Dear MN Towers, could we consider moving the Buying and selling listings to a separate board?

FA good point. Even if it was 500 posts just in For Sale, you could see that they were regulars, as it were, and not some arsehole trying to scam someone

controlfreakyhunnibabe · 17/01/2008 17:31

pragmatic i grant you..... but uncharacteristically feeble cod

so what topics DO you choose to see, COD?

controlfreakyhunnibabe · 17/01/2008 17:35

you'll have only yourself to blame when you log in one day and find site has changed to "bootifulbabybundleanyonehun.com". stand up and be counted coddy.

I think the difference is now people are selling big items for lots of cash (ie phones, prams etc) for £50. Hence when people get scammed or items go missing, large sums of money are lost. Because of this everyone is very wary (& rightly so) and accusations & mud slinging are rife.

Long ago (in a galaxy far far away) people used to use the For Sale boards to sell bits & bobs for £1, 50p etc so that if something did get lost in the post or someone didn't pay, you put it down to experience & shrugged your shoulders.

Now, there seems to be a lot more posters on there who just use For Sale & don't post anywhere else. I noticed it recently when I tried to sell a book (basically for P&P) & within an hour, it had 60+ threads above it caused by people starting multiple threads for the same pic trail, listing individual items on separate threads or bumping threads every 15 mins. That's what I get miffed about, regular MNetters trying to sell what once would be bought by someone fairly quickly, seem to have been usurped by people who just use the site for selling - sometimes using pic trails with loads & loads of items on or buying & selling prams like a used car lot.

I will climb off my soapbox now

Flier · 17/01/2008 17:44

okay, how about the facility to "ignore" posts by specific mnetters?

That way, if someone specific offends you (hun) or you realise they only post on the forsale boards, you can ignore.

137wallis · 17/01/2008 17:45

thanks controlfreaky, (I really want to call you hun but might be stoned!) its true that lots of people only post on these threads, but if for sale was banned, then they might all come and start talking on other threads you can't choose not to see! as I said before they can be a real oppertunity for less well off mums, but don't think its mumsnets responceability to police them, if you don't trust someone then don't buy, I only blamed myself and the scammer when I was had! and any form of payment means that people that really need the money may not beable to use it, thats why I don't sell on ebay as fees cost too much

Flier · 17/01/2008 17:46

yeah, good point FA

I agree that if people want to use the sale boards they should pay the CAT facility fee.
In addition to this I think that everyone who uses them should also have a profile and on that profile there should be a "number of posts" shown.

This of course would also show how long the mumsnetter had been a member.

Perhaps a facility to make a comment on people's profiles could be added too, for people who have bought or sold to, to recommend etc.

137wallis · 17/01/2008 17:48

and I have brought nappies and a pram on here, as could never have afforded to from anywhere else

FlllightAttendant · 17/01/2008 17:49

Sorry Flier, please don't be pissed off with me, I didn't have time to read the whole thing properly so I just suggested what was on my mind. Did you think I was deliberately trying to take credit for your suggestion?

I'm not like that.

VictorianSqualor · 17/01/2008 17:50

Should only be allowed to sell a certain amount of items a year.

Then each of us would have our allocation and could actually use the board for what it's meant for.

MamaVonG · 17/01/2008 17:50

Flier don't get he hump, I couldn't be arsed to read the whole thread

And namechangers need not apply.

Also can we make it so their names have to be something really different rather than all being called mummy2.................... that way they won't all merge in to one.

VictorianSqualor · 17/01/2008 17:52

Because cod, some normal posters actually want to be able to use the board without being drowned in huns.
