Dear MN Towers, could we consider moving the Buying and selling listings to a separate board?

it used to be on a separate board, when I joined many moons ago..

gigglewitch · 16/01/2008 23:29

it is such a fantastic idea, y'see Oh Great Mumsnet Tower People. then talk people and buy/sell people will stop getting p1ssed off with each other

Hi all

Justine posted on t'other thread about this - Any thoughts?

By JustineMumsnet on Thu 17-Jan-08 09:55:10

We do have a plan to rehouse classifieds at some point but it's not going to be for a few months because Tech has only 10 fingers and anyway he's b*ing off to the States shortly...

In the meantime it's been suggested that we don't let people start for sale/wanted threads unless they take out a CAT sub. That might put off some of the "less-committed" Mumsnetters, plus it will stop folks posting their emails all over the boards and may even bring in a bit of cash. How does that idea sound as a temporary measure?

Twiglett · 17/01/2008 14:13

Think you should charge them a higher rate than Cating tbh ... an annual subscription

You could consider giving a discount to those who are capable of typing a complete sentence without resorting to text speak.

And a further discount should they give up the word 'hun'

Just as a thought.

Fimbo · 17/01/2008 14:13

I don't think anybody new registering should be allowed to sell anything, as too many are being ripped off.

Cat sub good.

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 17/01/2008 14:14

Considering the amounts that the thieves seem to be getting I'm not sure a fiver or so would put them off.

ChristmasShinySnowflakes · 17/01/2008 16:06

CAT subs better than nothing I suppose- for now at least; but personally I think we should suspend all buying and selling until the listings can be 'rehoused' so to speak.

Twig you made me laugh so much I spat coffee over laptop!

Can't we have a separate

"regular MN posters who just want to sell a few bits and pieces" board......you know - people who actually venture outside of the world of huns and xxxxxx's (and buying and selling amongst themselves ).....ie me

and then a separate one for everyone that only wants to use MN for free advertising and to make money

LIZS · 17/01/2008 16:11

lol Twig. A fiver in the scheme of things - bearing in mind some huns sell huge volumes and high price items - is but a drop but better than nowt. btw does MNHQ monitor who is doing what over there , name changing et al ?

when you log out and look at active convos, there is so many for sale threads i think it would seriously put alot off joining.

ZTT · 17/01/2008 16:15

yeah i was surprised when i logged on at college and saw how many there were...so although i don't care..from the wider perspective it probably is rubbish to have them dominate to the uninitiated

FarcicalAlienQueen · 17/01/2008 16:15

not to mention how many of them are telling us about their Ebay auctions

BumperliciousIsOneHotMother · 17/01/2008 16:16

What difference would a separate board make?

bogie · 17/01/2008 16:18

FarcicalAlienQueen i agree i sell a few bits and bobs maybe once every couple of months but its getting daft you cant see the normal posts on active convos for all the bloody for sale threads

FarcicalAlienQueen · 17/01/2008 16:22

I've given up trying to sell any of my stuff on there now - can't afford to list it on ebay - as I don't like asking people to wait until I have the money in my bank account - and don't have the cash for postage without them having paid me.........whereas on MN I (think) that most people would understand and be prepared to wait a few days.....so I'm sat here with loads of sodding kids/baby stuff I don't want - want to make a few £ out of but no way of doing it LOL.

ChristmasShinySnowflakes · 17/01/2008 16:25

All the "Please look, I need to raise £10 in paypal" threads are just blatantly begging.

It's all just very 'in yer face' IMO

OP posts:
BumperliciousIsOneHotMother · 17/01/2008 16:27

FAQ I don' think it is unreasonable to ask people to wait until payment has cleared on ebay.

FarcicalAlienQueen · 17/01/2008 16:27

I know it's been suggested before (I think - though perhaps with regards to trustworthisness not the current issue), and was thought not to be a good idea.

But think there should be a "minimum posts" requirement before you can use the For Sale/Wanted boards (I've seen a lot of people using the "Wanted" boards to sell stuff ie "I want you to buy xxx"). Something like 50-100 - so it's not just people joining up to get free advertising for their stuff - but people who use the boards and want to get rid of stuff on the side.

And a limit on the number of threads you can have in the "for sale" section at any one time may cut down the number of threads that pop up in Active convo's as a large number of people seem to have multiple threads....

LIZS · 17/01/2008 16:28

I've customised to eliminate them for Active conversations as it got so annoying but they still show on Last Hour. Occasionally I'll look at the board itself but there are pages of new/bumped threads each day often for the same items that it is incredibly har dot read and find what you might actually be interested in. Could there be a maximum number of threads that any one poster could start/post on in that section at any one time or per CAT payment, to avoid spamming , time wasting, repeat selling etc.

FarcicalAlienQueen · 17/01/2008 16:28

Bumper - I know I have done it in the past - but I always say in the listing that I'll need to wait for the money to come out of my Paypal and arrive in my bank account (so they know there'll be a delay between paying and postage) - but I'm sure it puts a lot of people off.
