Why aren’t you banning the far-right agitators?

GoldMedallist · 29/07/2024 22:03

Deleting their posts but allowing them to keep inciting racial hatred under the same accounts is making the site unusable. Why should we keep reporting them if you’re not going to do anything meaningful about it?

I read some really horrible stuff here yesterday. Just racism. It's really concerning. I think a lot of it sounds like it's fueled by Trump shit from American websites.

BustingBaoBun · 02/08/2024 09:21

I agree. We in the UK always pick up the leftovers of the worst of american politics.
On one of the nasty threads, the OP said more or less people don't know what they're talking about... and that the EDL was disbanded years ago. And it's just the general public fed up. Hahaha yeah right. Course EDL was disbanded! It's been replaced with Patriotic Idiots and other groups. What umbrella these numbskulls riot under is pretty irrelevant. They are being enabled.

That Times article is depressing.

PandoraSox · 02/08/2024 09:33

That Times article explains a lot. So many new posters popping up. Also I noticed quite a few of the racist posters seem to have resurrected user names they last used years ago. So some of them have been here all the time, waiting for their chance.

I am so glad MNHQ brought back advanced search. It is very illuminating.

At risk of sounding like a conspiracy theorists, I do wonder if some are bad actors who have been here gaining trust for years. Like sleeper agents.

MN has been shown to be politically influential in the past so could attract it.

PandoraSox · 02/08/2024 10:00

I think you could be right Cassie.

PandoraSox · 02/08/2024 10:08

Still waiting for MNHQ to delete this filth and hopefully ban the poster I hope. New poster. I think a textbook example of the Times article.

Eta: it is very upsetting

The times articles are good background. I'd wondered about the repeated use of the phrase 'two tier policing' cropping up - that's a clear tell.

GoldMedallist · 02/08/2024 10:20

There are other tells, such as the desire to exploit class anxiety. Obviously the obsession with Islam. Use of terms such as native or indigenous population. It just seeps out of them.

Yes, it is one of the key phrases. Also "honest conversation about immigration".

VerySadCase · 02/08/2024 10:31

The Times article is very good but quite chilling.

It's very telling that those who are actively stirring up these riots often don't turn up in person.

CassieMaddox · 02/08/2024 10:32

"Two tier policing" is doing my head in. People are stupid if they think there is only one way that disorder should be policed.

Fuck yes, how many times does that one get trotted out.

I'm actually more than happy to have conversations about immigration, just not with a bunch of racists that are using "concerns about immigration" to legitimise their hatred.

That poster is a fantasist

DuncinToffee · 02/08/2024 10:47

'uncontrolled immigration' is another dog whistle phrase

PandoraSox · 02/08/2024 10:50

Oh, and the EDL has been disbanded is another one.

CassieMaddox · 02/08/2024 10:52

"Multiculturalism has failed"
Anything about integration at all
This is cathartic to know other people see it too

DontBiteTheCat · 02/08/2024 10:56

PandoraSox · 02/08/2024 10:50

Oh, and the EDL has been disbanded is another one.

This is the one that makes me laugh the most, someone said it to me in RL this week.

Yeah ok, because all of their supporters went away quietly or suddenly became tolerant because the EDL “doesn’t exist anymore”.

PandoraSox · 02/08/2024 11:39

That revolting post I reported is still there. Maybe all the mods are in a meeting or something?

SerafinasGoose · 02/08/2024 11:49

To those thinking of leaving Mumsnet, I have to say the racism on this site has dismayed me for some time. I've taken issue with it many times in the past and the pushback has been intense and immediate. Most of the time it's a festering undertone, the sort of thing PoC have to deal with on a pretty-much daily basis.

The noise of this latest onslaught is much more overt. But IMO this is an ignorant, misinformed, vigilante-style backlash which capitalizes on three things: recent news events, the hot weather which often accompanies rioting, and the instaling of a new Labour government.

These types always crawl out of the woodwork when Labour are in power. It's a recognisable pattern. It's just that on this occasion they were particularly quick off the draw: it's only taken them what? Four weeks?

This too shall pass: as for the covert racism unfortunately we as a society seem as far from stamping this out as we ever were. The same is true of a recent resurgence of misogynistic sentiment toward women. This site reeks of that, too.

The agitators, women-haters and racists must not be left in ownership of this site: were that to happen a vital resource - particularly for abused women - will be gone.

CassieMaddox · 02/08/2024 11:55

If it is, that's down to the nasty posters and the tolerance of, not the women worn out by posting/reading on here.

I'm not sure what the answer is. For me, the cost of posting here is starting to outweigh the benefit. I'm not sure it's worth the impact on mental health and happiness to carry on fighting to counter those people.

ErrolTheDragon · 02/08/2024 11:56

Absolutely.
We need to stay to report, and to challenge. The racists whine about 'echo chambers' - that's because despite their efforts they're a toxic minority.

BustingBaoBun · 02/08/2024 12:00

Great post @SerafinasGoose Agree with all you say

Now must get back to watching a police dog pull down a thick rioter's shorts... on repeat Grin

PandoraSox · 02/08/2024 12:00

If the site is to be saved from the bigots and agitators MNHQ needs to step up.

There is a poster who is so clearly a bad faith actor who I and I suspect other have reported, yet is still there posting bile. Another poster who is rather threatening, also no response from MNHQ (eta: they have just deleted that one!)

Uricon2 · 02/08/2024 12:09

I am really concerned about the many MNers who are not white British reading the hate speech that's been posted over the last few days. It's their site too.
