At the top of the For Sale Board, setting out the etiquette of 1) Putting a relatively descriptive thread title of the item being sold (will make it far easier to search for what MNers need, and 2) Not to bump their thread so much that it blasts all other For Sale threads into oblivion.

It seems that there are some halfwits picturetrailers on the For Sale boards who are trampling all over decent MNers struggling to self-regulate and respect others' wishes in order to make it accessible to everyone.

see here.... Although I suspect you've been closely moderately said thread....

Thank you

As an aside, does anyone else have the urge to set themselves up a Feedback thread?

VVVQV · 22/01/2008 18:10

What are they for exactly? (DONT say feedback - I need detail)

The Huns set one up with a name in the header so people can say whether they're a trusted seller/buyer/hunnihunhun

I would quite happily moderate the for sales and wanted boards. SOme of them are just plain cheeky...i want laptop/ipod/brand new bugaboo etc etc.

I suspect that my harsh removing of all crap not so good items would not go down well though!

Ah, the For Sale boards. It's like Life On Mars over there. Don't really understand why it's a part of mumsnet when it is being abused. If you want to sell stuff, go on Ebay.

SheikYerbouti · 22/01/2008 18:26

They shpould be made to pay per listing, like e-bay.

MrsJohnCusack · 22/01/2008 18:31

much as it would be a shame for regular posters who want to sell stuff (though I've no idea how anyone would manage to even get their stuff SEEN) I think it all needs to go to a separate board hosted by mumsnet.

make sure Mumsnet still make money out of it - charge a yearly sub to use the service and put a limit on the number of threads you can start a week or something. or a charge per advert.

make some categories (baby 0-3 clothes, baby equipment, off the back of a lorry, unspecified tat etc) and make it so you HAVE to see what you're selling in the thread title

link to it from the home page by all means

I can't think of a way to make it so that regulars can sell their stuff avoiding all that I'm afraid - I think that utopian idea has been stamped all over now

expatinscotland · 22/01/2008 18:35

Oh gawd, fuck it, these sellers just can't let it go.

Ban it. Get rid of it entirely or charge the same fees as Ebay and restrict selling or tell the Inland Revenue about people who sell a lot.

MerlinsBeard · 22/01/2008 18:37

either ban it or heavily moderate it - ie with the ability to LOCK the threads, depete them etc AND charge fees like Ebay

SheikYerbouti · 22/01/2008 18:40

and then we never need to hear about loolas in nob-cheese yellow ever again

anorak · 22/01/2008 19:00

I decided to hide the buying and selling section last week after 4 1/2 years here never having wanted to hide anything before . It has become ridiculous and I'm appalled at the way aitch has been spoken to as well.

I've always believed that all areas of mumsnet should be accessible to all posters however old, new or regular, because none of us own the forum (bar those in MNHQ), it is a public area, and anyone may need help at any time.

However the site would not exist if not for its members and posting an item for sale is a privilege, not a right. No one is going to suffer by not being allowed to post an item for sale. Therefore restricting the for sale boards to regulars/posters who have been around for a while or post a certain amount on the rest of the site is justified, IMO. The for sale boards were created as a service for regular mumsnetters after all, I don't think they were set up in order for people to use them without using the rest of the talk areas.

My vote goes to either restricting who can use them or moving them to a separate area of the site, FWIW.

charlieandlola · 22/01/2008 19:13

Please get rid of the Buying and Sellling MNHQ. You are being taken for a ride. Aitch was treated appallingly today The Hunnisxxxxx and Picturetrailersxxxxxx are a hideous parasitic bunch and must go, or make them pay put a credit card online and pay £1 per bump!

SorenLorensen · 22/01/2008 19:21

I have Buying and Selling (and For Free and Swap Shop - or whatever the other topics are) on my "ignore list". Does MN actually 'gain' anything from having the Buying and Selling threads - because, honestly, I think so many people on there are abusing the whole idea of Mumsnet and simply using it as a free alternative to ebay.

I wouldn't use it to buy or sell - I had a once bitten, twice shy experience when I offered an almost new piece of baby equipment 'free to a good home' - which was pounced on immediately by someone whose name I didn't recognise and when I searched her nickname on ebay she was clearly a buyer/seller of second hand baby goods. I asked if she wanted it for her child and got a load of abuse. I know I was just giving it away - but it's the principle of the thing. Anyway, I didn't give it to her - I gave it to the next person to ask (who just happened to be a regular Mumsnetter). So call me cliquey

Aitch · 22/01/2008 19:52

gosh, i've just read that thread in its entirety, it was pretty shocking wasn't it? they are barking. and yes, mrsbadger, i was a bit shaken actually but am fine now, thanks.

Aitch · 22/01/2008 20:00

funnily enough, sorenlorenson, i've only every had very good experiences buying stuff on MN but then i've been selective about who i've got stuff from. i've had a buggy, a swim vest and some nappies and it's been fine. but no-one's ever called me hunni until today, let's just say. i think that's why i really think something has to be done. a lot of these picturetrails are the same ones on bounty or babycentre, i can't remember which.

remember with the buggy that was being sold as second-hand and had in fact been owned by about fifteen mners? i think that the woman just sold it on b'centre. an mner went to warn them and they saw her off as if she was the enemy. it's another culture almost, one of continuous consumption, i'd worry about some of them if i cared enough.

that said, it's all ad revenue for MN at the end of the day. what about an MN marketplace available from the home page and a restricted swaps/passing on service for regs (as i believe we're called...)? and then if people have something to sell they can do so through the marketplace but via a thread on the service board on here?

BreeVanDerCampLGJ · 22/01/2008 20:06

Some of them are fences, some are just as thick as two short planks, and some of them are o.k.

Sadly, the OK are outnumbered overrun by the low life ill educated chavs.

I saw Angryregular's post. I don't recall it being anything offensive.

Imo MNHQ have really been dragging their feet on this issue.

Oblomov · 22/01/2008 20:32

I can't bear the for sale threads. It used to be so nice. Now its a nightmare.

Are MNHQ planning anything ?
