A few notes on the new look and functions

There are still a few problems with using the various "Mumsnet Classic" options. However, for a lot of people matters are significantly improved if they press Refresh in their browse. If you're using Firefox, try pressing Shift+Refresh. At about 4:30am this morning after many hours of work, that made the classic option work well. Only a couple of minor layout issues remained.

Text is not meant to be squished, you're not supposed to have to scroll down through acres of whitespace. We'll definitely fix these issues.

I've no idea why people are finding text too tiny; the font size hasn't changed intentionally, so if it is tiny for you it's either a need to press refresh (to reload the style sheet, in tech speak) or a problem that will be fixed.

Threads I'm On and Threads I'm Watching should behave in the way they always did - they do for me. Let us know the specifics of problems you have with them and we'll address them.

We know about the problem of seeing "hide hide hide" across the top of the page. If you go in to customise (which my huge ENGLISH dictionary lists as being able to be spelled either customise OR customize) you can turn off showing of the Hide option which is a workaround for this problem. We'll fix it properly soon.

The ads have neither changed size nor increased in number.

Remember: Press REFRESH (and try SHIFT+REFRESH) a couple of times. It might help a lot.

For those having problems we do apologise and will sort it all as soon as we can. For those that hate it, perhaps you'll get used to it after a while and we'll improve the classic options (though I am using them now and they're working fine).

Oh and for the 2 of you that said thanks for all the hard work: thanks! It has taken over a dozen people a lot of hard work. We had to release it in a hurry and it's not perfect, but we'll get there.

Hello. just got back to MN this evenign after a trip to the out of hours doctor so I'm too fed up to read whole thread.

Can I stop active convos looking so bloody small? I'm in MN classic I think - takes up less space on the page.

gigglewitch · 31/01/2009 00:13

another thing, sorry if somebody has already asked, but I'm used to having threads that i have clicked on previously, showing up as a different colour... maybe that is what i get for choosing "muted" off to peruse the options again i think....

gigglewitch · 31/01/2009 00:17

ok, i tried it, it's a no.
Please could we have links we've visited on the talkboard / active convo's showing up in purple or whatever (again) please??

LucyEllensmummy · 31/01/2009 00:19

well i don't know what happened there - I pressed refresh and did mumsnet new and i really like it. SO i'm eating my words - stuff like that always reminds me of the mellow birds advert - "We don't like change"!! How true it is.

Starlight, your window has to be maximised (in firefox). Tis a pain

alipiggie · 31/01/2009 03:53

So I work in IT, but I find this new site hard to read. Maybe it's my old eyes, but I found it a shock yesterday when I landed here after a few busy days. I like definition at the edge of pages too much white hurts the eyes. Sorry guys. I'm sure if I posted more and surfed more through the threads the changes would appeal, but mainly the Expats and I communicate here. I'll reserve judgment on the rest.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 31/01/2009 05:18

It just seems like a bit of a drag now.
Where there were 10 posts on the screen there are now just 3.

I tried setting my browser text smaller but it didn't help and makes other sites impossible.

I really, really want it back to the old school.

Oh and Justine please reveal what you are wearing for the book launch. Some of us are stressing over our outfits.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 31/01/2009 06:11

Oh and in chat and aibu the notes appear the same as the posts so when you open it that's the first thing you read. Not good.

nooka · 31/01/2009 06:12

I think I just wish Tech had been a bit more honest when the beta test was up. It was said on several occasions that there would be a no change option, which meant that many of us didn't really look at the new set up with a very focused eye, because we knew we liked it the way it was and that the new look wasn't for us. I'm now not at all sure that even with the bugs that have come with this update fixed things will actually be the same in classic. I didn't think things were completely perfect before, but a lot of the changes seem really poorly thought out (like the difficulty in reading the new look because it is too pale/bright) given that there are a wide range of people using this site surely access issues shold have been thought about - there is plenty of guidance out there about high contrast text for example.

PadDad · 31/01/2009 06:44

Please bring back the 'Threads from the last 24 hours'.

It was the one I used most, and I'm not the only one to have mentioned this.

Furball · 31/01/2009 06:55

same as nooka

Wouldn't be so bad if we could change the colour scheme, it's sooooo wishy washy and bling it's not good.

Well it is good for my life as I probably won't spend hours on here.

Furball · 31/01/2009 06:58

ps - you probably already know this but there is not button to search with on the advanced search page

YMC · 31/01/2009 07:53

My box is maximised but I am still having to scroll from right to left to read. And the first character is missing from the left hand side - there is no margin.

Using firefox.

clumber · 31/01/2009 08:20

Can we have more instructions about putting topics into the box on advanced search. I click on the arrows but nothing happens.

Is it just me then?

pavlovthecat · 31/01/2009 08:55

I am getting a tad annoyed with having to scroll down past enormous adverts for the lottery or somesuch before I get to the posts. I am sure they have paid lots of sponsorship money, but I am not on here to stare at adverts. please tell us they are not meant to be this way?

I am guessing this is one of the many teething problems going on. I have no idea whether I am n classic or new. I guess its new as its all different.

I love the front of it, its nice and clear and simple. And its modern looking. But its a faf to move around it right now. And, did I mention the advert sizes pissing me off?

Saltire · 31/01/2009 08:55

I reset to MN classic and found the active convos to be too small, the topics were tiny and the words were too difficult to read. I now have it in teh plae blue colour scheme with the active convos set up as new and I must admit I find it ok

10weeks · 31/01/2009 09:05

I've given up with watched threads.

You can't tell if they've been updated unless you remember how many posts there had been last time you visited and if it's a long thread you have to scroll all the way through it to find where you'd read to.

pavlovthecat · 31/01/2009 09:10

I have just pressed refresh, thinking why on earth would that help? What a silly thing to say, and you know what? The new website looks great now! The advert problems are gone, back to normal sized ones at the sides, the 'all-over-the-place-ness' that was going on with font sizes, thread titles not being complete etc - that is all sorted. And now, I like it.

So...if you are having trouble still...just press refresh! It might work for you!

Aha - I have solved my large blank box problem at the top of the thread. I have vision problems so in Firefox I have set Minimum font size to 20. When I set it to 0 my problem is solved. But now the header font is far far too small to read.

Please Tech - when you are feeling less sleep deprived please can you configure it so that those of us who struggle with our eyes can read the site without issue.....

FrannyandZooey · 31/01/2009 09:34

right, i am getting used to it
probably just reiterating what others have said, but i don't like the white margins down each side - just seems pointless
and active convos is very hard to read now - font of the topic part is much too small, the colours aren't helping, and you can't see the whole of each title

piratecat · 31/01/2009 09:38

have mentioned it before but am having the same probs as ymc, box maximised but having to scroll left right to read.

FrannyandZooey · 31/01/2009 09:38

oh and just a detail, but there's a problem with the search box - word search is obscured by the box itself

pavlovthecat · 31/01/2009 09:51

In a month - no-one will ever even remember that MN was any different.

There are bound to be teething problems - I cant imagine MN wont sort them out. So I am gonna sit back, be patient and just wait for it to be sorted. No more moaning from me about it. Well, today anyway
