Why are you making fun of someone's appearance with your logo change

Reasonableadjustments · 06/05/2023 06:50

Can I ask why you've changed the logo to be big ears to poke fun at King Charles?

I'm not a royalist but I don't think making fun of someone like this for their appearance is really fair.

Doesn’t seem in the spirit and I’m no royalist.

I din't give a single fuck about Charlie.

You’re missing the point. It is not about if you care about Charles or not. It is about whether it’s acceptable to take the piss out of someone’s appearance. You feel it’s ok if it someone’s uou don’t care about. Most others don’t.

I am not remotely a fan of the monarchy, but having received a 'warning' email from mnhq last week about some of my posts "not being in the spirit", and basically telling me to 'be kind', the hypocrisy is screamingly apparent here.

I’ve been suspended 3 times in the past 2 weeks after almost 15 years of never having such a thing.
No idea what’s going on at HQ

Fine. Neither do I.

Do you have any fucks to give about children being teased about their ears? The normalization of ‘Ears like King Charles’ as an insult.
Would it be ok to draw a pair of large ears on the class photo of a particular child, for the Lolz?

It’s not about Charles, it’s about perpetuating a bullying trope that affects many more people than him.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 06/05/2023 08:14

As for all the people saying it's OK because they happen not to like the individual who is being mocked here - get a grip. The rest of us are saying it's not OK to mock anybody in this way, no matter who they are and what they've done. The reason most of us are asking for this to be changed is because of what it says about Mumsnet, not because we are all devoted subjects of King Charles.

EarringsandLipstick · 06/05/2023 08:04

It's really shocking that despite all the threads and reports, MN have neither commented nor changed it.

I bet they can't change it easily due to their problematic IT, but not to even acknowledge the poor taste of what they have done is shocking.

It would take seconds for anyone vaguely competent to remove it but their IT team have proven on multiple occasions that they’re anything but that!

GoldenGorilla · 06/05/2023 08:16

@MNHQ - I’ve been on this site for what feels like forever, maybe since 2006? Used it for advice on cooking, relationships, gardening, parenting. The support on this site got me through some traumatic events. And these days it’s just….unpleasant here. Threads descend into pointless bullying, which you let stand, posters are repeatedly mean and unhelpful and you don’t ban them. And now you are openly mocking somebody’s physical appearance, which is a classic bullies tactic. I just don’t know what this site is for, or about, anymore.

SunnyEgg · 06/05/2023 08:16

DancingWithTheMoonlitKnight · 06/05/2023 08:09

I think it's funny. 🤣

Where do you draw the line?

Is it anything goes when physical appearance can be mocked, are you ok with it for people you know?

Bigpinktrain · 06/05/2023 08:17

@Reasonableadjustments I agree it’s not funny, but don’t really think it’s bullying, just a cheap shot, that many others would also do, in fact many ‘fans’ on the mall are wearing fake ears. I’m sure HQ would say it’s a sign of affection…I don’t know, don’t really care. I think on the barometer of what I’ve seen as bullying on this site, the logo scores quite low.

DemonicCaveMaggot · 06/05/2023 08:17

People with fragile X syndrome are charaterized by having ears that stick out. Horrible if their parents are on here to see that their children's physical differences are fair game for mocking by adults on a parenting forum, as if they don't get enough of that at school.

I think I will give Mumsnet a rest for the next few days, no more money earning clicks from me for a while.

Reasonableadjustments · 06/05/2023 08:17

I was bullied all the way through school because of a physical difference.

Mumsnet are now saying that's ok.

I disagree.

I've been made fun of all my life because of a physical difference and I thought mumsnet was a better place than that.

Seems I was wrong.

Giselletheunicorn · 06/05/2023 08:18

Agree - it's not really in the spirit of Mumsnet....needs to come down.

grannyjacob · 06/05/2023 08:18

I’m no Royalist but agree with the majority, the temporary logo is not at all funny. Please remove it.

LubaLuca · 06/05/2023 08:19

Imagine if the company you worked for changed their logo in the same way this weekend! Or if Royal Mail, the NHS, Google etc stuck a pair of big ears on their logo for lolz.

It beggars belief that MN did this.

I’ve reported disablist comments on threads in the past and they’ve not been deleted , whoever makes the decisions here has a warped mind it seems and doesn’t know what’s appropriate

Quoronation · 06/05/2023 08:19

Can they not just revert back to the standard M? We can pretend there's a crown on it if we really want.

Bigpinktrain · 06/05/2023 08:20

Yeah mumsnet isn’t at all better than that.

Catsmere · 06/05/2023 08:20

@mnhq this is puerile and completely hypocritical when you delete people’s threads for “not in the spirit of the site” stuff. Doesn’t matter what you think of the man or the institution, this isn’t witty, isn’t satire, it’s tired old schoolyard-bully level stuff that’s been trotted out since before most of your tech crew were probably born. Are you going to respond, or just ignore the many, many complaints about this until the Coronation is over, and then shrug it all off and delete the hideous thing?

Reasonableadjustments · 06/05/2023 08:20

It's not just about Charles and the size of his ears. It's about the message it sends about what mumsnet consider fair game for the lolz. And that's not ok.

OP posts:
Dontcallmescarface · 06/05/2023 08:20

I posted this on another thread but I'll put it here as well who knows whether @MNHQ will care enough to read it (doubt it).

As someone who has spent years being mocked about my appearance (the clue is in the username), to see MN clearly doing the same for the "laughs" is not on. If there is ever an apology no doubt it will have a "chill out it was only a bit of bantz" type ring to it.

In what way, can you articulate where the humour is?

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 06/05/2023 08:21

@MNHQ This is really disappointing. I cannot believe that anyone would think this was a good idea.

Not big or clever. Certainly not funny.
