Why aren’t you banning the far-right agitators?

GoldMedallist · 29/07/2024 22:03

Deleting their posts but allowing them to keep inciting racial hatred under the same accounts is making the site unusable. Why should we keep reporting them if you’re not going to do anything meaningful about it?

Nah. Some of us are just calling out racism when we see it. Some of my best friends are Conservatives. (True, actually)

What about sexism against men? Men seem the most loathed group on here.

DontBiteTheCat · 31/07/2024 20:38

Piggywaspushed · 31/07/2024 19:28

Just so posters know, there is now pretty good evidence that the guy arrested with the knife was an EDL thug. It has confused the patriots because he is 'half cast' [sic]. And now they can't blame him and they are even more bewildered.

Edited

Please can you link me to this evidence? It would actually make my day after seeing so much fake bullshit all over my SM today.

People genuinely think the EDL twats just happened to be knocking about with pure intentions until this “Muslim with a knife” incident.

Piggywaspushed · 31/07/2024 20:50

It's on Twitter, linking to a well known EDL type woman's account.

I'll see if I can find it again.

So start your own thread about that, then.

Seriously, the whataboutery here is astounding.

Might be a bit of a fight though. Is it worth it for an online forum?

That's what I'm wondering. I've been on these boards for years but I've never known it as bad as this. I feel like we should stay and fight but I'm just not sure if I have the energy for it. I'm so incredibly depressed by it all.

cakeorwine · 31/07/2024 22:01

MN certainly seems to have attracted a certain kind of poster recently.

Not what Justine thought would happen when she started a parenting forum

GoldMedallist · 31/07/2024 22:09

There have been several site invasions from various groups over the years, sometimes they were entertaining. These ‘patriot alternative’ ones will hopefully stick around and, what’s the word? Assimilate? Integrate? Respect the culture here. Learn the language. Make friends even.

No, I wouldn't have thought so. It's a shame because it was such a fantastic space when I first joined somewhere between 15 to 20 years ago. It was such a joy to be part of a predominantly female forum and I really loved the wit and honesty and intelligence on here.

It has changed so much in recent times and I really don't know if I feel at home any more. There are still some fantastic posters on here, but there used to be so any threads that made me laugh, threads that make me think etc. Now I tend to see more that make me sigh or send my blood pressure sky high. So many dog whistle posts and so much thinly veiled racism (if they bother trying to veil it at all, that is.) And even when MNHQ is on it with the moderation, you just get threads with a load of deletions that render them virtually incomprehensible.

There is no new kind of poster.

What’s happening is years of not feeling heard when people who had genuine worries spoke out,

There has been a lot in the past few years to deal with as as per the government hasn’t dealt with it properly. - especially with the Palestine Marches - that unsettled people. Multiculturalism isn’t working in some areas and if you’re honest you can admit that and look to help make it work better. There is no point in pretending that people ( mostly men) from countries that have had terrible wars ( most which the U.K. had a hand in) and completely different cultural ways of life can just slot in to U.K. life.

So people are becoming tribal and ‘picking sides’ - unfortunately there is extremists on both sides ready to scoop those looking for support and community.

The riots that I have seen tonight have scared me. The riots that I seen last year between the Hindus & Muslims over a cricket game in were the same. Mosques and temples set on fire. Fireworks were fired at police vans during the marches and Jewish people chased, Yet there wasn’t thread up on thread about it because it’s not ok to point out that yet again multiculturalism isn’t working. Even between non British people,

I do feel ‘far right’ is over used but in my heart I’m worried because I do feel a real far right government is on the horizon because no one will admit that things are getting a bit fucked up and people that have always sat in the middle want change. We do not want a ‘real far right’ government. And let me be clear - the Tories were not far right.

If we have a real far right government - not the idiots out on the street ( kids and morons) women are going to get really punished. The real far right are already getting places on the government in Europe and it will follow here.

Keir needs to make some big changes and statements here. Acknowledging the U.K. people feel scared and working to make things better for ALL people rather than focusing on surface level shite

There is.

How long have you been on MN?

I have been on MN for 9 or 10 years. Yes you get the odd racist poster and there was loads of misinformation posted around the time the covid vaccines began.

However, the outright racism and deliberate lies that have been posted since Monday is on a level I have not seen on MN before. Is it a co-incidence? No.

Since 2013

So you must recognise that what has been happening on MN since Monday is unusual?

Dancingmonkeyfeet · 01/08/2024 08:29

And if you’ll be honest quite a bit has happened since then to make people feel worried. We are not in the same place we were 10 ago and there is no point pretending that it’s all ‘the far rights’ fault.

This is cause and reaction and pathetic governments

PandoraSox · 01/08/2024 08:28

Were you around for the Madaline Mcann threads? Those were pretty wild and had to be monitored heavily. My point with these threads is that people can get very hostile and ‘pick sides’

Manchester arena bombing - the threads were very similar. Many people sitting in the middle but wanting change and a few outliers going far - which were deleted.

We are watching a pan boil over and the is no point pretending it’s the pans fault if we don’t turn the gas off.

DuncinToffee · 01/08/2024 08:36

You must have noticed threads where a poster basically spams with lots of posts and then disappears.

That has been happening for a good while but gets ramped up with events, like the electiion and now the Southport tragedy

Probably a combination of agitators targetting sites and posters feeling emboldened.

This thread is about far right activity on MN.

As I said, the activity on MN since Monday is very unusual for the site. It is not a co-incidence. The far right have hijacked this tragedy for their own ends. By far right I mean the likes of Yaxley-Lennon and Farage and their followers and the myriad of smaller far right groups.

Do you know what?
I'm getting a bit fucking sick of this. The country has been held hostage to this bollocks for the last almost ten years. We got a hard brexit. We have Nigel Farage in parliament. How much more "heard" do the far right need to be?

As someone who believes in tolerance, inclusively and working together for the good of humanity, I feel extremely unheard at the moment. I want my country back. The UK of the 2012 Olympics, that's tolerant and welcoming and vibrant. The difference is I am not out there rioting like a toddler to get my way.

"Not listened to" my arse.

A euphemism for what?

Yes. It's the fault of the people who voted for Brexit, voted in the last populist cabinet, voted for Farage and go round wanging on about "stop the boats" and "protect the children". That's the cause, not the effect.

Those people are not going to be happy with anything other than zero immigration and anyone they deem as "non British" out. In fact though they still won't be happy as there will be no food in the supermarkets, broken hospitals, no carers for granny etc etc.

It is nonsense.

BeckyAMumsnet · 01/08/2024 09:30

We're just catching up with the comments here - please bear with us as there's a lot going on at the moment and we're up against it a bit.

We have noticed a small increase in new users posting inflammatory content, and we're banning those we believe are not participating in good faith. This isn't uncommon when significant or controversial news events occur and we're sorry if you've seen posts that have upset you. As media reports have highlighted, and as you're likely aware, there's a lot of misinformation on social media surrounding recent events, which has undoubtedly contributed to wider unrest. We will remove any posts reported to us that we believe promote such agendas and are designed to be inflammatory. We also acknowledge that amid so much misinformation, MNers will want to discuss what has been reported elsewhere and perhaps seek clarity.

Our guidelines allow for the expression of diverse opinions, even on contentious subjects, provided they do not include hate speech, direct threats, or incitement to violence. We of course acknowledge that our moderation isn't perfect and we're sure you have many examples of this (on a site as large as Mumsnet, we may miss some things), but our intention is always to remove any form of hate speech.

With over 30,000 posts per day, we rely on reports from Mumsnet users to help us manage content, for which we are hugely appreciative. If you believe we've made the wrong call on any post, we're always open to a discussion.

You can find out more information from our Talk guidelines.
