Why are you making fun of someone's appearance with your logo change

Reasonableadjustments · 06/05/2023 06:50

Can I ask why you've changed the logo to be big ears to poke fun at King Charles?

I'm not a royalist but I don't think making fun of someone like this for their appearance is really fair.

I do hope Justine was making fun of the royals when she got her CBE

Or did she miss that memo?

I wonder if she left the chippy republican manning the site to post this stuff whilst at a coronation do

LittleBrenda · 06/05/2023 22:12

What's the amount of money a person needs to have before we can attack their appearance?

Will that information be released monthly?

Sunak is richer than the King already isn't he so he's OK for us to attack?

fUNNYfACE36 · 06/05/2023 22:42

Do the rich and powerful not have feelings any more?

It's not about the rich and powerful's feelings. It's about refusing to mock big or bat ears. I live with lifelong pain from my childhood ear pinning. If "big ears" was not an insult, my parents would not have agreed to that purely cosmetic surgery.

Furries · 07/05/2023 02:20

Rubbish response from HQ.

I, too, would like to know their criteria/cut-off level as to when it becomes fine to be free to mock the rich/privileged etc.

Have reported their post back to them.

This site keeps taking some slightly odd turns.

In a world where people are being arrested for being antimonarchist, we think it’s important as a society that we can freely make fun of the rich and powerful but clearly we misjudged the mood and it was poorly executed.

It must have been an error surely? Did she miss out a sentence after powerful??

Hi everyone - we’re sorry that the logo has upset everyone. We honestly didn’t think beforehand how it might go down as it was intended as bit of fun - but we take your point. In a world where people are being arrested for being antimonarchist, we think it’s important as a society that we can freely make fun of the rich and powerful but clearly we misjudged the mood and it was poorly executed. We've now taken it down.

Come off it! Don't compare the logo to antic monarchist protestors.

There was nothing in that logo that critiqued an archaic institution which allows the preservation of significant wealth and power along hereditary lines. Just playground teasing.

In a world where people are dying as a result of vaccine injuries, and seeing as mumsnet think it’s important as a society that you can make fun of the rich and powerful, so why not put some dollar signs on the covid threads?

I mean it’s not as if Pfizer and others haven’t made billions from this.

When since have they thought this to be important?

I seem to recall some celeb threads going as NITS. Not all though maybe there’s an approved laugh at these people list

Did Justine really say ok post that, they’re not short of a bob or two

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 07/05/2023 09:13

"we think it’s important as a society that we can freely make fun of the rich and powerful...."

@mumsnet, is this a joke? It certainly isn't an apology!

Do you teach kids this?

There'll always be someone richer, so where is the cut off point before you're deemed too poor to be bullied?

Bullying is just plain wrong, be it at school, in the workplace, at home or online.
To base it on looks, that most people can't change, is deplorable.

On a site meant for supporting each other, when the people at the top come up with such, it's disgusting.

But people make mistakes, and having been iven a chance to respond,
you come up with that as an apology????

Reasonableadjustments · 07/05/2023 09:14

Justine got her CBE in 2017.

Protestors were getting arrested before that and many times since. Is she going to hand her cbe back? Since she feels so strongly?

Would it be ok to change the logo in such a way that it mocked an element of her appearance, given that she's one of the rich and powerful?

Where's the income cut off at which mocking becomes allowed? Does that apply to all ages or is it ok to mock the physical appearance of a child if they have wealthy parents?

"didn’t think beforehand how it might go down as it was intended as bit of fun".

You're a paid adult in social media, surely part of your role is to bloody well think about these things.

StormzyinaTCup · 07/05/2023 09:42

Yes, I think we need need an appendix to the MN T&Cs on this 'new rule' just so we are all clear:

  1. what's the income bracket?
  2. Is it gender specific?
  3. Is it culturally and ethnically inclusive?
  4. is it just physical appearance or are we including learning difficulties?
  5. are rich people's children fair game?

MNHQ have not put out an apology they have put out a justification and it's made a bad situation worse. They should be way better than this.

VisionsOfSplendour · 07/05/2023 09:44

**

So if we un pick that a little @YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet are those who become rich through bloody hard work or winning the lottery or luck in the property market fair game or is it the landed gentry only?

What about for example someone who receives a large insurance payout as a result to horrendous medical malpractice?

I can't help but think that your policy is a little ill judged and light on detail, wlll you be updating the guidelines?

Reasonableadjustments · 07/05/2023 09:46

Lady Louise has a physical difference. Would it be ok on the day of her 21st birthday to change the logo to make mockery of that physical difference as she is rich and powerful? If not, why not.

(Note - I don't think this should be done at all but this is where this policy change takes us)

OP posts:
MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 07/05/2023 09:59

@YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet

so it’s ok to take the piss out of someone because of their appearance if they are rich and powerful? Seriously? Bullying someone according to their appearance is bullying; however rich and powerful they are, and whoever they are. Have fixed your statement for you…

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet ·Yesterday 10:26

Hi everyone - we’re SO sorry that the logo has upset everyone. We honestly didn’t think beforehand how it might go down as it was misguidedly intended as bit of fun - but we fully understand quite how wrong we were to make fun of someone’s appearance, as that can never be the right thing to do. We've now taken it down; apologies again. We will do better in future to think these things through properly.

Or Eugenie's Scoliosis, where do MN sit on that, is she fair game?

Whinge · 07/05/2023 10:08

I'm sure many of us expected a sorry not sorry response, but that response is shocking. Shock

Hedonism · 07/05/2023 10:20

I don't think anyone should be making fun of anyone tbh. I agree with pp that the response is more problematic than the logo was in the first place.

kittensinthekitchen · 07/05/2023 10:55

I think this is going to be another occasion when MN make a shitty comment then disappear, waiting for it to be forgotten again 🙄

I agree. Move along now, nothing to see here.

I agree, as long as it's their behaviour, ideas or actions that are being shown up; never their physical appearance or anything else beyond their control.

So can we make fun of the ‘poor’ then? Plenty of people on here think it’s ok to expect 100% tax from those on PAYE to support the welfare system. If we are talking about being allowed to mock people for ideas - these posters are not fair game? Where is the cut off for making fun out of someone by socio-economic status. Can we expand this to other characteristics or not?

So when are you going to make fun of Justine Roberts?
