Clickbaity horrible advert (TW: domestic violence)

I just had this absolutely vile looking advert appear in the middle of a thread. It shows a photo of Sara Cox with a bruised face (fake as I have reverse searched the image) and has a red box below saying “now we know that the rumors are true.” (spellings like that). I have screenshot but not sure whether to
post it. It was 08.21 and I’m on Safari on an iPhone 13. Not sure what it linked to as when I came back from screenshotting it the advert had changed.

ETA: it was on the ground rice post, if it makes any difference.

Do these only appear on Mumsnet?

Showing images of bloody, violently battered women to a website of women seems like targeted hate* to me.

Imagine this happened with a website for any other protected characteristic. It would make the news.

The image even appeared on the page where I was making the report! Really shook me up how horrible it is. And it means I'm mostly going to avoid MN today until I've heard back from hq.

*Of course, it's not actually a hate crime because good old cosy traditional misogyny is simply the air we all breathe.

I’ve only had men in my ads (Jeremy Clarkson and Chris Tarrant)

surely Chris Tarrant isn’t even news at the moment? He’s not on tv is he?

rainfallpurevividcat · 15/10/2024 10:46

I haven't had any of these.

LinesAndLinesAndLinesAndLines · 15/10/2024 10:49

I've also had the Rachel Reeves one this morning.

BanksysSprayCan · 15/10/2024 10:51

They are back - had the Sara Cox one again and another woman who I didn’t recognise.

ellebelli · 15/10/2024 10:59

I've had the rachel reeves one whilst reading the thread about sara(young child killed by father)

ItsTheGAGGGGGGGGG · 15/10/2024 11:03

I’m another who’s seen quite a few recently. Pretty fucked up

WingsofRain · 15/10/2024 12:53

I’ve seen at least half a dozen of these this morning, all different women, none of whom I recognise.
I have Safari set not to track and I don’t accept cookies on any website.

Since I don’t have a clue who these people are I think that debunks the idea that this is due to some sort of personal interest in gossip - in fact I hate that sort of stuff. I don’t see this type of unpleasant ad anywhere but on Mumsnet.

When you add in the constant resetting to the top of threads randomly it’s making the site very unpleasant to use.

Hi everyone, thanks for bearing with us while we deal with this awful ad. To help us track it down, can we ask desktop users to right-click (or on Macs, hold down control, then click) where you should see some options - choose 'copy link address' and then please paste it here.

This won't click on the ad but will allow us to track it down and block it faster.

Apologies again for any distress caused.

BeckyAMumsnet · 16/10/2024 14:27

Hi everyone - this ad should be blocked now but do let us know if you see it or anything similar again.

Thanks, all.
