My neighbour's optician's cousin works in IT and said it's uber simple to amend.

I think it is good to be able to quote the OP when you are responding to the OP, or else how does anyone know who you are responding to if the thread has got really long? and it isn't hurting anyone!

You write "OP," at the start of your post.
Problem solved @60andsomething !
No-one is claiming it's hurting anyone but on some devices it can be annoying to have screen after screen of the same text.

you say "problem solved" but to me, there isn't a problem

KomproMatilda · 09/06/2024 16:31

We are all here for fun

Well, we’re all here for conversation. And MN is known for conversation at a certain level of comprehension and engagement. If you can’t be bothered to read the full thread - or even just all the OP’s posts on it - your own post probably isn’t going to contribute anything valuable. And will probably just annoy other posters who do comply with the accepted etiquette of MN posting.

crenellations · 09/06/2024 16:31

60andsomething · 09/06/2024 16:27

Maybe. But maybe I just don't want to. We are all here for fun, not to get arduous reading HW imposed on us.

Ah, we've found the poster who posts "Cancel the cheque!" two weeks after the problem is solved, and 150 other people have also posted that.

It's lovely that you find that 'fun' but it's definitely more on the tedious side for the average person.

You said "how does anyone know who you're responding to" if you don't quote the OP?
That was the problem you presented. I gave you the answer.

I'm happy to rephrase it to "question answered" rather than "problem solved" if you'd prefer!

AutumnCrow · 09/06/2024 22:13

And no, not everyone is here for 'fun'. There are many boards where women post some of the most poignant and painful problems I've ever seen, about bereavement, domestic violence, mental illness, special needs, forms of prejudice, poverty, and misogyny.

The resulting conversations on threads can be helpful, challenging, insightful and life-changing; but their primary purpose is certainly not 'fun' - and that's true of lots of posts and threads on general boards like 'Chat' and 'Site Stuff'.

Morning, everyone. Thanks for your thoughts on this topic. Just a note to say that we are reading and will discuss this in the office.

Thanks. It's particularly irritating when the OP is a multi-paragraph monster.

KomproMatilda · 10/06/2024 09:01

It’s even more annoying when the OP is five thousand words with no paragraphs. Grin

And then some renegade reproduces it in full … Angry

SoupDragon · 10/06/2024 09:11

What would be a better solution is if a quoted OP remains "collapsed" in the same way quotes of quotes do.

Then everyone is happy.

Your neighbour's optician's cousin Confused

😂 also "uber" simple. Annoyance of quoting the OP has nothing on the use of the word uber

This is a brilliant idea - @HebeMumsnet please make sure this gets noticed!

whatsappdoc · 10/06/2024 13:28

I agree with the collapsed quote for the opening post! Brilliant idea and everyone is happy.

I don't get notifications.

But if i was the OP of a post I'd be checking it regularly anyway.

There will be a red dot on your account if you've been mentioned, as you have by me in this thread. You don't need to be the OP.

MasterBeth · 10/06/2024 15:29

KomproMatilda · 09/06/2024 16:27

to quote the OP when you are responding to the OP

The whole point of a MN thread is that the conversation is all in response to the OP. You have the ability to @ another poster if your comment is directly to them and not the OP. But it’s a given that the main subject of a thread is the OP’s (sometimes evolving) issue or thought.

Many many Mumsnet threads are an evolving conversation between dozens of people, not a dialogue between the OP and Everyone Else.

No paragraphs, minimal punctuation, lots of abbreviations, basically a stream of consciousness from someone who hasn't read it through before pressing Post to see if it makes sense. I never bother with OPs like that.

Yes I'm not bothered when people quote the OP of threads like that, because I've never got that far
amyway.

No need yo tell me that - I’m on the 160 somethingth Archers thread.Grin I was just trying to simplify the concept for my interlocutor.

I've never had one either. I get a dot if I have a PM. That's all.

Regardless of dots/notifications you don't to quote the OP. If I start a thread I check it regularly and assume replies are to me, unless they @ or quote someone else.

ABirdsEyeView · 12/06/2024 07:47

I hate the quote function generally. It would be fine if someone was quoting a short paragraph but I'm fed up of having to re read or scroll past loads of posts where the same thing has been quoted more than once.

The old copy and paste method meant that at least a poster had to put some effort into quoting, so used it sparingly and confined their quote to the relevant information.

saraclara · 12/06/2024 08:07

For those who are using it so that the OP sees their response, just @ the OP. You don't need to go and find their handle. If you just type @ MN helpfully shows you the OP's handle at the top of the suggested list

Please please can you make the OP unquotable?
