A few notes on the new look and functions

There are still a few problems with using the various "Mumsnet Classic" options. However, for a lot of people matters are significantly improved if they press Refresh in their browse. If you're using Firefox, try pressing Shift+Refresh. At about 4:30am this morning after many hours of work, that made the classic option work well. Only a couple of minor layout issues remained.

Text is not meant to be squished, you're not supposed to have to scroll down through acres of whitespace. We'll definitely fix these issues.

I've no idea why people are finding text too tiny; the font size hasn't changed intentionally, so if it is tiny for you it's either a need to press refresh (to reload the style sheet, in tech speak) or a problem that will be fixed.

Threads I'm On and Threads I'm Watching should behave in the way they always did - they do for me. Let us know the specifics of problems you have with them and we'll address them.

We know about the problem of seeing "hide hide hide" across the top of the page. If you go in to customise (which my huge ENGLISH dictionary lists as being able to be spelled either customise OR customize) you can turn off showing of the Hide option which is a workaround for this problem. We'll fix it properly soon.

The ads have neither changed size nor increased in number.

Remember: Press REFRESH (and try SHIFT+REFRESH) a couple of times. It might help a lot.

For those having problems we do apologise and will sort it all as soon as we can. For those that hate it, perhaps you'll get used to it after a while and we'll improve the classic options (though I am using them now and they're working fine).

Oh and for the 2 of you that said thanks for all the hard work: thanks! It has taken over a dozen people a lot of hard work. We had to release it in a hurry and it's not perfect, but we'll get there.

The font is way too pale - hurts my eyes.

differentID · 30/01/2009 19:02

OK. Tech, although I don't like the new look as yet, I can appreciate the hard work that has gone into it. Therefore, please accept this,
these and
finally this

pippibluestocking · 30/01/2009 19:02

I agree St. George - definitely a way of cutting back on MN - giving me a headache.

Katisha · 30/01/2009 19:05

But it's too WIDE - I can't see all the writing in a post without having to scroll sideways. Annoying. Like watching a widescreen film on an ordinary telly. Sort of.

Northernlurker · 30/01/2009 19:07

I don't like it at all.

It reminds me of ivillage

I hate ivillage

Harumph!

What I really want to know is how much my dh paid tech to ensure I was put off mumsnet?????

BabyBaby123 · 30/01/2009 19:08

i'm sorry, i'm sure you had your reasons but what were they? i just don't get this at all - it was fine the way it was. I'm really struggling with it tbh and it's giving me a headache. It looks like the Bounty site or something - are you going to start doing those horrible tickers and stuff too?

CountessDracula · 30/01/2009 19:09

too wide?
God mine is all squished up in the middle

FAQtothefuture · 30/01/2009 19:10

mine fits on the screen beuatifully.

I can scroll up and down threads and read 'em no problems.......

Watusi · 30/01/2009 19:11

Do you know what. I think it is too 'clean' in a peculiar kind of way.

It's like your favourite old seedy pub has suddenly been revamped and turned into a shiny new echoey cocktail bar where everyone can hear what you're saying.

Innit tho?

I do find the new look pretty, but I will never, ever stop missing the old one - and I felt less restricted in what I said there. It moved fasted than I could keep up with, it was hard to read in a good way. I knew who and where everyone was.

But I daresay I'll become accustomed to the new resonance. It's after all the best thing in its class (unless you count my favourite washing machine forum...)

Raise your glasses folk, in a fond farewell. 'Old Mumsnet - and those who have loved her'

Mummyfor3 · 30/01/2009 19:11

I like it.

Well done, Tech!

FAQtothefuture · 30/01/2009 19:14

Watusi - once everone figures out that it's not actually that much different to use than the old one you won't be able to keep up with things again.

Everyone is running rounding with their hands in the air panicking atm

TheYearOfTheCat · 30/01/2009 19:15

Did we ever get a bookmark function for really long threads?

Katisha · 30/01/2009 19:18

Def too wide. I can only read the threads properly if I take off the favourites bar on my desktop, which obviously I can do, but it's a slight nuisance.

RobertPattinsonComeToMomma · 30/01/2009 19:28

OMG, what have you done with my Mumsnet!

CuddlyKelpie · 30/01/2009 19:40

I quite like it - will take a little getting used to but well done for the swift swap.

I have a request....I wonder if possible could the titles to new messages under active etc be in bold? I find the pale blue a little hard to read. Maybe I should wear my glasses though.

thaliablogs · 30/01/2009 19:40

Please can we get rid of the horrid bullets on the thread pages? They aren't adding anything and just look messy. Let the threads start on the left hand side again.

McDreamy · 30/01/2009 19:41

Loving it - well done!

LuckySalem · 30/01/2009 19:41

I like it but can we have it back so that when you've read a message it turns purple? I can't remember which threads I've read.

RustyBear · 30/01/2009 19:41

OK, have now tried it on Classic:

Firefox 3.05; at first in Active convos the moon was on the left, with the ad underneath it, and the the thread titles under that. The threads themselves had that 'squashed' look people were talking about & visited threads were not purple. When I pressed f5, the threads unsquashed & the moon & ad moved back to right, but the visited thread titles still weren't purple. But Threads I'm on did have the 'summary' of all the posts since my last one.

IE 7.0.6001.1800; Same as for Firefox, but I only went on this after I'd pressed f5 in Firefox, so I don't know if it would have initially been wonky if I'd visited it first.

Google Chrome: (only version 1.0.154.46, because I've now updated to that one) As above, post f5. (Actually I think MN looks best on Chrome, it suits the new 'clean' look)

Safari on iPhone 3G: As above, but on the iPhone under Classic there are no white margins at all, whereas under New, there is a white margin only on the right. This is actually quite useful, as it allows you to flick down the screen without the danger of accidentally touching a link.
However, although Threads I'm on is fine under New on iPhone, the right hand side of the Active Convos frame (the 'By' column) overlaps the ad at the top and on the actual threads themselves, the links at the top (Add/Start/Watch/Flip/Hide/Refresh) stretch right across past the advert and across the top of the margin. Also the Report Post & Contact a poster are on top of the ad. This makes the actual text of the thread very small, though on the iPhone it's very easy to zoom in & out.

It seems to me that the thing people will miss most on New is the 'summary' of posts since your last one on Threads I'm on, which you do get on Classic - without it I think many people will ignore the New style.

hth

BitOfFun · 30/01/2009 19:42

I am weeping with frustration here - nothing I customise seems to let me read anything without scrolling side to side every single line...I am going to leave it a few hours and hope that ther is a message with clear instructions from MNHQ later which will give advice for all the browsers. There are too many different threads and different solutions which do or don't work for different people, and frankly, my head is exploding...and I love my mumsnet - please fix it!!

Zaftig · 30/01/2009 19:42

Err, why is mine all of a sudden reading with the last post first.

I've clicked on read like a book a million times and saved it but it keeps reverting back to the stupid upsidedown method.

Just started doing it.

BitOfFun · 30/01/2009 19:45

Me too- aaargh!!!

Zaftig · 30/01/2009 19:46

Hey Tech, you're meant to fix the bugs not mess with stuff that was working!!!

Lilyloo · 30/01/2009 19:51

Is there a problem with for sale boards i can't see any links to items ?

Watusi · 30/01/2009 19:55

TECH and everyone at MNtowers

I just want to say that I've switched to classic and it's wonderful - I didn't realise you could get the old format back, it's brilliant, thankyou so much.

Cross me off the list of moaners
I have found my old chair in the corner again.
