AIBU to ask what on earth this ad is about? *Trigger Warning* Sinister Image

What even is this? This ad is regularly shown in my Mumsnet feed. It's previously had some very odd text on it too; I can't remember the exact wording (something like "How did you die?") but it seemed pretty sinister... Is anyone else seeing it? Any ideas?

@Hiddle1976 that term is really quite offensive. Just saying as assume you didn't know .

Allthehorsesintheworld · 30/11/2024 15:24

Just seen the “ furry thing” is wool fibre, often called roving, used for needle and wet felting. It’s an awful photograph, I wouldn’t buy based on that.

The Etsy product has no links to the man's face
https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/570894400/wonderland-art-yarn-18-laughing-and

MN ads have a tendency to do weird things at the moment.

The adware thing seems to have eased off a bit but it's v annoying

An image of a man on Google ads with a facial disfigurment probably over 100 years ago is given people nightmares. I'm utterly bewildered.

When I first started seeing it it was the book or card with "Why did you die" on one side, then the hair/wool thing on the other... i thought it was maybe a dead animal or something. The face thing is new.

Apologies for offending you. What term should I use so I can tell myself when I look in the mirror.

Don't assume anything would be my advice.

Forrressstloverr · 30/11/2024 15:33

i’ve seen it, it’s hideous. The stuff nightmares are made of.

WhatsitWiggle · 30/11/2024 15:35

I've been getting that loads too. I've clicked on the Google ad to say stop showing this to me.

I realised afterwards that it was probably some poor soul who'd suffered an accident or war wound. I initially mistook it for someone wearing prosthetic make-up, I'm afraid.

EmeraldRoulette · 30/11/2024 15:37

Etsy want to advertise their site this way?!

Hiddle1976 · 30/11/2024 15:40

@AllHisCaterpillarFriends I should have said Cleft. Back in my day it was always referred as the cleft palette inside my mouth, my lip was described as a hair lip.

WearyAuldWumman · 30/11/2024 15:41

Hiddle1976 · 30/11/2024 15:12

Get a grip ffs

Oh dear. I'd assumed that flippancy might be understood but - of course - I keep forgetting that tone isn't always conveyed by the written word.

I will say, however, that once I was able to get a clearer look at the image my reaction is pity for whoever that person is. They clearly suffered a catastrophic injury and I'm struggling to understand why it's on what seems to be an Etsy advert.

Top tip; didn't know you could do that! I'm generally scared to interact with ads in any way. Thanks!

Unfortunately, that looks like much more than an untreated cleft palette.

Allthehorsesintheworld · 30/11/2024 15:15

Yes it’s weird stuff sold on Etsy.
The face is a man affected by Leprosy. Very distasteful to sell stuff like this imo. Looks Victorian and they were very into so called “freak shows”
No idea what furry thing is.

Edited

Thank you. That makes much more sense. That poor soul.

Letmegohome · 30/11/2024 15:45

Some ppl collect owl figurines some ppl collect reborn dolls each to their own.
Etsy used to be the home of "one of items" and hand made things now it's not its full of drop shipping.
Etsy gets mentioned on mumsnet for unique gifts ( fingerprint cuff links and other such guff)
So that's why you're seeing it, they have probably chosen "unusual" images so you click on them to satisfy your inner "wtf is that?"

I thought that too. Years ago I used to work for a guy who made prosthetic shields for kids affected with cleft lip and palette. It can be pretty serious. Just a weird combo for the ad I guess. I can't imagine it's getting them much valued business.

And to add it wasn't really the face that started me off on this. It was the weird "Why did I die" and the dead animal thing.

It's hard to read the room on the Internet. Clearly people in Internet advertising are shit too.

BeckyAMumsnet · 30/11/2024 15:56

Hello @TheITCrowded we're moving this across to Site stuff now so it doesn't get lost. These ads are bypassing our filters (and the same across many websites, unfortunately). If possible could an MNer please on the App or desktop share the click-through URL as this helps us find and block? On the App you can hold with two fingers and copy ad details without actually opening the ad. On desktop, you can right-click and copy link address. (On mobile you have to click through and we'd imagine you don't want to!)

@TheITCrowded oh I know. These Google ads are awful I've blocked most of them.
