Dear MN Towers, could we consider moving the Buying and selling listings to a separate board?

Well.....could we?

OP posts:
twospecialgirls · 17/01/2008 19:24

im a little confused by this the buy and sell board is the only one i use and i dont think that i should feel bad for that ! and as for wholesale selling that doesnt happed much i go on and sell my dd used clothes to buy more or just bits and bobs from around the house i dont understant the issue there are a few scammer so we just need to be aware but for the majority the people on there are regulars and a lot have become very good friends i think banning it would be very unfair

NineUnlikelyTales · 17/01/2008 19:26

If MNHQ made it so that For Sale listings could not be replied to, eg they were one post only, and interested purchasers had to CAT the OP, then there would be none of this tedious bumping and sellers would have to cough up for CAT facility too.

NineUnlikelyTales · 17/01/2008 19:27

People who committed multiple listings of the same item could be banned/decapitated.

FarcicalAlienQueen · 17/01/2008 19:29

twospecialgirls - why don't you use any of the other boards?

Do you use the buy and sell because it's free??

twospecialgirls · 17/01/2008 19:31

i think that you shuld maybe be able top have one thread each that you can add new things to if need be that way they would not ahve to be bumped i myself put one thread on bump it for a couple of days and then sell the stuff on ebay i dont mind paying fees i just put them on here first cheaper than i would get on ebay to see if anyone wants them no harm done or ripping off intended

twospecialgirls · 17/01/2008 19:35

no i am happy to list on ebay and pay fees acctually and im not one that cries poverty thanks
and i dont use the other boards as i scan them and have never really found one relevant to me i have posted a couple of times but dont have time to sit on the comp chatting and when you are new it can be a little overwhelming if your not great with comps as im not !!
i dont think i should feel bad for not posting tbh

Whizzz · 17/01/2008 19:38

this sort of post is what annoys me. Look at the amount of stuff still on cards from shops. How can one person have so many unused similar items ???

FarcicalAlienQueen · 17/01/2008 19:42

For starters - I didn't say you cried poverty.

so if you only come here to sell - obviously (to me) the motive is to make money - why not just ebay it in the first place???

Or is it that you list it (for free of course) here on MN - at a lower price. If it doesn't sell - you put it on ebay for a higher price - but one that will cover your "ebay" costs - therefore leaving you with the same amount of money than if you'd successfully sold it (for no fees) here???

Aitch · 17/01/2008 19:42

franny the reason there are so few being bumped at the moment is because their attention is elsewhere, usually about 50% of the threads in active convos are sales threads. and it would have affected me, as i already explained, as a newbie because it gives a false impression that MN is as much an unregulated ebay as it is a site for parents to chat. but get it out of active convos, or site it elsewhere, and there's no problem. people wanting to operate as traders will have their marketplace, and unfortunately people like me who liked to pick things up occasionally (or qoq or skg who liked to sell) will lose out.

BreeVanDerCampLGJ · 17/01/2008 19:44

Probably stolen Whizz.

Whizzz · 17/01/2008 19:45

I had to ask

Aitch · 17/01/2008 19:45

oooh, NineUnlikelyTales, that's a great idea. that would solve the bumping into active convos, allow for one sales chat thread and make the sellers and buyers pay cat fees so MN would profit. i think that would work really well.

Aitch · 17/01/2008 19:46

mind you, i suppose MN needs the traffic... does a CAT count as traffic? doubt it.

Aitch · 17/01/2008 19:47

wow, that does read like a shoplifter's stash, doesn't it whizz?

VictorianSqualor · 17/01/2008 19:48

twospecialgirls, one thread a dau is still quite a lot, would it not be reasonable to say

A)sellers must have a confirmed number of posts (people already selling would already have those, would just stop newcomers scamming).

B) One thread a week, then you could work out what you wanted to sell and put it all up weekly, I can't see how a few days would really make much difference to each person, just to the board as a whole.

and

C) No continuos bumping, if people are looking for sales they can go to the sale board rather than active convos/last 15 minutes etc

D) If they want to CHAT they post in CHAT, if you want it to be a thread everyone doesn't post on why not create a 'club'? Like the teashop/sanctuary/bar/scuttlebuggers etc they are happy to have new people but mostly it's the same posters, you could always have one of your own.

???

I can't see that being a problem for sellers or non-sellers.

Just means everyone gets a fair go at the for sale board and less peopel come along, create an account and never post except on sales.

twospecialgirls · 17/01/2008 19:48

no not at all !! do you raelly think that everyone is a scammer i just sold something on here for £2 that if id have put on ebay i would have made a lot more its not even about the money you make friends also if i wanted to make money i would list everything on ebay straight away as i could make a lot more
and i dont care if people are selling stuff to make money good for them why shouldnt they if they need a few extra quid if people want to buy they will if they dont they wont
and i have been a member about 6 months and i have only had about 2-3 sale threads hardly gonna be a millionare am i !!

and just so you know i was someone in another thread who suggested that we DO pay a fee as that may get rid of scammers

you seem to come across quite aggressive and i think you are being unfair you dont even know me

twospecialgirls · 17/01/2008 19:51

victorian - i didnt mean one a day i ment one each and that would be it like your own little section ( im not good with comps so it may not be possible ) i just ment it would save there being stacks of threads by the same person clogging it up !! iykwim

VictorianSqualor · 17/01/2008 19:51

Oh, and all of those except the number posts could be done without MNHQ getting involved, those of you who sell regularly could just point it out to newbies that there is a system to allow fairness and deal with it yourselves.

Surely the fact that maybe less peopel would hide the for sale threads would also bump up the amount of people that actually saw your threads too???

I know I for one would read them more if it was managed in such a way.

LIZS · 17/01/2008 19:51

Well occasionally posters like that, large volume and/or selling on new stuff, get banned from the boards , but not for long it seems. Picture trails are annoying, hides all sorts of non child/parenting related cr&p. Even if it was the one post then CAT system they could still get around that by posting a link to picturetrail with the email address on. Basically what started as a service has gone comemrcial and it doesn't sit well with the majority of regular posters.

As an aside I've idly wondered about BNWT items. It can't be that hard to get hold of a ticket gun so theoretcially one could wear/use and retag ?

sparklygothkat · 17/01/2008 19:52

we need to get this sorted. Its unfair on the regular posters, and its unfair on the people that are scammed. I have brought a lot from mnetters (possibly even from the huns) such as nappies, crib, pushchair, clothes, breastfeeding cushion, and not had a problem, but it seems a shame that its in jeopardy.

VictorianSqualor · 17/01/2008 19:53

I understand twospecialgirls, like an alteration to the original post so you could show what had been sold and what had been added.

I think that the sellers could easily stop it being the way it is, and it would show that they werent just here to make profit if they were to come up with similar guidelines to what I suggested themselves.

BreeVanDerCampLGJ · 17/01/2008 19:54

Aitch

I posted the same on the other thread.

She is now going proper bonkers...and SHOUTING at me.

Has yet to call me a hun though.

FarcicalAlienQueen · 17/01/2008 19:55

perhaps that's because when people openly admit to ONLY using MN to sell it does rather seem like a bit of a p*ss take - free advertising, no fees to pay,

you'd find you made more friends if you didn't just take advantage of not having to pay anything to sell your stuff.

MillieMooMoo · 17/01/2008 19:55

I havent read this whole thread but I agree to pay the CAT subscription is a good idea and it would be ideal if there was a way of having a feedback score next to our usernames like ebay

Could a buyer/seller somehow leave feedback on a username and it clock up somehow?

tbh, I dont have time to read through the trusted buyers/sellers post and never have

twospecialgirls · 17/01/2008 19:55

yeah thats what i mean you have worded it better than me yeah just alter the origional post i go on another site and on their for sale be you cant have more than so many threads and you cant bump it all the time either but thats moderated but it works well everone gets to know each other well and there is never any scamming and you have to make a certain amount of posts before you can sell anything either
