Can MN please do something about these posts late at night?

This is getting ridiculous now. Post after post from some weirdo on various threads. Can you PLEASE put some decent moderation in place at night?

Mumsnet is a 24 hour a day, multi million £ global business on the internet. If shit happens on the site MNHQ should be able to deal with it whenever it happens.

We've been targeted by trolls on successive nights now. MNHQ are very aware of this, but they've done nothing. They haven't even paid overrime for temporary overnight moderation. Instead they scold the posters who bring it up.

Edited

Agree totally and would add that not only does Mumsnet appear to be investing to put a halt to this but sidestepping communicating to users how and if they plan to deal with it.

If I were advising Mumsnet, I would be telling them this is a reputational risk and that they need to have paid moderators 24/7. I have always been impressed with how Mumsnet is managed but wouldn't be saying that now.

No Alan, I have never reported anything at night. Because mods are not working at night so no one reads the report at night.

So if you don't report, how do you know no action is taken ?

Can you see the logic issue here ?

Not really, no.

I don’t know what you’re saying. Who isn’t taking action?

You can report at night but nobody is there to see it

I’ve told him that but I’m getting lost with what he’s trying to say.

BIWI · 16/08/2026 18:49

You report (using the report button) something during the day. MNHQ mods deal with the report.

You report (using the report button) something during the night, there's no-one from MNHQ (i.e. being paid) to deal with the report.

You therefore have to find the appropriate link to post a report to The Night Watch. It would appear that many people have a) no idea that TNW exists and/or b) how they are supposed to contact them.

TNW are unpaid volunteers, and there's no obligation on their part to be around, so it depends entirely on who is online whether anyone reads your post. And as they don't have the same powers as MNHQ, there's a limit to how they can deal with 'troublemakers'.

So yes, sometimes during the night (UK hours/time), there may be no action.

I already know that.

I have told him that.

Hide / block poster would work surely?

Not really, no.

I don’t know what you’re saying. Who isn’t taking action?

How do you even know "Who isn’t taking action?" if you don't report to them to them to take action ?

How can they take action if nobody tells them they need to take action ? You might be the only person reading a thread at that moment.

Or do you think someone should read this post I am about to post, to check it before you see it ?

RedTagAlan · 16/08/2026 18:39

It's not actually a circular logic issue as you are trying to suggest.

MN have said there are no moderators at night. The moderators respond to reports sent using the report button.

There are volunteers (called Nightwatch) at night. During the threads following the issue with abuse images last year, they confirmed that they have no access to the reports sent using the report button. They only see comments made in the Nightwatch forum.

Hence, no action is taken on reports at night.

Yes, but whenever it’s suggested Mumsnet have lots and lots of reasons why it wouldn’t work.

Except, obviously, it would work.

bluegreygreen · 16/08/2026 18:59

Yes, there are many things that seem to work on other fora.

So you assume there is no point reporting during your night ?

I am getting your logic a bit here. But if you are not reporting, and there are no time stamped reports, how are "management" supposed to know how to allocate resources. Of course the troll posts are timestamped. But how are "management " to know if it needs resources now, or in the morning ?

Why not just report ?

Sort of. Where I am it's Monday.

NoCommentingFromNowOn · 16/08/2026 19:13

Is RedTagAlan taking the piss?

I’m sort of enjoying it, and sort of confused, and sort of wondering if I’ve had too much coffee today and sort of wondering why some people like popcorn and some don’t.

@RedTagAlan It’s really wonderful that it’s Monday for you. It is, however, irrelevant. Mumsnet is a UK site and the Mods keep UK hours (mostly, I know a mod was here earlier but that’s not regular).

For me it is Sunday evening. The world keeps turning.

I am not in the UK timezone, Simple as that, And I report spam whenever I see it. And it seems to go away.

I do not check to see what time it is in the UK before I hit the report button. I just hit it there and then. Then I move on.

You carry on reporting things you see that are Wrong, or Very Wrong.

I just hit report and move on. Sometimes the spam post I report is instantly gone, sometimes not. But if I do look back after an hour or whatever, it is gone.

Checking the clock, it is 6:26 AM in NZ Monday, 11: 26 am LA Sunday.

Should people only report office hours UK time ?

That is not what my friend Alan is saying. He has made no reference to joining in with many other people, and getting to the appropriate number where things get an automatic deletion.

To be honest, I don’t know what he’s saying. But I do know he didn’t say that.

@RedTagAlan I feel like we’re bonding. I always fancied visiting both New Zealand and/or LA.

That’s a very dangerous policy MN are utilising there and explains a lot.
