It's about time you gave us a new update, MNHQ

The new platform is really not working well - you only have to look at the list of complaints on Site Stuff

... many (most?) of which are not being addressed by MNHQ.

Come on! It's been some time now since you launched the new platform, and while a smooth transition is probably too much to expect, very little seems to be improving since the launch.

WTAF is going on? When can we expect all the things you're promising to actually happen?

Hi @EarringsandLipstick Sorry that this is frustrating - as I said above, it's the same team trying to work out what's causing the problems and then giving the information to tech so they can fix them as it is doing their best to post updates. It's also not straightforward to post updates as it's sometimes quite tricky to know what's causing the problem and not always clear when they can/will be fixed by. That said, we can do better in keeping the Known Issues page as up-to-date as possible - some of the issues just take a little while to track down and fix. Will think about how we can do it better - thanks for feedback.

Sue so far today I have posted on 4 separate threads to let posters know of the app solution. People are still posting about quote problems / paragraphs not working and they have no way of knowing about the app update.

It's terrible, terrible communication. There should be a much clearer way to get help with issues and find solutions.

It seems so amateur - surely MN is a business?

EarringsandLipstick · 17/05/2022 07:16

And again, please can we have automatic holding of tags back again? I've mentioned this repeatedly & it's never been replied to.

Halsall · 17/05/2022 08:39

the issue on bookmarks - I think these are currently only not working when. you refresh a page - that's because the URL you are refreshing holds the info about where your original bookmark was - so when you refresh you're telling the browser to go back to that post even when you've bookmarked later on. If you go out of the thread and back in via a link in "Threads I'm on" or "Threads I'm watching" it will find your new bookmark - it's just refresh that won't

@SueMumsnet I'm sorry but this is just hopeless.

I’ve been posting on the other thread about this and the problem isn’t that it goes back to a previous bookmark - it goes back to a random point where there wasn’t even a bookmark at all, but where I might have just happened to open the thread at some previous point. There’s no rhyme or reason as to where it decides to open. But from that moment, it repeatedly reverts to that point.

In a long and fast-moving thread which I’m following throughout the day this is agony. I keep a tab open and come back to it. I really don’t think it’s asking a lot to expect to be able to bookmark my place, come back half an hour later, and be able to refresh to find my bookmark - as I used to be able to do in the good old days when MN actually worked.

Halsall · 17/05/2022 08:40

PS I’m on an iPad, using Safari, latest IOS, and the browser, not the app.

SueMumsnet · 17/05/2022 09:36

AbsolutelyLoveIy · 17/05/2022 00:07

You’re one of the biggest forums and your tech is completely inadequate

It stinks of being done on the cheap by a bunch of clueless interns probably winging it

Why dont you pay for decent tech? Everybody else manages it!

Hi @AbsolutelyLoveIy - I know this is hugely frustrating but I'm really not sure that's fair. I think it's important to note that this was a really complex project. 22 years of a legacy site means that there are so many complicated issues and edge cases that need to be thought about when you're re-platforming. We caught many of the biggest issues that could have gone wrong, and were left with quite a few smaller ones. The site, on the whole, works well - there are tens of thousands of posts and millions of visits every day. There are still issues to solve and I know how annoying they are if you use the site often - but we're working through them (and if you look at the Known Issues page you can see how many we've fixed already). Thank you for your patience on this.

SueMumsnet · 17/05/2022 09:39

@DragonwithoutaDungeon I'm trying to solve the Firefox/PMs issue. I have just downloaded Firefox and can see my PMs fine, which is really annoying.

Is there any chance you could post some screenshots of what you're seeing?

Also - can you let me know what version of Firefox it is that you're using - I'm on 100.0.1. You can get this if you click on "About Firefox" in the navigation bar at the top. Also, is it a PC or a Mac that you're using?

Sorry for questions, but any answers you can give are hugely helpful in enabling us to track down the issue.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 17/05/2022 10:28

Hi Mumsnet. You don't seem to have commented on the ghost pm notifications. Also, for the love of Pete, will someone stop the dialogue boxes asking me if I am happy with my financial products.... I'm a grown up. If I want extra financial products, or I'm not happy, I put on my big-girl pants and go to the bank! Other options are available. Hmm

ValerieCupcake · 17/05/2022 10:30

Why are there a load of empty bars at the top of the menu? It looks like things haven't loaded up properly or that there are messages missing.

Hi @SpongeBobJudgeyPants good spot on that miss - what device and browser are you using when you get the ghost pm notifications? And is it on the app or site? Thank you for your help, much appreciated.

LegsOfJelly · 17/05/2022 10:39

Ooh, good thread. While we're at it:

  • I keep being logged out, despite "keep me logged in" being ticked. It's really annoying.
  • agree with all the comments above on bookmarks. It's hard to find bookmarked posts.

I'm on a Samsung Mobile. Haven't got the app.

Oblomov22 · 17/05/2022 10:56

There's is an update.
Has worked for me.

Can now do paragraphs.

drinkingwineoutofamug · 17/05/2022 10:57

Why when I read a quote posted on a thread do I miss the end of the sentence? I have to then theorise what the poster is replying 🤔

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 17/05/2022 11:23

The above issues (posts cutting off, paragraphs etc) are still a problem for me and in addition I'm still getting bizarre adverts and can't filter posts by user as I'm not a MN premium user apparently - except I am! This is really annoying especially on long threads where you want to refer to a particular post!

I've updated, logged out, cleared cookies, everything! I have emailed three times and been told "bear with us".

I've been on MN for about 16 years and am used to updates being glitchy, I have supported the changes to Premium etc but this situation is ridiculous. If it wasn't for the Allison Bailey threads atm I just wouldn't be using it and would cancel my Premium/membership.

It's a shame that this is driving so many women away, especially given Justine's stance of allowing more freedom of speech in FWR than other forums.

drinkingwineoutofamug · 17/05/2022 11:37

Seen on other thread , regarding missing words in quotes etc
If Apple go to App Store and you can update .
Problem then hopefully solved

Hi @WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles sorry you're having these issues - I'm going to PM you to see if we can get them sorted.

BoreOfWhabylon · 17/05/2022 12:04

Hi @SueMumsnet have you had a chance to check out the bolding issue I posted about earlier please?

Hi @SueMumsnet have you had a chance to check out the bolding issue I posted about earlier please?

On it now! Thanks for reporting

EarringsandLipstick · 17/05/2022 12:55

We caught many of the biggest issues that could have gone wrong, and were left with quite a few smaller ones.

I'm in disbelief you can type this much less believe it.

The problems weren't small. For many many users, they have rendered the site unusable.

It's the users that give MN their product. And you show utter disregard for their experiences.

It is literally no excuse to say it's a 22 year old platform. I have worked on a big migration project for a platform in my organisation recently. Things went wrong. But we managed them & communicated properly. If the migration had gone as spectacularly wrong as this one, we would have reverted to the previous version while addressing the issues.

EarringsandLipstick · 17/05/2022 12:57

The site, on the whole, works well - there are tens of thousands of posts and millions of visits every day.

But it doesn't.

You've repeatedly been advised that, for many, it's unusable. Whether that's the app, mobile browser or desktop version.

Yes people post. And visit. It doesn't equate to it working well! Many of us see MN as a type of community so we persist in visiting, reading posts & commenting. I've been doing so a lot less tho.

The attitude of those working here is both unprofessional and dismissive.

cleareyesfulhearts · 17/05/2022 13:02

@EarringsandLipstick I agree. The posts from staff members are so dismissive to the point of making you feel a bit like they are trying to gaslight you into thinking that's not what's happened TO YOU!

Patronising too - many of us have real world and extensive experience of this type of thing and we get treated like fools.

It's gone on for sooooooo long now too.

SueMumsnet · 17/05/2022 13:10

cleareyesfulhearts · 17/05/2022 13:02

Hi @cleareyesfulhearts there's really no gaslighting going on. We're reading every single post and trying to sort all of the issues affecting all users. Some are trickier than others to fix - there's so many different browsers and devices and configurations and it's really hard when we can't replicate it. I'm sorry if you feel posts have been dismissive - they're really not meant to be.

The point I made about the site working well is the case for most users. It doesn't mean that we're not taking every one saying otherwise seriously.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 17/05/2022 13:13

In fairness to MNHQ, the Apple update on the MN app has resolved the paragraph/quote issue for me which was a big pain in the arse, so that's good!

SueMumsnet · 17/05/2022 13:19

BoreOfWhabylon · 17/05/2022 12:04

Hi @SueMumsnet have you had a chance to check out the bolding issue I posted about earlier please?

Hi @BoreOfWhabylon the thread is fixed now - the tech team are struggling to work out why it happens (it happens v intermittently) so would be really useful if next time it happens we could speak to the poster who did the post that knocked the thread off course...to try and work out what is causing it. Would be really helpful if anyone was willing to do this....thank you!

EarringsandLipstick · 17/05/2022 13:53

The point I made about the site working well is the case for most users. It doesn't mean that we're not taking every one saying otherwise seriously.

But that's completely untrue @SueMumsnet

The list of issues is so extensive it cannot equate to a positive user experience for most users.

Some issues get fixed, only to happen again.

The communication is dire.

You are basing your point on there still being lots of traffic to the site. I explained why this might be. However, a combination of the poor performance of the site & MN staff awful communication is likely to change this.

User after user familiar with implementing new platforms have told you they would never approach it like this. And still you maintain you are doing a good job? You really aren't. I would have some respect if you were honest about this.

EarringsandLipstick · 17/05/2022 13:55

It did. And I'm delighted.

Nearly a week later.

And their only way of communicating on it was to reply to some of the threads posted about it. No proper central communications.

There's a long thread of the Known Issues which was where we were supposed to post. People were doing so but until yesterday, MNHQ had just stopped responding.

It's just so unprofessional.
