A few notes on the new look and functions

There are still a few problems with using the various "Mumsnet Classic" options. However, for a lot of people matters are significantly improved if they press Refresh in their browse. If you're using Firefox, try pressing Shift+Refresh. At about 4:30am this morning after many hours of work, that made the classic option work well. Only a couple of minor layout issues remained.

Text is not meant to be squished, you're not supposed to have to scroll down through acres of whitespace. We'll definitely fix these issues.

I've no idea why people are finding text too tiny; the font size hasn't changed intentionally, so if it is tiny for you it's either a need to press refresh (to reload the style sheet, in tech speak) or a problem that will be fixed.

Threads I'm On and Threads I'm Watching should behave in the way they always did - they do for me. Let us know the specifics of problems you have with them and we'll address them.

We know about the problem of seeing "hide hide hide" across the top of the page. If you go in to customise (which my huge ENGLISH dictionary lists as being able to be spelled either customise OR customize) you can turn off showing of the Hide option which is a workaround for this problem. We'll fix it properly soon.

The ads have neither changed size nor increased in number.

Remember: Press REFRESH (and try SHIFT+REFRESH) a couple of times. It might help a lot.

For those having problems we do apologise and will sort it all as soon as we can. For those that hate it, perhaps you'll get used to it after a while and we'll improve the classic options (though I am using them now and they're working fine).

Oh and for the 2 of you that said thanks for all the hard work: thanks! It has taken over a dozen people a lot of hard work. We had to release it in a hurry and it's not perfect, but we'll get there.

Please give us back CLASSIC yetmoretech!!

mamaolivia · 30/01/2009 21:09

what happened to threads from the last 24 hours? miss it

nappyzonehasastroppytoddler · 30/01/2009 21:09

when i go into activ convos its little writing but tiny writing saying the section so eg potty trg in tiny nappies then ds wets his pants in big letters - its giving me eye strain

PinkFurryStripeyTiger · 30/01/2009 21:10

I quite like the new look, but I would prefer floating text as I like to re-size the browser especially when I have more than one app open at a time.

Othe than that, I like it!

nappyzonehasastroppytoddler · 30/01/2009 21:12

i think i just talked a load of shite - what i mean is that in the activ convos list the topic at the beginning of theline is tiny font and then the convo bigger - oh whatever its daft

DadOnAHotTinRoof · 30/01/2009 21:47

Grrrr - bloody filthy great margins, using up all my screen real estate! I've got a lovely big 22 inch monitor, but I can only use a strip in the middle!

Grrrrr.

Grrrrr.

TeenyTinyToria · 30/01/2009 22:01

Just seen your post, Justine, think I will stick around and wait for Classic to come back! Sorry to moan so much, but I love MN and don't want to leave because it gives me a headache.

whitenoise · 30/01/2009 22:06

On SN, all the text appears squished.

I have teh thread title then immediately under that i have add message etc and then immediately under that i have the blurb about MN not being experts.

A spacing issue? Or my browser?(firefox)

mumonthenet · 30/01/2009 22:10

i've popping back all day....and I think I like it even less than I did this morning.

Can't we have classic back tech...you could always tart it up a bit if you're bored with it? Please?

This new version is too much like all those other common or garden forums...fonts too small, layout messy, thread titles truncated.

Ooh, I've just thought of something I like - the shortcuts, but you could have added those to the old MN.

RustyBear · 30/01/2009 22:25

For those who are finding the text too small, try this -
If you have a mouse with a scroll wheel, try holding down ctrl as you scroll down - the text will increase in size. If not, use ctrl & =

And if you use Firefox 3, it will remember your chosen zoom when you come back to MN - even if you've closed it between visits, but it doesn't affect other sites.

You might need to go to the View & look at the Zoom menu - if you have a tick by Zoom Text Only, it may do strange things to your graphics if you zoom too far. If you zoom the whole page the graphics stay in proportion.

TheYearOfTheCat · 30/01/2009 22:46

Rusty, thanks so much. I was getting a headache with such small text.

10weeks · 30/01/2009 22:47

I'm with Rubberduck.

I quite like the layout, won't take long to get used to it but I've already given up with "watched threads" I can't tell which ones have been updated because it only shows the original thread.

Can we have it back so you could see how many people had posted since last looking and when we click are taken to where we stopped reading previously?

Vamanos · 30/01/2009 22:51

Ach come on everyone, it's really not all THAT different and difficult to navigate, is it??? Surely??????

My only complaint is that it looks TOO similar - DH can still glance over, see the blue and white horizontals, and know that my claims to be be 'working' or 'catching up with important correspondence' are entirely false.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 30/01/2009 22:54

oh thank goodness!!!! when I went to Mumsnet new this time round it was soooo much better. In classic on firefox the heading space was the same colour as the post space so it was all one giant whiteness with black writing. Mumsnet new is now differentiating the colours - blue for headers and white for posts.

much happier now.

onager · 30/01/2009 22:54

It seems to be different for everyone. Some saying nothing has changed and some like me saying it's a totally different website.

IE6 gives me tiny pale font on a blinding white background and won't zoom at all. I use zoom a lot on other sites.

I'm banking on them fixing it, but I can't use it like this really. I'm squinting here.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 30/01/2009 22:56

And its gigantically different on 'Active' with the classic setting it was again just a list of threads in black writing on a white back ground. New mumsnet has alternating blue and white background colours.
Phew!

RipVanTwinklemegan · 30/01/2009 22:56

Re the F5 thing. I'm reliably told that F5 will refresh the page but not the cache on your machine. So if the page is cached you need Shift-F5 (although I was told CTRL - F5) to refresh everything.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 30/01/2009 23:02

All that needs sorting from a personal point of view now is the large square of blue or white before the top of the thread when actually in the thread and the truncated thread titles.

Well done tech

RipVanTwinklemegan · 30/01/2009 23:03

I don't see a large square...

OhYouBadBadKitten · 30/01/2009 23:07

Am on firefox.... (and whispers very quietly, I have ads blocked ) (please don't ban me!) I think thats causing it cos in IE with ads theres no large square.

random · 30/01/2009 23:09

I have no large square ?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 30/01/2009 23:14

I've figured that its not wrapping properly, where in IE the thread text goes a little narrower to go down the side of the 'mumsnet latest', advert and the 'Active convo' boxes, instead the thread isn't starting til below them.

QS · 30/01/2009 23:28

IT is looking really good!

Thumbs up. Nice, clean, new and fresh.
Well done.

Only thing I miss is seeing the whole thread title.

gigglewitch · 30/01/2009 23:33

well, shock blinkin horror - I like it.
Congrats to all those involved in slogging developing it
