Clickbaity horrible advert (TW: domestic violence)

justasoul · 02/09/2024 08:39

I just had this absolutely vile looking advert appear in the middle of a thread. It shows a photo of Sara Cox with a bruised face (fake as I have reverse searched the image) and has a red box below saying “now we know that the rumors are true.” (spellings like that). I have screenshot but not sure whether to
post it. It was 08.21 and I’m on Safari on an iPhone 13. Not sure what it linked to as when I came back from screenshotting it the advert had changed.

ETA: it was on the ground rice post, if it makes any difference.

You probably need to report your own thread so @mnhq pick it up

TheCrenchinglyMcQuaffenBrothers · 02/09/2024 08:49

Just came to say the same.
in the Holiday Cancelled thread on Holiday section.
Also have screenshot but won’t post unless required

justasoul · 02/09/2024 08:50

Just had the same again on this thread, but with Georgia Toffolo instead Confused

I have reported this thread, and had a third helping on the report page, this time with Sara Cox again but the headline was “is it the end of her career?”, again it disappeared before I could click on it - not that I think that clicking on it is a good idea anyway.

Same on the turbulent flight thread. Vile

SeashellCandle · 02/09/2024 09:21

All the adverts you see are based on your own browsing history. So deleting the thread doesn't get rid of it because it'll just pop up in another thread. Assuming MN uses Google Ads like almost all companies, they're simply renting the "advertising space" and Google will play out ads based on the browser cookies of each individual user. Some ads are shown to everyone as part of a campaign but most ads are related to your browser activity. Obviously, it doesn't imply you were looking at DV content but it sounds more like a gossip website so it could be possible you visited a similar site or was profiled as someone who might like that genre. The only way to truly get rid of the ad is to report it through Google.

For MNHQ - If it helps, it takes you to

https://buziness-nooz-pulse.com/banking?utm_content=gCK_riEzSuyYcxPGVoRj&adset_name={{adset.name}}

Which is a spoofed BBC news page advertising a trading platform.

justasoul · 02/09/2024 09:36

@SeashellCandle as it happens, mumsnet is the most gossipy place I frequent Grin
Safari (allegedly) prevents tracking, so I am guessing it's random. If the next one lasts long enough on screen, I will report to google, thanks Smile

Your ads are tailored to you not to mumsnet if that makes sense? I don't like how the ads are in the middle of the page though. It sounds like you have a click bait style ad attached to you, I keep seeing similar content on Facebook and I wonder how I've managed to attract this content!

justasoul · 02/09/2024 09:49

I have reported to Google. According them, I am getting the adverts because of my age. I don't think Google replies to reports but if I get any updates I will share. Many thanks for the comments.

I'm seeing this too. It's a horrible advert.

Norugratsatall · 02/09/2024 09:51

Yes me too, it's awful!

I was just about to start this very thread. Thank you.

Sort it out please Mumsnet.

AgileGreenSeal · 02/09/2024 10:05

I’ve just seen it too.
I’ve emailed [email protected]

HebeMumsnet · 02/09/2024 10:45

Morning, everyone. Thanks for flagging this. We're on it right now.

Moltenpink · 02/09/2024 10:48

I’ve seen one this morning with Martin Lewis.

Sexyshrek · 02/09/2024 10:51

Yes I saw this too and thought wtf? I've never googled Sarah Cox or had any interest in ai investing so not sure it's tailored to me specifically. It's just a horrible scam with a clickbait title.

HebeMumsnet · 02/09/2024 10:52

Thanks @Moltenpink . If anyone sees one of these again, could you please send us the url of the ad itself when you click through to it. Or, as a second best option, a screenshot and a link to the thread where you saw it? Thank you.

I wouldn't recommend clicking on the ad. Someone on another thread mentioned it taking them to a fake version of the BBC site, so there's probably some kind of scam involved.

Right clicking on it and "Copy link Address" will let you get the URL without actually visiting the site.

titchy · 02/09/2024 11:09

Ironically I've got it in this thread!

I've got the same ad. The person in it varies. I've had Sara Cox, Jeremy Clarkson and someone else this morning. It's awful.

HouseFullOfChaos · 02/09/2024 11:33

There is one saying "this was not supposed to be public" with Victoria from the dalas cowboys netflix show looking bruised too. I think it's victoria, it could be another celeb who I don't know.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 02/09/2024 11:54

I've just started getting this on every thread

longdistanceclaraclara · 02/09/2024 11:57
