Why are you making fun of someone's appearance with your logo change

Reasonableadjustments · 06/05/2023 06:50

Can I ask why you've changed the logo to be big ears to poke fun at King Charles?

I'm not a royalist but I don't think making fun of someone like this for their appearance is really fair.

Sure, hold people of privilege and power to account for what they do, say and the way they lead their influential lives, but mocking their physical appearance? Come on. This reply isn’t the ‘save’ you may have thought.

I agree. It’s a classic “non-apology apology”.

Saucery · 06/05/2023 11:01

To criticise (justifiably) the arrest of anti monarchist protestors is fine. You could have put a crown on the M and little bars across the ‘net’, for instance.
Thanks for taking down the ears. The sooner that lazy caricature disappears the better. Not for Charles, for the children and ordinary people teased and bullied for their physical appearance.

Jonei · 06/05/2023 10:39

I would like MN to publicly apologise to the King

Oh my god. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

This is hilarious.

You seem to have missed the heavy sarcasm in that post.

AutumnCrow · 06/05/2023 11:06

People defending 'satire' fail to recognise satire in news that will shock absolutely no-one

HairyFarnbarn · 06/05/2023 11:12

@YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet you badly misjudged this.

yes it’s important to be able to express opinions about the rich and powerful, but commenting on their appearance is just childish bullying behaviour. Shame on you all.

sparklefresh · 06/05/2023 11:19

Mock people for their actions, what they say, their choices. Don't mock them for their physical appearance. Ever. @beckymumsnet you and your colleagues made a very poor choice.

sparklefresh · 06/05/2023 11:19

Sorry, @YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet .

Well said.
Absolutely childish caricature, the person who designed that, and those who approved it, obviously have had an easy ride in life.

Crumbcatcher · 06/05/2023 11:31

It's not the fact that it was directed at Charles though is it? It's that you think it's okay to mock appearances. Who will be the next target?

Florissante · 06/05/2023 11:31

It was unkind and cruel. Not cool, MN.

CosmosQueen · 06/05/2023 11:34

Hi everyone - we’re sorry that the logo has upset everyone. We honestly didn’t think beforehand how it might go down as it was intended as bit of fun - but we take your point. In a world where people are being arrested for being antimonarchist, we think it’s important as a society that we can freely make fun of the rich and powerful but clearly we misjudged the mood and it was poorly executed. We've now taken it down.

Seriously?
’A bit of fun’?
sickening response. Or is it now ok for posters to freely mock anyone?
I’m ashamed of your response.

CosmosQueen · 06/05/2023 11:35

…’freely make fun of the rich and powerful…’
okaaay……..
Not on as far as I’m concerned.

CosmosQueen · 06/05/2023 11:36

SirChenjins · 06/05/2023 10:50

Yep - but it follows a pattern.

Glad to see it’s been amen down but fuck me @YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet making fun of someone’s appearance under the guise of protecting freedom of speech and challenging societal inequalities is stretching the parameters of belief a bit.

Indeed.

What is your deciding level of wealth and power for bullying to become ok then?

NotBadConsidering · 06/05/2023 11:42

Hoppinggreen · 06/05/2023 10:31

How rich and powerful does someone have to be before we take the piss out of their appearance?
Millionaire? Multimillionaire?
Local Councillors? MP?

Yes, I’d like an answer to this too. What’s the wealth threshold? What counts as powerful?

It’s the hypocrisy that’s the problem. MNHQ regularly deletes threads attacking the appearance of people but they’ve decided certain people are fair game. Who is fair game? Can we have a list?

Or can we just assume everyone is fair game from now on?

BreatheAndFocus · 06/05/2023 11:42

One of my DC’s ears stick out a lot. So far, they’re too young to have noticed or thought about it, and thankfully it’s not been an issue at school. I’m very glad they didn’t see your cruel, nasty, mocking of someone with ‘different’ ears. The fact he’s the King is utterly irrelevant. It’s a nasty thing to do and sends a horrible message that it’s ok to make fun of people’s appearances.

Were you being held hostage when you wrote that?

What a ridiculous justification, you don't actually believe that a rich person is fair game for mockery simply be way of them being rich?

What a weird please MNHQ must be

The way your website has gone in recent times makes perfect sense now. The abuse for example higher rate tax payers get. People are abused for daring to get an education with expectations that everyone on PAYE should be funding everyone else. It’s ok to abuse people if you think they have more money than you. It’s MNHQ condoned.

Excuse me?! How rich does a person have to be, that they should be willing to be bullied?

This message is worse than the logo cock-up

Mumsanetta · 06/05/2023 11:56

@YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet please can you clarify how this logo was not a personal attack which is a breach of MN talk guidelines. Sure anyone can now argue that posts shouldn’t be deleted as they are simply exercising their right to free speech?

StraightOuttaContext · 06/05/2023 11:56

Can't believe someone's dragged King Cnut into this mess...

Then make fun of what they say, and their privilege.

Really poor decision. This comment isn't much better, actually.

LiveAHappyLifeBePositive · 06/05/2023 11:57

So MNHQ apologises by saying it’s ok to make fun of the rich.
In the spirit of equality then, it seems anyone on MN can therefore make fun of anyones appearance. !?

readbooksdrinktea · 06/05/2023 11:59

But actually, of course, no one should be made fun of. Ideally.

SirChenjins · 06/05/2023 12:00

Only if they’re rich. Perhaps MN could clarify what the cut-off income level for this is? @YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet
