The site is getting gradually less and less useable...

I actually mind the new site when it was first launched. It was a bit different but I thought people were making an unnecessary fuss and that they, and I, would get used to it.

It's just getting less and less useable now though. First there were the minor frustrations, like the search function not working any more. Then there was the thing where the site kept logging me out all the time, despite having the box ticked to keep me logged in. Sometimes it would force me out at the end of writing a long post, so I would lose everything I had written. That issue seems to have subsided now, but instead, the site just keeps crashing. Constantly. Either I'm stuck with a blank white screen when I try to scroll past the ads, or the page just freezes without warning and stops responding. It definitely isn't my phone or my browser (default one on android) - I can use other sites without any difficulty.

I love MN but the endless string of problems is now getting me to the point where I just don't feel that it's worth the level of frustration that I feel when I'm trying to use the site. I don't enjoy it much now because of the endless issues.

MNHQ, is there really nothing you can do to get the site functioning properly again, like it used to do? I will have to find something else to do if not, because it just isn't worth the effort at the moment!

I have been back on and off since last update but have dramatically reduced how much I am on here. It says I have say, 90 threads I'm watching but I can only see to access a fraction of them so I'm unable to access older ones I've saved for information I'vefound useful nor have a clean out. It now orders them in order of how recently updated as opposed to when I added them to my watch list which I understand could be handy but it often is just a person checking in if op is ok and not an actual update.

Also, whilst being able to see a reply to something with a copy of the post they are replying to in it is useful, I'm not a fan of miles and miles of scrolling when some threads become post after post of replies with quotes of replies of replies etc....(hope that makes sense).

The search missing or unusable for me is the real bug bear. I like to help people about certain topics but I can't find those via a keyword search any more.

  1. Slider useless I used to be able to search for all new chats with x word in them, but now the slider for the date is just unuseable on iOS as you can't get it to do anything like last week, best I seem to do is last year and I really don't want that. I search by a user and the slider picks some random end date in 2017 and I can't get to find any more recent ones
  2. I can't even find search in Chrome except for a general one that searches whole of mumsnet
  3. I type a word like Petts Wood and it comes up with some results but then I apply the slider and some of the recent results disappear. Just doesn't make sense.
  4. I can remember threads I was on but they don't necessarily come up in the search but I can't find them now as the search doesn't seem to work

This is the biggest issue for me too. Search is absolutely unusable, there's no way to refine it. I tried searching for references to the book "Mist Over Pendle" at the weekend; using quotes did nothing to refine the search and the results was a list of posts which included the word "peddle". I ended up going into Google and searching "Mist Over Pendle" Mumsnet instead.

It's really embarrassingly bad.

I posted about this just this morning. Very frustrating and stops me posting on a lot of threads…anything more than 3 or 4 sentences and the page ‘refreshes’ and I lose the lot…🙄

This happens to me too, and it’s hugely annoying to put effort into a reply and see it disappear before I can post it.
after it refreshes I’m back to the top instead of where I was.
ipad, browser, Safari.
I hate the “strong cuppa” error message too, find it patronising and not funny.
the ocean of white is hard on the eyes.

It's interesting mnhq say they care about feedback when 2 threads I'm on in site stuff (blank spaces and threads I'm on issues) they haven't even replied to in ages and no changes have been made.

Also find I'm using the site less and less lately. Not even intentionally, I just can't be bothered as I find the new site frustrating and clunky. Surprising as I don't like change but I was pretty sure I'd get used to it like previous changes. Definitely not this time it seems!

I agree. It’s not about “getting used to it” like a new layout - the site just doesn’t work properly.

StageRage · 24/05/2022 10:53

I too find the new search pages utterly useless compared to how it used to be.

I am not doing any more 'serious' posts on my phone, sick of wasting time on thoughtful / factual stuff just to have it disappear in one of the constant page refreshes before I can hit 'post'.

EmmaH2022 · 24/05/2022 11:01

I don't know where "search" is on the new site. I thought perhaps that was intentional.

Really don't understand why most people are using MN on a browser when there's an app

Because I only have a desktop Mac, for starters. I don't have a phone or an ipad.

likewise. i only have a chromebook. no apps.
and it has never been a problem til this new improved MN.

Emma, the Search page exists but there is no link to it on the desktop version of the site. I can't even really tell if MN is aware of this, although it's been discussed on multiple threads. To get to it, go to www.mumsnet.com/search

KatyMumsnet · 24/05/2022 14:51

Hi @Mumwantingtogetitright sorry you're having so many issues with the website, we're trying to iron things out as quickly as possible.

We think the issue with the white screens might be due to an issue with the memory on your device, like this known issue on Apple devices -
https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT204229

Could you try turning your phone off and on again to see if that solves the problem? If not then please come back to us and we will continue to look into it.

Are the unresponsive errors happening often enough that we would see them if we set up a screen share with you? It's hard to track these issues down because they are intermittent but if we can see them happening we can find out what's happening more easily.

Topazpearlagain · 24/05/2022 14:52

I am having the same problems as OP with constant crashes and the same wait or close message, also the white screen when I try to scroll.

I am a bit surprised that @KatyMumsnet gave a long response which ignored the OP's stated problems!

KatyMumsnet · 24/05/2022 14:52

@Cherryana there are instructions on this page on how to fix the cookie notice issue - https://www.mumsnet.com/articles/talk-updates

KatyMumsnet · 24/05/2022 14:54

@Topazpearlagain apologies for missing that in my response - I'm trying to cover a lot of ground! 😅I've just posted a reply that might help with the issues you're experiencing too.

KatyMumsnet · 24/05/2022 14:56

@tribpot if you press enter or click the search icon on the search bar on the desktop header then it'll take you to the main search. The drop-down box that opens when you enter a search term is just a preview showing the top results. We're about to release a change that makes that clearer.

KatyMumsnet · 24/05/2022 15:11

@Sswhinesthebest @ItsTheTreasure we're currently working on an update to threads I'm on that will show you when there are updates.

@ItsTheTreasure we're getting a lot of messages so it's hard to keep up with all of them but we are reading the feedback and taking it on board even if we're not able to reply to every message.

Tara336 · 24/05/2022 15:16

I cant use the site if I'm on my ipad anymore as the pages come up with error loading everytime I scroll.down. I can only use my phone (android) to view, hence I rarely bother with Mumsnet now as its too frustrating

Thanks @KatyMumsnet . I've tried switching my device off and on again, and I'll let you know whether that makes any difference.

It's hard to say how often the problem occurs - sometimes there are long stretches where it seems to be OK and sometimes it happens every five minutes or so.

I'm actually somewhat reassured by the fact that @Topazpearlagain is having the same issues, was starting to feel like I was the only one!

Yep, me too.

plus the huge shite screen thing.

I've been riding the wave of they'll get it fixed & we'll get used to it, but I'm running out of the energy to be zen about it!!

the STUPID non capitalisation at the beginning of paragraphs is driving me up the pole as well.

like many others, I've been here since dinosaurs roamed, but I'm currently looking at jobs I should be getting on with & they're looking more appealing...

it's a concern!!

ATadConfused · 24/05/2022 15:34

That did say WHITE, not shite!!!

ItsTheTreasure · 24/05/2022 16:23

@KatyMumsnet I appreciate you are getting a lot of messages and I'm sure it's hard to get through them all but the thread regarding 5 blank rows at the top of the screen was posted on the 29th April. And the threads I'm on issue was asking if it was possible to add the option to remove threads as it isn't needed (in most cases) to have 100s of threads going back years listed

KatyMumsnet · 24/05/2022 16:58

@Tara336 is it possible to set up a screen share with you so we can see the problem happening on your iPad in real-time? It'll potentially help us find out what the problem is. I appreciate this isn't always possible for everyone though so feel free to say no.

@ItsTheTreasure we are adding a remove option to the threads I'm on list too but it's not a quick fix so bear with us on that. In regards to the blank rows at the top of the screen - we did actually have a problem with some of the rows appearing blank intermittently and we fixed that a while ago which is why we haven't given any updates on that in a while. Are you running an ad blocker or have you rejected cookies? That can cause those threads to fail to pull through.

I tried switching my device off and on again. Maybe managed for around half an hour without any crashes.

I then did what it said in the link with regard to clearing website data. Again, it was OK for a little while but then crashed again.

As I said above, I use the same browser to access other websites, and this has only ever happened on MN, and only since you moved over to the new site.

Screen shots from 2 threads just now. Start or the white screen of death (this thread) and the unresponsive notice. Still using samsuns S21 on the default browser as previous thread. Phone has been off and on again (reminiscent of the IT Crowd).

I type out responses in the notes app on my phone and then paste them into the browser.

But really MN HQ, that message which comes up when the server crashes about having a strong cuppa is the biggest load of sexist shite which has presumably either been written by a man to make it look like you have an office full of women “nattering” and giggling over the site, or it’s been written by a woman who needs to get back into this century. Please don’t patronise your users like this.

And please fire whoever it was you hired to build this site. 3 years it apparently took. They must be laughing all the way to the bank.

I'm beginning to think it was someone's GCSE project.

MunsteadWood · 27/05/2022 07:34

Agreed. I use the app and have been getting loads of problems with it. In particular replies not posting / error messages. I've reported this several times to MNHQ but had zero response.

MunsteadWood · 27/05/2022 07:35

(That said - that one worked! I'd just uninstalled and reinstalled the app so perhaps that's fixed whatever "bug" was causing it...)
