Why aren’t you banning the far-right agitators?

Deleting their posts but allowing them to keep inciting racial hatred under the same accounts is making the site unusable. Why should we keep reporting them if you’re not going to do anything meaningful about it?

I am really concerned about the many MNers who are not white British reading the hate speech that's been posted over the last few days. It's their site too.

Yes. Horrendous posts.

Yes. Horrendous posts.

And are allowed to stand. Why?

To those thinking of leaving Mumsnet, I have to say the racism on this site has dismayed me for some time. I've taken issue with it many times in the past and the pushback has been intense and immediate. Most of the time it's a festering undertone, the sort of thing PoC have to deal with on a pretty-much daily basis.

The noise of this latest onslaught is much more overt. But IMO this is an ignorant, misinformed, vigilante-style backlash which capitalizes on three things: recent news events, the hot weather which often accompanies rioting, and the instaling of a new Labour government.

These types always crawl out of the woodwork when Labour are in power. It's a recognisable pattern. It's just that on this occasion they were particularly quick off the draw: it's only taken them what? Four weeks?

This too shall pass: as for the covert racism unfortunately we as a society seem as far from stamping this out as we ever were. The same is true of a recent resurgence of misogynistic sentiment toward women. This site reeks of that, too.

The agitators, women-haters and racists must not be left in ownership of this site: were that to happen a vital resource - particularly for abused women - will be gone.

Thank you. This gives me pause for thought. You're right that we shouldn't let them take the site over. But I need to find a better way of managing my own responses because it is having a really negative impact on me at the moment.

Very well said. If I, as a white woman, feel so defeated and ready to leave, how must those members who are not white feel right now?

Yes. I'm sure that most are sadly used to dealing with racism but the level of bile recently has been out of control. It must be incredibly alienating.

My young adult dd is mixed race. Obviously she isn't on MN but I know that she has felt increasingly alienated by what she sees on the news and what she sees on social media.

I can't even begin to imagine how it must feel for young people from Muslim backgrounds to see so much hate directed towards them.

I feel so angry on behalf of all of our children and young people. What sort of society will they be inheriting?

I might be wrong! Just a hunch as they have gone quiet. Maybe they are busy on other threads, though.

I really hope the law is tightened up to the extent that sites like this, and Facebook and Twitter/X of course are sanctioned with criminal proceedings for allowing hate speech to stand.

Agree. It must be awful just trying to go about your life in this toxic environment.
I usually smile and say hello to everyone anyway but I’m really making sure I do atm.

Apolloneuro · 02/08/2024 13:07

I remember once, on the Nicola Bulley threads, someone posted a photo of a boat building place, I think, near the river. The name was clearly evident. They then proceeded to pass on some spurious claim that someone dodgy worked there…had it been searched etc.

I screen shot it and messaged MN that if it wasn’t removed I would email it to the company, giving them the evidence to take legal action with.

Yep. Or might have name changed.

To be fair, I post under multiple names on here as I don't like to put too much personal information under the same name, so can't really criticise!!

Uricon2 · 02/08/2024 13:10

I was thinking back to the foundation of the Anti Nazi League and the fact Brian Clough, Sir Henry Cooper and Jackie Charlton helped to found it (including financial aid)

All from working class backgrounds and renowned and respected in their sporting fields back then, not politicians but ready to stand up and be counted. I really feel that their contribution and support, the fact they spoke out, made a difference and it would now if people of a similar stature these days did the same, a clear unequivocal line in the sand against hate.

ErrolTheDragon · 02/08/2024 13:13

@VerySadCase - sometimes I have a spell when I just don't read threads if I can tell by their title that I don't have the energy for them. I know that at any time there will be lots of other posters who can. Sometimes I read and report rather than investing time and emotional energy posting.
I'm able to engage at the moment - we don't all have to all the time.

Thank you. Good advice.

Sometimes I find it difficult to walk away because the shit that people are posting so obviously needs to be challenged. Leaving it almost feels complicit.. the virtual equivalent of a shoulder shrug. It feels so wrong. But you're right, others will be there to challenge. And self preservation is also important.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 02/08/2024 15:04

I'm noticing now that BBC headlines showing that the riots and the preceding social media comments are being organised by EDL.

VerySadCase · 02/08/2024 15:13

There needs to be much more control over social media. Why are the likes of Tommy Robinson allowed to even have accounts on Twitter? We all know what he stands for so why does he still have a platform? Surely if there is even a hint of people stirring up trouble, they just need to be barred for life.

There need to be whopping great fines on social media platforms where there is evidence of people having used them to incite riots.

Totally agree but Twitter has gone to shit since that idiot Musk took over.

Oh, and the EDL has been disbanded is another one.

I’m tempted to ask if that is the case why were the Southport rioters shouting out EDL?
