To think mumsnet should explain why Gaza threads keep getting deleted?

No explanation and nothings been said that was antisemetic or broke guidelines. I’d really like to know why whole discussions are being deleted on a globally important topic instead of individual posts being deleted. Some of us care deeply about this topic and would like to see it being discussed.

OP posts:
BeckyAMumsnet · 08/07/2025 13:00

We want to be absolutely clear that threads are not being removed simply because they touch on difficult or sensitive topics - and it’s not accurate to suggest that nothing antisemitic has been said.

We’ve allowed many discussions on this issue to remain where posters have managed to debate and share perspectives without resorting to generalisations, conspiracy theories, or dehumanising language. Many threads on MN show it’s perfectly possible to talk about these issues without crossing the line.
But when we do see posts – or repeated behaviour – that veers into antisemitic tropes or makes sweeping claims about entire groups of people based on race, religion or nationality, we step in. That may mean removing individual posts, or in some cases, whole threads if the overall direction breaches our guidelines or creates an environment that frankly we’re not willing to host on Mumsnet. There are sadly many places online where this kind of thing is left to stand and we don't wish to be among them.

We’d also gently remind posters that it’s not for individuals to decide what constitutes hate speech or breaches guidelines – that’s a judgement for the moderation team. And yes, context and posting history are often taken into account when we make those decisions.

We understand that this topic matters to many, and we’re not trying to shut down discussion - but there are lines - and we'll continue to moderate within our rules.

Because people keep posting misninformation. Plus, there is the CITME board if you want to talk about it.

ADpackage · 08/07/2025 12:38

I want to discuss them on AIBU. If they want to move them, then move them, but why delete whole threads when people are having an important discussion.

Why do you want to discuss them on AIBU? Don't you know how many bad faith posters and trolls it attracts?

PurpleChrayn · 08/07/2025 13:06

Maybe because a lot of people (me as a British Jew married to an Israeli, in particular) don't massively want to see your ill-informed bile on the main threads. The matter is disproportionately discussed compared to other conflicts that are taking place.

PurpleChrayn · 08/07/2025 13:07

Thank you @BeckyAMumsnet

myplace · 08/07/2025 13:09

I don’t engage with many posts on this subject as there is a tendency for them to be blindly one sided in one direction or another.

Your post, for example. What do the surveys of opinions in Gaza look like? It didn’t look great to me when they were cheering in the streets about the bloodied, raped bodies of young women. I don’t believe a lot of what I read. I know what I saw.

2 in the last 6 hours. Why not just delete the offending posts?

Please explain mumsnet we genuinely want to know why we are not allowed to discuss Gaza.

There are literally hundreds of threads on Israel and Gaza. If MN are trying to stop people talking about it they're not doing a very good job.

noblegiraffe · 08/07/2025 13:13

Probably the rape denial. That’s not particularly welcome on a female-dominated site.

Westfacing · 08/07/2025 13:14

Because you're not allowed to criticize Israel or its army as it's viewed, very unfairly, as anti-Semitism.

It's the same in all media.

I heard Nick Robinson on Radio 4 say that saying 'Death to the IDF' is the same as death to Jews, as Jews are conscripted into the army.

Jewish people are not conscripted into the army - Israeli citizens are conscripted into the Israeli army.

Jewish people in the UK are not conscripted into the IDF, although some do volunteer.

Really? So the thousands of posts on mumsnet criticising Israel and it's army are all just figments of my imagination?

Meanwhile, Ukraine is on its 27th thread. Why can’t we discuss this topic when everyone is being civil and exchanging views.

Difference is maybe that the Ukraine threads tend to have run sequentially over the last few years..

There's generally just one active Ukraine thread running at a time, people don't start up a brand new one every time a notable event/attack/atrocity takes place, the event(s) get discussed in the overall flow of the one currently active thread.

OTOH the CITME section is up at ?19 pages, and a new thread seems to get started everytime someone feels the need, which sometimes appears to be several times a day...I can maybe see why MNHQ engage in some housekeeping.

The IDF is almost 100% Jewish people. So yes, Jewish people are conscripted into that army.

freakyfriday23 · 08/07/2025 13:22

Your post OP says it all. YOU think there was nothing antsemetic but who are you to decide. It's often the case that people who decide that something wasn't jew hating make hurtful comments. Would you question whether or not something was racist if someone told you they were upset by something someone had said? No, you wouldn't. You'd respectfully comfort them, you wouldn't question it. The amount of vile pure jew hatred that often gets disguised whilst being protective of gaza is astounding and yes you can criticise israel without being a jew hater but jew haters use it as a way of being free and open to spout jew hatred. Jews and Israel are not the same thing unless you are a jew hater 😊

That’s not true. Have you been on the CITME board?

Hundreds of threads criticising Israel. Its’s the anti-Semitism that’s the problem.

And the rape denial.

It’s quite easy to criticise Israel without being anti-Semitic, despite so many people being seemingly utterly incapable of doing so.

Vivi0 · 08/07/2025 13:28

The amount of “why won’t Mumsnet allow us to be anti-Semitic” type posts over the past year has been astounding.

Many can’t even see or understand how what they are saying is anti-Semitic. I can only imagine the kinds of things that are said between them and other people who share their views.

Frightening.

YourTaupeSloth · 08/07/2025 13:30

Tiny update here. I’m the OP. My 12 year old mumsnet account was just deactivated - I posted ONE thread on Gaza this morning, and this one. Thanks mumsnet for answering my question. It’s because you’re pro-Israel and pro-g and pro ethnic cleansing.

You don’t want the evidence out in the open, just shunted away in a side discussion on SITME or whatever it’s called.

Silenced, cancelled. This is what I’m talking about it. While the Ukraine thread is on its 27th thread on chat, everyone’s up in arms if Gaza appears on AIBU. Says it all. Wait for this thread to get deleted as it outs mumsnet pro-Israel policy, 20 months into a genocide.

Notmycircusnotmyotter · 08/07/2025 13:31

Outlandish and provocative statements? Thousands of them already?

Don't talk daft. There's an entire board dedicated to it.
I read and commented on your thread. It's pretty obvious why it was deleted.

Mumsnet are pro-genocide?

FFS.

Twiglets1 · 08/07/2025 13:33

Thank you @BeckyAMumsnet

@Westfacing It's not true to claim that you're not allowed to criticise Israel or it's army. There are many threads doing just like that on the board called Conflict In The Middle East (CITME).

The war in Gaza gets debated very often on the CITME board. The vast majority of threads are allowed to remain, though individual posts get deleted if they break MN guidelines. I only saw one of the threads about it on AIBU that got deleted early this morning, but it was racist in my opinion. Even the title was inflammatory and designed to offend anyone who has a connection to the holocaust so I can totally understand why that one got deleted.

Mumsnet HQ need to be transparent over their moderation with detailed guidelines and right of Appeal and justifications publicly given.

Do they? It's a privately owned site, I assume that they can delete any thread they wish for any reason that they wish, or no reason at all. People don't have a right to post here.

freakyfriday23 · 08/07/2025 13:34

Op is being disingenuous. She knows exactly What she's doing. The way she talks, her wording is very easy to see through. I'm enjoying watching her play out 😄

SumUp · 08/07/2025 13:39

Some people have poor understanding of antisemitism, or are being wilfully antisemitic.
