Why do you allow people to attack and ridicule Christianity?

Singersong · 18/07/2024 06:45

Time and time again I see people taking the absolute piss out of Christianity. Calling people delusional and saying it's made up bullshit etc. why do you allow this? I don't see this about any other religion.

It goes far beyond atheism and you claim to be against hate speech.

I think the way different religions are ridiculed on MN is subtly different. Christians are more likely to be laughed at for having. "Imaginary sky friends" whereas Jews and Muslims will be ridiculed more for cultural practices. The lack of tolerance and understanding for religion on MN is quite breathtaking at times. I meet people in RL who have a lack of understanding, but not the lack of tolerance. Maybe the people I associate with in RL are more open minded and kinder than some MNetters.

I sometimes quite enjoy some of the rude comments as it shows posters up as the unpleasant people they really are.

Questioning a belief system isn't intolerance.
The main person 'showing themselves up' on this thread is actually a christian.
Next.

Well said @LynetteScavo

Treating someone in an inferior way simply because they follow judaism would be anti-semitic. The same applies to islam.

And other religions @Werweisswohin

Why? Being able to laugh at ourselves is a huge part of British culture! It's not intolerant to include religion in that, not including it is verging on anti-British!

As long as we don't attempt to stop people practising their choice of religion/belief system, or treat them in an inferior way (eg don't employ them due to their religion), then any form of questioning is fine - many people do find religion ridiculous and it's perfectly ok to express that.

Did you miss the part where I was replying specifically to a post about judaism or are you trying to start an argument when there isn't one?

RampantIvy · 21/07/2024 08:15

Laughing at a religion and its practices is fine - remember Dave Allen?

Criticising or questioning a religion's practices is also fine - circumcision, FGM, misogyny.

Ridiculing someone for having a faith by telling them they are delusional isn't.

The first two are impersonal, the third is personal.

LynetteScavo · 21/07/2024 08:19

@BarHumbugs - Iaughing at yourself and your own beliefs is very different to ridiculing someone else's.

How about if you genuinely feel it is actually delusional to think a god figure is real and can speak to you though? To believe so strongly in something just because a few men happened to write a book a long time ago? To think you know your god is the god and to base important life decisions on that instead of logic?

Only if that person can't laugh at themself and their beliefs. Religion should not have special status, it should be open to ridicule. If religion is too fragile to withstand a bit of ridicule that is not my problem.

It's fine to think it. We all think things that are probably best left unsaid. I still maintain that telling someone they are delusional is rude.

Rebusa · 21/07/2024 08:46

Yeah I always wonder what the end game is with people like that @RampantIvy which is why I back off from super hostile atheists “bros” intent on arguing with me.

My faith brings me so much peace, happiness and hope. It helps me to make wise decisions and be more gentle to others than I think I would be otherwise.

Even if they believe it’s “delusional” what benefit is it to anyone for them to say that to me ? Just because you can say something it doesn’t mean you should!

I know someone who thinks thy look 21 and they’re 43. She seems to be happy about it. I completely disagree she does look 21 but her beliefs not doing me any harm 😂

I don't go about randomly telling people they're delusional, that would be ridiculous and pointless, but if it comes up in conversation I'm as entitled to a view as the next person. 😬

I'm much more at peace and happy living without any man made belief system. I'm honest with myself. I solve problems or learn how to live with them, depending on the individual issue(s). I don't have to worship any being or be saved from sin because I also believe sin is a man made concept that none of us need saving from.

Escaping from religion has brought me a new sense of life and freedom - looking back I see how I was preyed on when vulnerable, and if me speaking out stops that happening to any more vulnerable people then that's only a good thing.

No, questioning isn't rude. Mocking is.
I have had quite a few civilised discussions with Jehovah's Witnesses where I have asked a lot of questions. No mocking happened and we agreed to disagree.

I wouldn't do that. Are you always this blunt? Do you tell overweight people they are fat, or not very tall people they are short?

Why can't you just say you don't share their beliefs instead of telling them they are delusional?

I'm honest.
If someone asks my view I assume they actually want my view. Don't you?

RampantIvy · 21/07/2024 10:07

@Werweisswohin I wouldn't be as blunt as you. I would just say that I don't share their views. Maybe that is why I don't get "rampant Christians" proselytizing because a polite but assertive answer always seems to send them on their way.

I think telling someone they are delusional is rude. Many people who "say it just how it is" are just downright rude. We will have to agree to disagree on this.

That's the second time you've resorted to swearing when you don't agree with someone!
(MN deleted the first outburst).
You being speechless does not make @BansheesOfEdSheeran an idiot.

Edited

It was Banshees of EdSheeran who called someone an idiot but that has now been deleted by MN.
Im not sure why swearing bothers you so much when you’re an advocate of free speech. But you’re right- it’s no more conducive to civilised discussion than mockery is .
