Why are you making fun of someone's appearance with your logo change

Reasonableadjustments · 06/05/2023 06:50

Can I ask why you've changed the logo to be big ears to poke fun at King Charles?

I'm not a royalist but I don't think making fun of someone like this for their appearance is really fair.

I’m glad it’s been taken down, but that response is the kind of thing I’d expect a teenager to say in a sulky tone, when challenged on something. Yes of course we should be challenging the injustice of a society where all the wealth and power is held by such a small number of people. But a ‘you have big ears, ha ha ha ha ha’ chant is clearly not achieving this (and it’s pretty disingenuous to suggest that was the aim!), and actually just makes you look a bit dim.

Choconut · 06/05/2023 12:01

Wow MNHQ think mocking someone's appearance is a bit of fun.

What an horrendous non apology.

Stephen Hawking had a net worth of 20 mill on his death and was hugely influential, does that make him fair game?

Lostinalibrary · 06/05/2023 12:03

SirChenjins · 06/05/2023 12:00

In the spirit of equality then, it seems anyone on MN can therefore make fun of anyones appearance

Only if they’re rich. Perhaps MN could clarify what the cut-off income level for this is? @YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet

Yes what is it? 40% tax or 45% tax. Usually those on PAYE who have got an education and a job on here. Or is it people with inherited wealth? People who miss the UC cut off? What’s the limit. Equally for equality does it work the other way around? What’s poor? Food bank use? UC claimant?

Yorkshirelass04 · 06/05/2023 12:05

I didn't see the logo but yes agree - cheap joke in poor taste.

We are better than that.

LubaLuca · 06/05/2023 12:08

Bloody hell! MNHQ think people can be mocked for their appearance because they're rich. So when someone on here posts a photo of themselves in a dress asking if they look okay, if we can confirm they're loaded we can have a bit of fun and laugh at their frizzy hair/wonky nose/big breasts. Good to know.

How insulting to say it was a case of misjudging the mood. If you genuinely think the majority of people using this site are the sort that would laugh at people's looks, well... If you think the mood is 'a bit anti-royal', don't do anything to mark the coronation - do you believe anyone would have been asking why you didn't put a little crown on the logo? 😕

Hi everyone - we’re sorry that the logo has upset everyone. We honestly didn’t think beforehand how it might go down as it was intended as bit of fun - but we take your point. In a world where people are being arrested for being antimonarchist, we think it’s important as a society that we can freely make fun of the rich and powerful but clearly we misjudged the mood and it was poorly executed. We've now taken it down.

Him having big ears has nothing to do with his wealthy privileged position though.

I'd happily eat the rich but I'd accord them some respect while I did it

Eat them? That doesn't seem terribly respectful.

You can do so without contributing to the prevailing view of bat ear that led to my purely cosmetic childhood ear surgery that has left me with a life of pain.

Crown falling off the first M, turn the E into a zipped mouth emoji, put handcuffs on some of the verticals, insert a leaky pen somewhere, you'd get the message across...

We should be able to make fun of the rich?

When do we start on Justine? I mean, she's pretty wealthy right? What feature of hers shall we discuss?

Just coming on to say the same!

icelollycraving · 06/05/2023 12:38

What a non apology. I’m glad you removed it, but should have just said it was ill judged, the rest is nonsensical and ridiculous. Making fun of people could be about their actions, not their physical appearance. I don’t think today is the day for mocking anyone in honesty.

1ittlegreen · 06/05/2023 12:39

Thank goodness they have silently changed it back to normal.

This site is so far from what it used to be and probably what I think it set out to be.

So much nastiness all the time from members on here and now the company itself.

Oh dear! That's your response? Really?

Taking the mickey out of a characteristic of someone that they have no control over isn't you making a stand with society and defending the antimonarchist stance, it's playground bullying, pure and simple, with the pathetic excuse of "it's just a bit of fun!" and it's also against the very first rule of your own Talk Guidelines: No Personal Attacks.

@YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet (or anyone at @MNHQ)
Please tell us why it's okay to break your own guidelines and how, in all good faith, you can take down any post in the future made by any poster that pokes fun at any celebrity for any reason, because as you have said, as a society it's important to be able to freely make fun of the rich and powerful? You have made a mockery of your own rules and now have lost all moral ground to take down other people's posts.

So disappointing.

MN - as in the organisation - has become deeply unpleasant & or

& problematic, I meant to finish

You do realise this forum is not a 'public service'. You are free to leave it anytime you wish for whatever reason you wish. Some people genuinely have absolutely nothing to do with their lives.

Is @YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet actually a real individual, or is it just the generic name all Mumsnet bods post under?

BrutusMcDogface · 06/05/2023 13:13

Good! It’s not making fun of the rich and powerful, it’s making fun of something he cannot help and is completely below the belt.

Believe me, I’m actually feeling quite negative feelings around the coronation, mainly because of the obscenely massive waste of money when people are struggling to feed themselves. Credibility is lost when you’re poking fun at the monarch’s appearance rather than the complete absurdity of it all.

Where did I say it was a 'public service'? I just pointed out their bullying tactics and the hypocrisy of them breaking their own rules. Which, as a forum (thanks for pointing the obvious out), I'm entitled to do.

Thanks for giving me permission to leave though, very kind of you. I also have lots going on in my life, but again, thanks for your concern! 😉

gamerchick · 06/05/2023 13:15

Nooo stay. I want to win my bet.

Although it's not looking promising. Need to up your game dudes.

ArcaneWireless · 06/05/2023 13:27

I for one am glad I got called out to a shout this morning and had time to temper my response a bit.

If you’d have caught me earlier I would have been going full Nan on the arses of MNHQ on here and would probably have got my jotters. It was just rude and unnecessary.

I agree that fun and a sense of humour is necessary in this world and there shouldn’t be a restriction on having a bit of fun, but having a pop at an appearance just isn’t ok. It is borderline cunty. Not even borderline really. Just plain cunty.

I’m glad it was removed.

StormzyinaTCup · 06/05/2023 13:28

I’ve banked that MN apology for use at a later date.

QuickGuide · 06/05/2023 13:31

I agree. If you're not royalists ignore the occasion, that's just plain nasty.
