My neighbour's optician's cousin works in IT and said it's uber simple to amend.

Save all of our heads, please.

Why are people so bothered by this 🤷 Sometimes when posters don’t quote there are odd misinterpretations of replies. I think that’s why people do it and do I can live with that

Because sometimes you have to scroll through the same 8 paragraphs of lengthy OP description of their situation 15 or 20 times in a row to see each responder's one-line or one-word (YABU) reply. It makes it difficult to keep track of where you are in a page if the OP gets reposted every 2 or 3 posts and nakes it difficult to see the responses in between.

Agreed

It doesn’t bother me.

i 100% agree, was just about to create a thread

We ALL read the sodding OP! It's unavoidable.

Then you scroll down to see that some numpty has quoted the whole post we have just read and then further added their two penneth so we can benefit from their MN genius and sage advice.

Maybe we should just report these posts ask to get them removed. Put it in the same category as a TAAT.

darkchocolatecoffee · 16/05/2024 13:07

I never understand why people quote the OP - it’s especially annoying when it’s a very long OP. We should be able to report when people do this because it ruins the user experience.

HurdyGurdy19 · 16/05/2024 13:32

On a previous parenting forum, posts, including OPs, were often quoted, especially if it was a somewhat controversial topic, so that if the poster wanted to delete their post, the quoted one was still visible.

But I don't think that's possible on here, is it? Posts that are deleted are automatically removed in later posts that quote it?

Also posters can't remove their own posts: only MNHQ can do that, so there's not the same need to hold people to account for things they've backtracked on.

FuckTheClubUp · 17/05/2024 09:04

Has anyone had a response from MNHQ on this? I’d really like to know if there’s any plans on amending this

Sometimes it’s PAGES later too… <fume>

🤣

Justcats · 19/05/2024 17:56

It doesn't bother me at all. Sometimes you just want to reply to the Op and not any of the other posts. You can't reply directly to a post on MN so it's the only way to do it.

CoffeeAndPeanuts · 19/05/2024 18:03

Q124 · 15/05/2024 16:56

Yes agreed! Also stop people resurrecting threads from years ago and replying like it's still relevant now.

@Q124

its FAR worse since they started the STUPID 'similar threads' or whatever it is underneath threads! I've tried to train myself not to click on them.

@StandingOvulation

Another vote for you!!

my own wish is that it would take you back the post you quoted after you've posted!! I keep losing my place on the thread!!

No it's not! Just post, it's obvious you're replying to the OP OR @ op name, you do not need to quote the OP

SerafinasGoose · 19/05/2024 18:06

Brava!

And to this I'd add: can zombie threads automatically be closed after 6 months?

For the life of me I can't work out why people get worked up about this. Just scroll on by.

crenellations · 19/05/2024 19:34

It's tedious scrolling by a really long page full of the exact same block of text repeated over and over and over again, often spanning more than one screen in length, trying to spot what's new in between. Fair enough if that's what you actually enjoy doing with your time but I think it's fine for people to suggest ways to avoid it.

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 19/05/2024 19:55

Oh god yes please

sanityisamyth · 19/05/2024 20:11

Absolutely supporting this!

Justleaveitblankthen · 19/05/2024 20:37

There is always someone around 3 posts from the start who decides to quote the entire OP. 🤬
Why? It's literally less than a thumbstroke upthread.

I can never be bothered to check the Posters name to see if it's always the same person, but it annoys me immensely.

LongSinceGotUpAndGone · 19/05/2024 20:43

Disagree. Sometimes a thread moves in a completely different direction, so it's reasonable to indicate you are responding to the original point, not things the OP might have said since on tangential topics.

LizzieBennett73 · 19/05/2024 21:03

I think it's a drawing attention thing, like "here is my response and I demand you read it OP".

MsCheeryble · 19/05/2024 21:16

Chances are you can do that just by copying and pasting the salient part of the OP, not the whole thing.

MsMajeika · 19/05/2024 21:17

Pleeeeease implement this!

60andsomething · 19/05/2024 21:18

You quote the op when you are replying directly to the OP. It has a function.

Itsabeautufulday · 19/05/2024 21:18

TheChippendenSpook · 15/05/2024 12:13

It's definitely useful for quoting other posts but I agree, people quoting the original post is ridiculous.

You can't see the OP on second and subsequent pages. What's the big deal with quoting. You don't need to read it again.

Itsabeautufulday · 19/05/2024 21:21
