iPad safari- MN not clickable

122 replies

EmeraldRoulette · 11/07/2024 10:16

Hi @MNHQ

I don’t know if it’s my iPad but the last couple of days, MN just freezes on this. It comes up but then I can’t click on anything.

everything else is fine on the iPad. Wonder if anyone else is having this. Using the website not the app.

thank you

Still just as bad here too. Try it every day or two and can't get much past entering the site into active convs and scrolling down a bit then it just hangs again so pretty much unusable.

RockaLock · 27/07/2024 20:10

I've been having this problem on the iOS app for a while as well. Only on my iPad, though, I've not noticed it on my iPhone.

Like PPs have said, every so often nothing happens when you click on the screen. I think I can still scroll, but clicking to change threads or topics or whatever just stops working.

It's usually resolved by closing the app and reopening it (until the next time...) but it is very annoying.

Hi again, everyone. Thanks for all the info sent in so far. It looks like there may be more than one issue at play here, so it's all really helpful. Just to confirm, this is what we would like everyone to try first:
Tell us your device and browser info here
Try clearing your cache & cookies
Try changing your thread settings to view 25 posts per page
Confirm that you are not using an ad blocker
If possible send in a screen recording? This really helps.

We've been looking at the info some of you have sent in. We're missing a few bits for each of the following people (apologies if we've missed this somewhere but if you have time to have a look that will really help us get to the bottom of this). This is a bit of a long one - sorry!

@NoWordForFluffy
Thanks for the screen recording! Can you double check you don't have an ad blocker on as the ads don't seem to be loading from the recording you've sent us. Could you also try changing your thread settings to 25 and try clearing your cache and cookies?

@HerbertVonDoodlebug
Could you change thread settings to 25 per page and try clearing cache & cookies

@JustBeKinder
Could you tell us what browser you are using?

@KatherineSiena
Could you tell us which device you are using?

@ShikShakShok
Could you let us know which browser you are in?

@SoupDragon
Could you change your thread settings to 25 per page and see if that helps. Also, it looks like you're using an ad blocker, which will be causing at least part of the issue here, we're afraid.

@WeAllHaveWings
Do you have an ad blocker on? Could you also change your thread settings to 25 per page and try clearing cache and cookies?

@WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout
Could you tell us whaat device and browser you are using?

@Pigeonqueen
Could you tell us what broweser you are in and also try clearing your cache and cookies?

@AGodawfulsmallaffair
What browser are you using on iPad please?

@isthewashingdryyet
Could you tell us what device and browser you are using please?

@Tworedgeraniums
Could you try clearing your cache and changing thread settings to 25?

@AShortName
Could you try clearing cache and cookies and also try changing your thread settings to 25 per page?

@RockaLock
What version of the app are you on? You may need to download the latest version.

Thanks, everyone!

browser I m using is Edge, it only happens on my phone if I use my laptop it’s not an issue

JustBeKinder · 29/07/2024 13:31

Also it’s the Mumsnet daily that is delivered by email

RockaLock · 29/07/2024 14:14

Hi @HebeMumsnet , I've just checked and I'm on the latest version of the iPad app.

Interestingly, it says the last update was about a month ago - which probably lines up with the sort of time this started happening...

WeAllHaveWings · 29/07/2024 14:21

I completely removed ad blocker a couple of weeks ago
Now changed from 50 to 25
Cleared cache and cookies

Not completely hanging, but slow and glitchy swiping up and and down. Slow moving pages on threads.

Big white spaces where ads should be while they take ages to load, and when you are in a thread with huge moving ads every 5-6 posts it makes the whole thing in safari has just become very unpleasant/unusable.

EmeraldRoulette · 29/07/2024 14:59

@HebeMumsnet hi, thank you for replying

I already tried your suggestion, made no difference so not inclined to try again, it’s a pain to keep doing that

just have to use MN a lot less as it only works on my phone

I've given up trying to access MN via Safari. (On my Macbook)

I've switched to Chrome instead which, although I don't really like, allows me to access threads on MN without them freezing. The thanks and bookmarking also work on Chrome.

KatherineSiena · 29/07/2024 16:46

I’m using an ipad. I’m still finding the chrome browser is better than safari (which is virtually defunct) but even chrome is sticking occasionally.

However, I access perfectly fine via either browser on my iPhone

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 29/07/2024 21:07

I’ve closed all my tabs (annoying)
deleted my history (annoying)
on safari

it’s now much better
but I had to message my history and open tabs so I knew what I had

thank you

BIWI · 30/07/2024 08:15

I should also point out that it's only on Mumsnet, on Safari, that this happens.

Tworedgeraniums · 30/07/2024 22:18

I cleared my cache and reduced posts to 25. Seems to be faster but does still have shorter go slow moments. On the whole I’d say it’s better.

I had an issue with the app loading off the website off its own accord and then not being able to get back to safari so I deleted the app.

ProfessorPeppy · 31/07/2024 07:23

I've also given up accessing MN on Safari, it just hangs. iPhone 12 mini @mnhq

The app doesn't have a 'thanks' button, which is rubbish.

goldsequin · 31/07/2024 07:51

I’m able to use it on safari on iPad, but it’s very slow to load pages and bookmarks still aren’t working - a few weeks after it first started I’m still being taken to a random place multiple posts above my bookmarked post which is wasting time too once the page finally loads.

It’s only mumsnet I’m having an issue with.

I have mine set to show the full thread on one page and I’ve had it like this for years with no issues so I don’t really want to go back to having to click to another page constantly.

Hello! If you're tagged, it's because we're missing some information. We do need to ask whether you have tried clearing your cache and changing posts per page to 25, and if not, please can you do this?

We understand that clearing your cache is frustrating - but it helps us investigate the issue and for some, cache and posts per page seem to ease some of the issues. So it's a big help when establishing a pattern.

Please do give it a go and let us know how you get on. We'll use the information to try and replicate the issues you're facing (which gets us closer to a resolution).

ShikShakShok · 01/08/2024 23:02

Sorry for the slow response. To answer your questions:

Using iPhone 15, safari on iOS 17.5.1

I have cleared cache, cookies and history.

It is set to 25 posts per page.

Not using an ad blocker.

Not sure what a screen recording will do. It’ll just show a blank screen or a thread that’s frozen.

Things have very slightly improved in that I can now read half a thread before it freezes. I couldn’t even do that before. But still works fine on private mode.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 02/08/2024 16:33

It’s starting to jam on the private site now.

KatherineSiena · 02/08/2024 17:26

I have cleared cache, cookies and history on my iPad which I routinely do. My settings are set to 25 posts per page already.

I am still using chrome as safari is still pretty unusable. Chrome is better but still with occasional page freezing.

Just to reiterate this is only happening on my iPad not on my iPhone.

Sorry for being so slow. I will get onto trying these. Nervous about totally clearing the cache (have deleted lots) but don't want to lose all my tabs - I've got a research project going on. It's only mn that struggles with loading though. It's not any other website

Tworedgeraniums · 05/08/2024 08:46

Ground to a halt this morning. Rebooted my iPad and its speeded up again. Not going to delete the cache/cookies or whatever it’s called unless it starts to hang again.

just prior to this it got slower and slower. For me the banner ad at the top doesn’t appear and neither does the advertisement under the trending box. It makes me feel as if it’s waiting for them to appear before loading the posts. (I do get a few posts on the screen but scrolling is halted and there’s a white part where posts should be.

is there an order of loading

ie
title of thread and three posts
trending box
top banner ad/advertisement under trending box

BIWI · 05/08/2024 10:57

I'm not going to clear my cache, and I'm not going to restrict the threads to 25 posts, I'm afraid to say. Why should I?! All the other sites I use on Safari work perfectly well. It's just Mumsnet that has all the issues. So I've 'defected' to Chrome, which works.

This has been my thought until I thought I’d try to give it a try to see if it flushes things out. I don’t want to lose everything I have though.

A while back something changed and I was limited to 25 posts a page and MN was just unusable. Having to wait to load a new page every 25 threads was silly and mean that it was impossible to skim/ search a thread.

NoWordForFluffy · 06/08/2024 08:34

I detest 25 posts per page. I used to have all posts on one page. Then it went shit, so I reluctantly went down to 100. I refuse to go lower. It's for MN to sort the functionality, IMO.

This is the only website I have issues with. I've used many forums (fora?!) over the years and none have behaved the way this one does. 🤷‍♀️
