AIBU to ask what on earth this ad is about? *Trigger Warning* Sinister Image

TheITCrowded · 30/11/2024 14:41

What even is this? This ad is regularly shown in my Mumsnet feed. It's previously had some very odd text on it too; I can't remember the exact wording (something like "How did you die?") but it seemed pretty sinister... Is anyone else seeing it? Any ideas?

@mnhq

Please can we have the frightening adverts removed? This happens from time to time on MN and makes it unreadable.

Letmegohome · 30/11/2024 15:59

@Hiddle1976 why repeat?

Letmegohome · 30/11/2024 16:01

There are far more detrimental adverts than an Etsy advert surely?

OooPourUsACupLove · 30/11/2024 16:03

I zoomed in on the Die poem (I think it's "how..." not "why...") - it's just a fairly cheesey live/laugh/love type poem about being of good character, with how you faced death being the hook. I guess the algo that generated that ad is looking for weird images that people click on to find out more.

(I also get something that looks like a wooden octopus with The Rock's head!)

not harelip.

The Rocktopus thing is really weird. The whole ad is weird, really. I was glad I finally worked out I could get rid of it. Took me long enough. Grin

Thanks, I'm just using terminology that was used when I was younger. I would definitely not want to offend anyone. I'm just upset that companies are using facial disfigurment as advertising.

Letmegohome · 30/11/2024 16:21

Has nobody heard the phrase "clickbait" clearly working in this case

Yes, it was common parlance in my day too, and like you I wouldn’t want to offend anyone.

I agree the commercial use of this person’s image is terrible.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 30/11/2024 16:25

It seems to be a popular tactic used by advertising at the moment to post images of products that make you go ‘wtf is that?’ I feel like it started with Wish adverts a few years ago (which were always something that looked oddly sexual) and I also see Temu do it sometimes. Presumably it’s to make you click to see what the product is and even though they know it’s not something most people will buy then their hope is that once you’re on the site they’ll be able to sell you more popular but less interesting products.

Obviously it's clickbait.

That's not the point of the thread.

Are you not aware that reputable sites have control over what ad images are shown in their advertising slots? They don't just allow a free for all on what is still their site. Hence it's worth flagging to MN if you think an ad is upsetting or otherwise problematic as if they agree they may want to block it.

Letmegohome · 30/11/2024 16:34

@OooPourUsACupLove people are offended by different things. The advert may not be you your taste. Doesn't make it universally offensive
Etsy are not alone in the "wtf was that" advert as stated up thread

PyreneanAubrie · 30/11/2024 16:43

I'm finding it disturbing. I've clicked at least 5 or 6 times to get rid of it and it still keeps coming back.

Intensiv14 · 30/11/2024 16:44

Approximately 2 days ago I was ads which show faces with injuries, bleeding cuts and scrapes. No idea what they’re advertising but some of them were celebs. Didn’t look closely as they were horrible and I assumed they were scams of some sort.

InSpainTheRain · 30/11/2024 16:46

I also had this and thought it was horrible. I blocked it and reported it.

PyreneanAubrie · 30/11/2024 17:00

Blocked again, reported again.

PersilPower · 30/11/2024 17:14

I’ve got this which I’m also finding a bit vomit inducing. Not meaning to minimise the horrible images for the OP but this looks vile!

Yes I understand that. I think you missed the point that something broadly (not universally, but broady) offensive or upsetting is damaging to MN so they may want to block it on their site altogether. Or they may not. Once they are aware of it they can decide.

i don't really mind the ad myself once I'd checked the How Will You Die text. But I would understand if MN felt it damaged their brand.

Hello @TheITCrowded we're moving this across to Site stuff now so it doesn't get lost. These ads are bypassing our filters (and the same across many websites, unfortunately). If possible could an MNer please on the App or desktop share the click-through URL as this helps us find and block? On the App you can hold with two fingers and copy ad details without actually opening the ad. On desktop, you can right-click and copy link address. (On mobile you have to click through and we'd imagine you don't want to!)

Thanks Becky, it's chasing me 😂 I did the right click for the link. Here you go... actually I'll dm you the link cause it's a million lines long 👀

@OooPourUsACupLove fair point, but the images change within the advert . I'm more offended by @PersilPower screenshot. We don't have to agree and mumsnet will do whatever they see fit .

(Honestly, that Etsy wool shop needs to change to main image to look less fleshy & hairy.)

It's just a vile ad. Do they honestly imagine it will encourage people to shop with them? The irony is that they sell some beautiful items.
