and scroll down (or up) to find where you left off.

I find this annoying too, it's the only thing I don't like about New, though if you use Ctrl-F & enter your name you can step down all your posts to get to your last one, which helps a bit.
