To those thinking of leaving Mumsnet, I have to say the racism on this site has dismayed me for some time. I've taken issue with it many times in the past and the pushback has been intense and immediate. Most of the time it's a festering undertone, the sort of thing PoC have to deal with on a pretty-much daily basis.
The noise of this latest onslaught is much more overt. But IMO this is an ignorant, misinformed, vigilante-style backlash which capitalizes on three things: recent news events, the hot weather which often accompanies rioting, and the instaling of a new Labour government.
These types always crawl out of the woodwork when Labour are in power. It's a recognisable pattern. It's just that on this occasion they were particularly quick off the draw: it's only taken them what? Four weeks?
This too shall pass: as for the covert racism unfortunately we as a society seem as far from stamping this out as we ever were. The same is true of a recent resurgence of misogynistic sentiment toward women. This site reeks of that, too.
The agitators, women-haters and racists must not be left in ownership of this site: were that to happen a vital resource - particularly for abused women - will be gone.
