Swipe for the next trending thread - mobile update from MNHQ

We’re excited to introduce a new feature that makes browsing trending content on mobile devices easier.

Now, when you're reading a thread, simply swipe left to move directly to the next trending discussion. If you’re enjoying discovering new threads, keep swiping, and you’ll continue to see the latest trending topics effortlessly.

When you visit a thread for the first time, you will see a message on the right hand side explaining how to use the new feature. If you select ‘Got it’, you will not see it again. If you choose to ignore it, you will see it 3 times before it disappears.

This feature is designed to help you explore popular conversations more easily while keeping the experience smooth and seamless.

We will be staggering the release of this, so some of you may not have access to the feature today, but if you don’t, don’t worry you will very soon!

We’d love to hear your feedback or answer any questions—feel free to share them below!

I don't like this feature on any website, it makes them pretty much unusable for me as I end up on a different page when just scrolling.

Sorry, as with other sites, it is a total turn off for me.

Agreed. I've not got this yet but hopefully it comes with a toggle to turn it off, because on other sites with it my fat fingers end up swiping to different articles when I don't mean to.

Rainpigeon · 15/10/2024 03:29

I am hating this feature, so many times this evening k have been 'ejected' from the page I am reading and when I back page it puts me two pages back instead of where I left off. I am fed up of this feature and want to turn it off all ready. I have given up on several threads I was enjoying already because of it.it means o can only only scroll with my right hand because using my left switches it to the next page. It is driving me mental! Please introduce a wee ay to switch this off! Thankyou.

Rainpigeon · 15/10/2024 03:30

I even just got kicked off this thread for trying to scroll withy left hand. Hate the new feature!

ShamblesRock · 15/10/2024 07:56

I get kicked off when trying to scroll with my right hand,

It is making it pretty unusable really.

Bestyearever2024 · 15/10/2024 07:57

I just want access to private messages on the android app

UnalliterativeGeorge · 17/10/2024 14:20

It's a pain in the arse. Can we turn it off? I'm fed up of half reading something and then it thinks I've swiped left, puts me on some random thread I don't want to read and then it won't go back to what I was on when I go back!
If I wanted to read the next trending then I'd choose to myself!

Can we just ask how you're trying to go back to the previous thread? Are you using the back button in your browser?

ShamblesRock · 17/10/2024 16:00

I'm having to use the back button on my phone (I don't have the option to go back in my browser.) though sometimes I can get it to swipe right but it always seems to go back to the page before the one I was on.

I've taken to bookmarking every couple of posts to stand a chance of getting back to where I was.

UnalliterativeGeorge · 17/10/2024 17:10

I'm using the back button on my phone too as I don't have one in Google Chrome on my phone

LilyMumsnet · 18/10/2024 14:37

Thanks so much for the extra details. We're discussing this now and will post shortly.

Yep. I'm constantly accidentally swiping. It's shit and I don't like it!

DrinkReprehensibly · 19/10/2024 23:03

I don't have this feature yet but it's one of the most complained about features on the BBC news app on the store reviews. I hate swipe to change thread/article for the same reason others have said. It's usually way too sensitive and just takes you away from what you want to read!

NoWordForFluffy · 21/10/2024 14:17

Christ on a bike this is driving me mad. You don't even have to swipe, just get a bit close to the right and try to scroll down! 😩

GiantHornets · 21/10/2024 18:36

I hate it. I don’t want some algorithm to decide what I want to read.
The thread keeps changing and it’s hard to get back to where I was. I am having to bookmark very often to be in with a chance of finding my place

GaspingGekko · 22/10/2024 09:27

Please can we have a way to disable this feature. It makes websites virtually unusable on my phone. Halfway through reading a thread and I accidentally activate it and go onto some random thread I'm not interested in.
If I wait for it to fully load the new thread I can then (usually) use the back button to return to the previous thread, but have to relocate where I was, and honestly it just ruins the experience of killing a few minutes on mumsnet.

This could actually be the thing that ends my AIBU addiction.

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 22/10/2024 17:48

Hate this! Really hate it! Like others I'm finding my phone is misreading a scroll as a swipe and won't take me back to where I was.

Pleeeeeeease let us turn it off.

HebeMumsnet · 23/10/2024 10:09

Morning, everyone. We're really keen to improve this for you all.

If you're having these issues with the 'swipe' could you tell us what device and browser you are using. And if you are able to, a screen recording of what's happening would be extremely helpful. If you don't want to post that here you can email it to contactus@mumsnet.com and just pop a post up here to nudge us to look out for it. Thank you! Flowers

This has been driving me mad all night. I use an iPad (rotated) to read Mumsnet and every time I try to enlarge the screen I get a 'Something went wrong' message that I can't remove. I think I had seven at one stage last night! Maybe it's just me being stupid, but its very annoying!

ShamblesRock · 23/10/2024 10:40

A screen recording may be pushing my skills to the limit 🤣but I have an android Moto using Chrome.

Seeline · 23/10/2024 11:03

I hate this too - couldn't work out was happening at first, but this makes sense now!
It happens on my phone when I enlarge a picture that's been posted. I try and move around the picture to find an important detail and my screen immediately switches to a thread I have no interest in at all. And then I can't find my place in the thread I was on.

How do I turn it off please?

Android phone, mobile site on Chrome.

User100000000000 · 23/10/2024 12:35

Please tell me this isn't coming to the app 🙏

Hello

Thanks for uploading those.

We haven't yet found a cause for this, but the error should only appear for a few seconds at a time. It can be closed by clicking the close button.

If you continue to have these issues, please could you let us know?

I agree. I choose which trending thread to read, I don't want to be shown the next one on a list.
There are a lot of trending threads I never open based on the thread title - I actively skip them - so I don't want them put in front of me. As everyone else is saying, I just want to go back to where I was.

I'm on Android mobile, using chrome. Not sure I can manage a screen recording because it happens so randomly, but it tends to happen two different ways:

It happens when using my left thumb to scroll and I scroll or tap the screen near the side.
It happens when scrolling in the middle of the screen but not up and down straight enough. There's obviously enough slant on my scroll to suggest that I have swiped.

Honestly, every website I use with this function leaves me in despair. It's so frustrating. The only way to improve it for me would be to make it an option.
