Why do you allow people to attack and ridicule Christianity?

Time and time again I see people taking the absolute piss out of Christianity. Calling people delusional and saying it's made up bullshit etc. why do you allow this? I don't see this about any other religion.

It goes far beyond atheism and you claim to be against hate speech.

@poshsnobtwit I just read that thread and I just don't see what you see. Lots of scriptural guidance. Some people concerned about the impact Christian sexual morality had and has on society. And a couple of juvenile bum jokes. I honestly couldn't see anything shocking.

There is value in poetry, literature . Not everything has to be “verifiable “ in a scientific way.
Many religious people do not take the Bible literally ( the earth was made in 7 days etc) but think the Bible is a poetic expression that conveys a different kind of truth.

But isn’t that wrong? From the perspective of the Christians who (think that) the bible is the inerrant word of god isn’t even saying that its just poetry, or metaphor, the kind of insult and mockery that the OP dislikes and feels should be banned?

Possibly- but I wouldn’t say directly to that person “I I think you’re delusional “ and I wouldn’t choose to have a discussion about this with them.

I’m the same way I wouldn’t do this with religious books from other faiths,

Maybe it moved on since I last looked but the initial posts I felt were disrespectful. Even a pp saying "does Jesus mind if I have bum sex is funny" is mocking the OP's question. On the same board someone asks for Jewish opinion on something, the first post is "well I'm a heathen and I think...". It's the same for Muslim posts too. So on reflection religion in general is mocked on here, if the questions were in chat/AIBU I feel it would be a bit more free for all, but on the the religion board people deliberately being obtuse and flippant is disrespectful IMO. If religion isn't for you, fair enough, but don't then feel compelled to respond to threads that want genuine responses.

I think something that is missing here, perhaps because the OP is imagining that her Christianity is the median one, the normal one, is that modern Christianity comes in many flavors. Some of them are quite politicized and “in your face” not to mention in your schools and in your bed.

This is not just an Anerican phenomenon. Evangelical Christianity is a fast growing, world wide, phenomenon that rapidly converts people (even within Christianities) and often attempts to make illegal actions or relationships that are disfavored by their biblical lights.

Anti LGBTQ christianity is on the move in the US and in Africa where the death sentence for homosexuals has been suggested and attempted to be put into law.
In the IS it is evangelical christianity that has ended abortion rights and destroyed women’s healthcare. They are also coming for divorce.

I am not interested in insulting anyone’s faith. But I see no reason to give up sarcasm, comedy, or criticism when confronting an active foe of modernity, liberalism, snd feminism.

The pp’s complaining that their lovely peaceful relationship with god is misunderstood or needs protecting from Ricky Gervais or whoever makes fun of them are simply engaging in special pleading. Its basically “no true Scotsman” when they are asked to defend politicized christian social repression. Or in mn parlance “not my nigel.”

Well I wouldn’t walk up to a church lady and make fun of her to her face. But I see no reason not to make fun of various Christian representatives for their arrogance and contempt for my rights in the name of Jesus.

Again and again we see on this thread that some christians see any form of questioning, especially logical and/or honest questioning as some sort of attack on them.

Once again the irony is not lost on me. 😄 What I see is that some folk object when other folks find them objectionable.

You'll need to explain what irony you think you see.

You are reading more into this than you should. My interpretation of this is that it is aimed at everyone - atheists and believers alike, and not just in relation to religion.

You don't get to tell others how to interpret a random quote. 🤣🤣

A plea for civility on facebook in the form of an anodyne bit of computer art? How refreshing! I will definitely rethink my attitude.

There is no point expecting civility from trolls …
But I’m very sure most civilised people would agree with this sentiment .

pikkumyy77 · 22/07/2024 22:34

Who is a troll?

People who don't agree with you aren't automatically 'trolls'. 🤣
