Why are you making fun of someone's appearance with your logo change

Reasonableadjustments · 06/05/2023 06:50

Can I ask why you've changed the logo to be big ears to poke fun at King Charles?

I'm not a royalist but I don't think making fun of someone like this for their appearance is really fair.

Satire is dead, killed off by squealing accusations of bullying of the most privileged, those with Orwell's boot stamping on our human faces - for ever

Satire is about mocking ideas, policies and human foolishness; it is not about mocking a person's appearance. Just so's you know.

Indeed. Take the piss out of the leaky pen incident all you like. The people’s oath malarkey? Have at it. The wealth, the privilege, the banality - all up for grabs. But this isn’t satire, it’s just taking the piss out of one physical feature. Anymore than it was satire when pissed up men screamed insults at me in the street because of my hair colour.

I think if you want to see what the “spirit of the site” is you need look no further than the AIBU topic. A topic which was deliberately created in order to give posters a platform to bully others, and something which has only got worse since it came into being.

MN has long since stopped being a site by parents for parents. It’s a site which encourages ablism, racism, homophobia and transphobia because that’s what the tabloids pay mn to see, and to publish.

I like the logo. I Like to think KC has a GSOH about his ears. Nothing to be ashamed of so why would he mind ?

I mind being laughed at because of the way I walk.

It's not as if I can help it it's nothing to be ashamed of. So I should just laugh along when people mock me?

Wow. It’s awful and I’m shocked that you’d think it is ok. Definitely not “in the spirit of the site”.

Jonei · 06/05/2023 08:59

I don't care. It's funny. Well done MNHQ.

I’m really surprised at this logo. The crown is fine, the ears aren’t. I haven’t heard anyone mock the ears since I was little, I don’t even notice them now. It’s a dated, horrible approach. Either do something like the crown or nothing at all. Really badly judged and to quote mn back st mn ‘not in the spirit of the site’.

100% this.

Come on @mnhq, get rid of this. It's terrible!

I genuinely didn't know there were so many po-faced professionally offended people in the world. Charles Windsor is known for his ears as an immediate identifying feature in political cartoons etc. World leaders and politicians past and present are always lampooned in this way, as they should be - Johnson, May, Blair, Sunak, Major, Thatcher and Elizabeth Windsor, Biden, Merkel, Trump, Macron et al. Satire is dead, killed off by squealing accusations of bullying of the most privileged, those with Orwell's boot stamping on our human faces - for ever. Never have do many grips been so desperately needed.

You're very brave. Grin

rule of thumb, when there's a lot of snarly posts on one thread, better just to swerve it.

I've seen 3 threads filling up fast on this in the last 5 minutes! I agree it's pathetic and shaming someone for something they can't help.

The idea that it's satire is frankly ridiculous. Satire makes a point about a persons bad or ridiculous behaviour, this is just a pair of ears. It's just plain mocking someone, there's no satire.

Can I take the piss out of your kids looks? Since you're ok with it being done to others

Tarantullah · 06/05/2023 09:03

Satire is dead, killed off by squealing accusations of bullying of the most privileged

Satire is meant to be funny isn't it? I don't think it's a bad thing that laughing at aspects of someone's appearance of which they can't help and with which they have been mocked, ridiculed and laughed at for years is something people now call out as not funny. Generally MN is very fair regarding criticism of the royals (well unless it's Meghan and Harry but that's another thread I suspect); people can talk about their criticisms of the monarchy or his actions which is good and free speech and all that- but yes people should call out people being cruel.

Applerumbl · 06/05/2023 09:04

Awful - who thought this was a good idea - old school bullies?

Rollerbird · 06/05/2023 09:04

Mean. Take it down

Alltheprettyseahorses · 06/05/2023 09:04

The ridiculous thing about this is Charles Windsor isn't even being mocked. The famous ears mean the logo is instantly recognisable as him, that's all. No judgement is attached to it. Everyone on this thread crying about bullying has immediately felt there's something wrong with them when there isn't. Unconscious bias and hypocrisy is rampant, especially given the number of threads on here attacking other divisive political and roysl figures for the way they look that are still standing.

MustardGreenAndPlum · 06/05/2023 09:04

Banoffeepie21 · 06/05/2023 06:58

There are at least two other threads on this topic OP

Maybe the more threads the better.

Charles was horrifically bullied as a child, his ears were a major part of that, where his bullies used to pull his ears.

however again you’re missing the point. It’s about the fact members do not support mocking someone’s physical features, irrelevant of who they are.

Jonei · 06/05/2023 09:05

Lol. Watching peoples leaping to defend an over privileged mans ears is even funnier.

MustardGreenAndPlum · 06/05/2023 09:06

I have never made fun of anyone for how they look, neither here nor in real life. And two wrongs don't make a right. And any mocking comments such as you describe should also be deleted

Nope.

Mocking someone for physical features they can’t control is bullying.

By all means mock these people for what they do and say, cause those are choices they make. How they look is an entirely separate matter.

You reckon the crown wouldn't be a big enough clue to the theme of the logo change? A crown on a logo on the day of the coronation - who on earth could it be in honour of? 🤔

Jonei · 06/05/2023 09:08

If people are leaping to defend the ears, then the majority here must unconsciously think that big ears are a bad thing.

Examine that unconscious bias people...
