My neighbour's optician's cousin works in IT and said it's uber simple to amend.

Save all of our heads, please.

For the life of me I can't work out why people get worked up about this. Just scroll on by.

Some people get annoyed by tiny things. They are it appears incapable of scrolling by.

SoupDragon · 19/05/2024 21:23

MsCheeryble · 19/05/2024 21:16

Chances are you can do that just by copying and pasting the salient part of the OP, not the whole thing.

Equally, you could simply skim over a quoted OP.

MsMajeika · 19/05/2024 21:26

Itsabeautufulday · 19/05/2024 21:18

You can't see the OP on second and subsequent pages. What's the big deal with quoting. You don't need to read it again.

Edited

The big deal is that we have to scroll through posts and posts of people quoting the OP, and they are sometimes paragraphs long.

I think it's safe to assume that EVERY post is a reply to the OP unless it states otherwise.

I'd love to hear your rationale behind quoting the OP. When having a conversation with someone, do you also repeat back everything they've said before replying?

But every post is not a reply to the OP especially if there's a bunfight raging on.

Obviously not, that's quite different.

You are really bothered by this. I find that a bit OTT.

A lot of us have all the posts on one single page so you could be scrolling it for an hour without seeing OPs post again.

Do you quote anything back at people in a real conversation?? 😂😂 how is that a sensible comparison?

Nope, I can't. Just see the name of OP unless I click on 'see all' next to OP name.

I guess depending on how you access the website different formats are seen.

Precisely. It's not comparable. It's a mete website of opinions, not a 1:1 conversation. Completely different.

I would say that the general understanding is that if you want to reply to someone specific (e.g. bunfight) you reply to that person. All other replies are for the OP.

Well, as you can see from this thread, quite a few people are bothered by this because it's annoying as hell!

But you do you 🤣

I do know how MN works. And if I want to quote and reply directly to the OP then I will carry on doing so.

Genuine questions: why do you do that instead of just saying "OP, ....."?

Do you think people haven't read the OP so you need to repeat? Or do you think they have read it but need to read it again?

How do you think anyone responded to the OP before the quote function was brought in?

Just trying to understand the train of thought that leads to posting the one post repeatedly that most posters are likely to have read.

It's just the same as quoting any other post. I don't get all the angst over it tbh.

Considering you've posted more than anyone in this thread, the angst would seem to be coming from your direction.

I didn't realise there was also a limit to how many times I could post on a thread.

Perhaps you could start a thread in site stuff suggesting a limit?

LordSnot · 19/05/2024 22:15

😂Some people are so odd.

LookItsMeAgain · 19/05/2024 22:21

Q124 · 15/05/2024 16:56

Yes agreed! Also stop people resurrecting threads from years ago and replying like it's still relevant now.

As soon as MN introduced the "You liked this thread, so you might like these other threads" bit (it can be hidden in settings but I now see that it's popping up in the middle of threads on a screen so they've introduced something new recently) there was an outcry because old threads that some posters made but based on the topic may not have wanted to see again kept being selected by some stupid algorithm.

They won't introduce this because, from MN perspective, any hit on a page, even an old one, is a revenue stream and money talks.

So do you think people haven't read the OP so you need to repeat? Or do you think they have read it but need to read it again?

I have it set to view 100 posts at a time. On a very long thread it is sometimes difficult to work out who is talking about which post and whether they are responding to the OP or to someone else, and by the time you have scrolled up and down, you are all over the place and can't remember what you wanted to say in the first place.

I agree with a pp who said it would be good if we could just quote excerpts rather than an entire post. I'm on another forum (hobby-related) and it allows you to do that on there.

VeraForever · 19/05/2024 22:54

I just scroll past. Takes less than a second.

It's a setting you can turn on but it's a quite popular one.

Go to settings, then "Talk settings" and there is an option there to set how many posts you want to see per page, (25, 50, 100, or all).

Blanketison · 20/05/2024 00:03

100% agree.
Also was scrolling waiting for some twat to have quoted the OP, and v pleased to see it’s not happened… yet!!
