Why do you allow people to attack and ridicule Christianity?

Singersong · 18/07/2024 06:45

Time and time again I see people taking the absolute piss out of Christianity. Calling people delusional and saying it's made up bullshit etc. why do you allow this? I don't see this about any other religion.

It goes far beyond atheism and you claim to be against hate speech.

@Thegreatestoftheseislove
@Werweisswohin and @CurlewKate Thank you for your suggestions. I did say in my post that I am not calling for one. I don't feel the need. If I did I would have already "

Does that mean you actually don't want a safe space to discuss matters of Christian faith without any debate-you just want to be able to control what people say on the main board? Because that's exactly how it looks.

This is a Christian country. But yes, all other major religions are discussed and celebrated in schools. Well at least, they are around here. A lot of time was spend on Diwali/Eid.

How is it you think that they shouldn't do a nativity play but I assume you have no problem with them celebrating Christmas. Knowledge is power. As children we are taught the religion of this country so that as adults we have the knowledge to decide whether or not to follow that faith.

Don’t think we have a state religion… all religions are fairy tails for grown ups. Do you feel better @Singersong that I think you’re all the same level of mad/sad/pathetic?

The UN definition of hate speech
Hate speech is “discriminatory”(biased, bigoted or intolerant) or “pejorative” (prejudiced, contemptuous or demeaning) of an individual or group.

CurlewKate · 21/07/2024 17:37

@Singersong has anyone said there shouldn't be nativity plays?

CurlewKate · 21/07/2024 17:41

I personally tend not to use deluded/shy fairy type language. But I can certainly see why people do. And I am definitely not prepared to go along with people's beliefs. I did the "some people believe" with my children.

Expressing an opinion isn't in itself discrimation.

The UN definition of hate speech
To provide a unified framework for the United Nations to address the issue globally, the UN Strategy and Plan of Action on Hate Speech defines hate speech as…any kind of communication in speech, writing or behaviour, that attacks or uses pejorative or discriminatory language with reference to a person or a group on the basis of who they are, in other words, based on their religion, ethnicity, nationality, race, colour, descent, gender or other identity factor.….
Hate speech is “discriminatory”(biased, bigoted or intolerant) or “pejorative” (prejudiced, contemptuous or demeaning) of an individual or group.

I notice that you have left out the part written after that "However, to date there is no universal definition of hate speech under international human rights law. The concept is still under discussion, especially in relation to freedom of opinion and expression, non-discrimination and equality."
And this bit "It’s important to note that hate speech can only be directed at individuals or groups of individuals. It does not include communication about States and their offices, symbols or public officials, nor about religious leaders or tenets of faith."

And? It doesn’t change the meaning of the words quoted imo

I was replying to someone else who wrote “. Do you feel better that I think you’re all the same level of mad/sad/pathetic?”
I think that is “pejorative language to an individual or group” ( ie “hate speech”)

I wouldn't use those exact words however I do question why (some)
people are so ready to buy into myths and stories and religious belief systems.

CurlewKate · 21/07/2024 18:14

Is "I think you are deluded" hate speech?

Is "I think you are deluded" hate speech?

I can only answer for myself, but for me it's not, just a statement of fact.
Remove the 'I think' though, as people often do, and while not hate speech it does become offensive imo.

alldayeveryday247 · 21/07/2024 19:16

@bryceQ

You're entitled to think that, I did a degree and masters in history and it's still my opinion that something so pivotal to who we are as a nation is something to have respect for.

Slavery is pivotal to our history in the UK but hopefully you're happy to condemn slavery rather than show respect for it? Fingers crossed.

You are entitled to voice your point of view. I must admit I do not follow your logic, but there you are. Weird that you would think that my sharing my thoughts 'controls' anything - it is utterly bizarre. Weird that would you think I would want some sort of 'safe' space? It's not an idea I've expressed.

pikkumyy77 · 21/07/2024 19:46

Isn’t this whole thread about wanting to make the whole world as safe for christians as it is presumed to be for those lucky jews, muslims, and hindus whose wives are never attacked for their clothing, whose holy books are never torn up or defiled, whose identity as british citizens is never questioned?

Not sure how else to explain it - those aren't complicated words.
Never mind.

If you're a Christian and believe in the Bible like myself, then you know it's to be expected.

What's to 'be expected'?
People questioning why so much faith is put in a man made book and why your god is so much more real than all the other gods?

Ok, you're not willing. That's fine. I will reply within my understanding of what I think you may be saying/asking...

If "OP" means opening poster, then, no, I am not. It sounds a bit paranoid of you to ask as I'm pretty sure you can't post under different names within the same thread - but you'd have to ask Mumsnet to confirm.

"Not every comment relates directly to you" - again sounds as if that's leaning towards a paranoid ideation. Unless you can point out where exactly you think I've said this?
