We’re excited to introduce a new feature that makes browsing trending content on mobile devices easier.

Now, when you're reading a thread, simply swipe left to move directly to the next trending discussion. If you’re enjoying discovering new threads, keep swiping, and you’ll continue to see the latest trending topics effortlessly.

When you visit a thread for the first time, you will see a message on the right hand side explaining how to use the new feature. If you select ‘Got it’, you will not see it again. If you choose to ignore it, you will see it 3 times before it disappears.

This feature is designed to help you explore popular conversations more easily while keeping the experience smooth and seamless.

We will be staggering the release of this, so some of you may not have access to the feature today, but if you don’t, don’t worry you will very soon!

We’d love to hear your feedback or answer any questions—feel free to share them below!

@VimesandhisCardboardBoots thank you - we are working on a fix for this and will update you ASAP.

We are also looking into the issue that some of you have reported on Android -where you click 'back' after swiping and it doesn't take you to the thread you were previously on.

We'll be back soon when we have further info. Thanks for your patience.

It happens on iPhone as well. I’m using safari and my scrolling keeps taking me to the next thread as well and when I go back it takes me back to active not the thread I’ve just swiped from.

Oreyt · 18/11/2024 07:05

Can you put the edit function on the app??

Seeline · 18/11/2024 08:59

The easiest way to fix it would be to remove it!
Has anyone asked for this feature?
Doesn't seem like anyone here wants it!

NoWordForFluffy · 18/11/2024 09:02

I think it's been more sensitive recently. It's even swiping when I'm on the left of the screen and, like a PP, it takes me back to active, not the thread I was on, when I reverse the swipe. Irritating as hell.

Well , it doesn't even show up for me.

Where is it supposed to happen??

Agapornis · 21/11/2024 07:59

Seems to be worse again after a few days with fewer issues. Possibly because I'm MN'ing in bed and scrolling up at a diagonal.
Please turn off this feature/bug.

NoWordForFluffy · 03/12/2024 22:48

It's appalling right now. Don't even have to try to swipe for it to go to the next thread, just move your fingers slightly and, bingo, next thread! Please turn it off!

Chemenger · 04/12/2024 09:22

I would also like this “feature” turned off or at least to have the option to disable it. I want to choose which threads to read, not just scroll through loads of stuff I’m not interested in, or be seemingly randomly shunted off a thread I am reading.

TheSilkWorm · 04/12/2024 09:30

Have you asked users if they like the feature? Could you add a poll somewhere? If the majority like it we will shut up but I'm only seeing people saying they hate it.

MurdoMunro · 04/12/2024 09:45

The social media companies love this don’t they, they know better what we want to look at, keep making it harder for us to choose for ourselves. They tell us these features are to make our experience here better. Same on Facebook, Insta, Twatter. They’re all at it.

LondonSpaPool · 04/12/2024 10:00

Oh FGS just take this ridiculous option off! It’s clearly unanimously disliked. Has anyone said anything positive about it? Even if it worked, there’s no point. Who wants a “send me to next random thread” feature?
At the very least, prioritise the option to turn it off rather than tweaking it so we can all get back to a usable site.

Breathmiller · 14/12/2024 10:26

Another voice to add to the ranks. I absolutely hate this "feature". I find it frustrating as it happens almost any time I am scrolling with my left hand.(which as I'm in bed with flu is a lot the last few days) it is so sensitive. I actually spent ages trying to figure out if it was in my phone settings so I could switch it off.

When I go back (by either swiping or the back button) it takes me back 2 pages. It also mucks up my "watching" threads because if it accidently takes me to a thread that is on my watch list it mucks up my place in that thread

If there is anyone who likes this feature (and is there?) then fair game to them but please please give us the option to turn it off.

NoWordForFluffy · 14/12/2024 10:32

I agree, @Breathmiller. It swipes even from the far left of the screen, not just from the right. It drives me mad.

Youvebeenframed · 14/12/2024 10:38

This feature drives me mad 🤯 didn’t want it, don’t need it, get rid of it.

… using browser on IOS

BlackOrangeFrog · 14/12/2024 21:28

Still doesn't even appear for me, hurrah

Agapornis · 19/12/2024 09:52

@BeckyAMumsnet it's been over a month since your last update, any news? It's so annoying and user unfriendly. PLEASE add an option to turn it off.

GinLimeandLemonade · 19/12/2024 22:52

I hate this update. Did anyone actually ask/want it? Makes it such a pain to navigate, and means I accidentally open threads I definitely don't want to 😒

Brefugee · 19/12/2024 22:55

HebeMumsnet · 23/10/2024 10:09

Morning, everyone. We're really keen to improve this for you all.

If you're having these issues with the 'swipe' could you tell us what device and browser you are using. And if you are able to, a screen recording of what's happening would be extremely helpful. If you don't want to post that here you can email it to contactus@mumsnet.com and just pop a post up here to nudge us to look out for it. Thank you! Flowers

I don't want this. I have stopped using the BBC site because of it.

@BeckyAMumsnet Generally: how do you decide what "features" to add? (I liked the "thanks" but now won't use it because it's more complicated)

GinLimeandLemonade · 22/12/2024 20:32

@Rainpigeon
@Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice
@Isitfridayyetsophie
@kitteninabasket
@LemonySippet

And anyone else who's accidentally swiping, could we ask you to let us know which device you're using (the specific model please) and which browser? Thank you.

I'm on Android, Samsung Galaxy, using Chrome.

I've noticed when I click to go back it goes to the page before the one that I've accidentally swiped from.
So if I was on the first page of a thread, that I'd clicked into from active, and then I accidentally swiped, then it'd take me back to active rather than the thread I was on.

It's very irritating, regardless of where I end up 😂

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 22/12/2024 21:57

I tried to surf MN the other night during a bout of middle-of-the-night insomnia and it was just impossible because of this feature, if I'm not holding my phone perfectly upright it's acting like every touch of the screen is a swipe. Awful, I gave up.

This is when it gets me most too. The lying down browsing is impossible.

ShamblesRock · 24/12/2024 12:05

It also chucks you off when you try to 'bookmark' which ironically you need to do frequently to stand a chance of knowing where you were in the thread after being chucked off.

Yep this happens to me too. And when I'm reading a thread I've got in the habit of bookmarking every 4 posts or so in case I get chucked away from the thread through this pointless feature. It's really annoying.

kitteninabasket · 27/12/2024 17:42

Any update on this @HebeMumsnet @JoMumsnet @LilyMumsnet @MNHQ @BeckyAMumsnet

ShamblesRock · 30/12/2024 18:26

I think the update is "it is here to stay" and tough that you / no-one likes it.
