UPDATE FROM MNHQ - new Hidden Gratitude feature

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 04/09/2023 10:31

Today we’re launching a new feature called Hidden Gratitude. We’ve had many requests over the years for a like button on Mumsnet but shared concerns that some have expressed about it being a bit reductive and possibly turning discussions into a popularity contest.

Nonetheless, we think it would be nice to be able to thank posters for a particularly helpful or generous post. Hidden Gratitude is an easy way to show appreciation but as the name suggests, there will be no publicly visible 'like' count, only the user who has been given thanks can see it.

All you need to do is hit the “thanks” icon on the post you want to appreciate. The poster will receive a notification which will let them know who has “thanked” them. That’s it!

And, before you ask - at the time of writing we have no plans to introduce a hidden ingratitude button…

I like this feature. My only worry is that because I couldn't see if the thanks feature has worked, I might have sent someone lots of thanks unintentionally as I was expecting something to say the thanks had gone.

You can see it's worked as the Thanks button gets emboldened, for want of a better word.

You can only thanks once.

nettie434 · 04/09/2023 11:40

Thank you - I can't see the emboldened thanks but I am on the mobile site and somebody suggested that they couldn't see it either. I'll try it on the laptop. In the meantime, thanks! 😀

In that case the thanks I have just sent you hasn’t worked?

JaneJeffer · 04/09/2023 11:41

Nobody has sent me thanks. Ungrateful fuckers.

Roussette · 04/09/2023 11:41

I never go on notifications, and happy that I don't get an email.

I had a couple of 'thanks' this morning and could see it on the post that was thanked.

Very very wise MNHQ that it's visible only to the poster who is thanked! we don't want carnage 😂

Soubriquet · 04/09/2023 11:42

My only issue is, when we press it, there’s nothing to acknowledge that you’ve pressed it. The icon doesn’t colour in, there’s no pop up saying you’ve sent the like.

Roussette · 04/09/2023 11:42

You can undo your 'thanks' by pressing it again. That's good. I don't want to inadvertently thank someone 😁

Yes, I can't see any thanks from you for some reason.

LaMarschallin · 04/09/2023 11:47

Does it work immediately you've hit the button or is there a second step to confirm you actually want to send "Thanks"?
I often hit the "Report" button by accident, so I can see myself sending inadvertent "Thanks" a fair amount if my gratitude wings its way immediately.

(And, by the way, it's as well the thanks are only visible to the recipient because everyone would be jealous to know about the tidal wave of gratitude that's already washed over me and my wonderful posts. Ahem.)

Ciarianna · 04/09/2023 11:47

Please please PLEASE put the QUOTE link back where it was!!!!

LaMarschallin · 04/09/2023 11:50

Ah! Cross-post.
That's answered my question.
A big public "Thanks", Roussette Grin

BaronessBomburst · 04/09/2023 11:51

How many posters have thanked @MyColdDeadHeart ? Grin

It works immediately!

I can picture a not too distant thread where a poster will post an unpopular view and then screenshot all the people who thanked them as proof that they are not alone in their thinking.

What does reply do? Same as add post?

Yes it literally takes you to the reply box. It's totally pointless.

Wendysfriend · 04/09/2023 11:54

I normally welcome change and have always wanted a like button, however isn't the main purpose of a like button for everyone to see who likes/agrees/thanks and maybe encourage no nasty replies.

Having it hidden will mean people will click it, not post a reply with thanks or support and threads will get fewer replies.

Rummikub · 04/09/2023 11:55

So, where’s quote?
how do I quote a post?

Click the three dots next to the post there you will find the quote option and on your own posts you will also find the edit feature.

Rummikub · 04/09/2023 12:00

Thanks @YourNameGoesHere

I've just tried that and unfortunately my three dots don’t work! Think it must be my old iOS.

I thought a "Like" button would also be useful for getting rid of the reams of quoted posts (which all seem to be extra long) with "This" or 👍added.
However, I've never been on a site with such a facility and have read that "Like" buttons are dreadful and cause pile-ons.
So I bow to more frequent internet users' opinions 🤷‍♀️

YourNameGoesHere · 04/09/2023 12:01

Oh no. That's not good all the most useful features are hidden within the 3 dots.

KevinAndHerKits · 04/09/2023 12:04

I was very anti, because I think removing Quote and leaving Reply is a terrible choice. However I've now had a Thanks, so I'm now all in favour! This is what it looks like on Safari.

KevinAndHerKits · 04/09/2023 12:04

NB you'll need to expand the picture to see the count on the Thanks at the bottom left of my precious post.

JaneJeffer · 04/09/2023 12:08

I'd prefer MN to update the iOS app so we can get PMs and use gifs. We won't be able to thank anyone or see if we've been thanked anyway.

Samcro · 04/09/2023 12:13

I have no idea how to find out if someone has "thanked" me. (maybe because no one has lol)
