Can we please have a MN Classic option for those who can't cope with the changes?

Would it be so difficult to have a MN Classic option - which we have always had, and which some of us have been using since the original format change - for posters who find the changing format difficult? There are many posters with neurodiversity, for example, who will probably stop posting here because it all abruptly looks and feels wrong Sad

OP posts:

Honestly it's great. I love the change - the old MN was a bit Windows 98

All you moaners, do you never upgrade your phones' Operating System? Are you still on your iPhone 5? Bet you aren't 😆

No one is going to mind if you stay or go 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

steppemum · 20/04/2022 16:30

I've been into settings. I have the colour highlights for mine and OPs posts. But the colours are way too pale. The dark lavender is pale purple. The forestgreen/olive etc and just a colour hint. they simply don't show up enough.

You cannot change font size, or ask it to show 'see all' instead of having to click to find it. etc

I'm happy to change. But change to something more clunky, that shows less information on a screen which doesn't colour differentiate and is too full of glare?
Why is that an improvement?
Also, many of us do NOT update phones that often. Ha ha ha iphone 5.

Actually I have an old samsung 5.
As I don't do emails etc on it, I do all that on my (ancient) laptop, it is sufficient.
Not everyone throws money after tech just for the sake of it.

Clarice99 · 20/04/2022 16:34

Another ND poster who cannot cope very well with change and this format is absolutely horrendous!

I'm a speed reader and the huge gaps/expanse of white between posts is dreadful. I thought I was on the wrong forum earlier and logged off and on about 3 times before it dawned on me that this is the 'new MN'.

It's awful 😡

SoMuchToBits · 20/04/2022 16:40

I don't like most of the changes either. I have been into settings (via the My Mumsnet button) and have selected the colours I want and to see all messages in the thread and to see most recent post first. All fine.

Except the OP still shows up at the top of the page, so when I have started from the bottom and scrolled up, it looks as if there's a new post from the OP when it's the original post.

Also, as someone else said I can no longer find the Advanced search button, which was a feature I used a lot!

The only improvement for me is that when you see 50 threads in Active Convos, the "Add more" button now seems to work for me where it never did before...

SoMuchToBits · 20/04/2022 16:42

And yes, I'm another "Classic" user, don't change things for the sake of it, use MN on my laptop and don't even have a smartphone!

heymammy · 20/04/2022 16:42

@ExhaustedChameleon I completely agree with this...

"The new layout looks like we've zoomed in, so my brain can't see the bigger picture"

It feels like I have to open my eyes really wide to get the whole post :( dislike

FairyLightPups · 20/04/2022 17:18

Yup, as an autistic person this new site is a total overload. Awful.

MN please have some of the neurodiverse community test the website!

CPL593H · 20/04/2022 17:23

Does anyone know where the 'refresh' option is or am I missing something (quite possible) ?

You can just refresh your browser as you would on any other site. Hardly any sites have onhpage refresh buttons any more.

ellebelli · 20/04/2022 20:32

Hate it-It is hurting my eyes and I can not be bothered to stay on, So I am going to bed to read a book.

ShowOfHands · 20/04/2022 20:35

I've been on MN since 2004 and always stuck with classic. Mine actually doesn't look too different to how it did before. There are a few changes but I'm not seeing a lot of what you describe here.

And I massively struggled with previous seemingly small changes.

Maybe it's how I access it? Never used the app for example and I haven't used the desktop site for a very long time.

Snowflakes1122 · 20/04/2022 20:37

Glad someone posted this, and I’m not alone in disliking this new design.

Not user friendly

frostedfruits · 20/04/2022 21:41

I'm sorry I'm finding it horrible too. Writing too big, gaps between sentences massive, hardly anything on a page so feels like too much hard work to read down and down, preferred the last page/next page, notifications take you right to start of threads ive been on for weeks and I have no idea which page to forward to to read latest posts, every click takes ages to load.

It just doesn't feel comfortable, it's all so big! It's making me leave the site a lot as I don't feel at all comfortable with it. I'm not neurodiverse either as far as I know, just find it clunky and awkward and it's getting me down.
Absolutely hate the 'nesting quotes' - that's going to take up so much space and I find them impossible to follow. Sorry.

SoMuchToBits · 20/04/2022 21:47

I also find the nested quotes impossible to follow!

HelloPudding · 20/04/2022 22:38

I'm finding it very uncomfortable visually. Not sure if it's the font, the layout or the large amount of glaring white text. It's making it difficult for me to read anyway.

SnowdropsInSpring · 21/04/2022 00:02

PurpleToeNail · 20/04/2022 11:46

It would be handy to have a few neurodiverse ppl cast an eye over a new format to point out difficulties & better ideas for colours/shapes/layout etc.

We've all had the option to do this for ages.

ShopoholicIn · 21/04/2022 00:12

I hate this too.. don't know how it got approved. I was not sure whymy MN is looking like this. So downloaded the app which is worse, purple n white. I am not sure if there's a change done in that but it's absolutely not user friendly.

UrsulaBursula · 21/04/2022 00:13

I like the new update.

people need to get used to it

Tallisimo · 21/04/2022 00:26

I agree that the line spacing is very odd, and that the colour … or lack of it …. makes things much harder to read (I use an iPad). And I do hope it’s not going to ask me to log in every single time, that will be annoying.

im finding the flashing and scrolling adverts most distracting and quite clunky. I know ads are important as they help fund the site, but these are just making me angry and not interested - not the effect advertisers are looking for, I’m sure!

it will be good to see how the new platform evolves as MN gets feedback from users.

Oh, and we still don’t seem to have an edit butto!

iampotato · 21/04/2022 00:46

The amount of ads really makes the new site a nightmare to use. I can deal with the 1 ad at the top but placing them through the thread is just awful. Bring back the classic version anyday!

Joanajoanna · 21/04/2022 00:57

This change is awful. I keep having to click off ads. Last time I did that, I took a break from MN

FiloPasty · 21/04/2022 01:08

Hate it too and cancelling my premium membership because it doesn’t really offer anything

Apileofballyhoo · 21/04/2022 01:17

Fedupsotired · 20/04/2022 12:53

But the different colours were always like that in the app!

I had the different colours for OP and my own posts on the mobile website, which is what I use most. It was just a setting.

Hate hate hate the OP's OP being at the top of every single page. Reading the same thing over and over and having to scroll down to get past it if it's a long one. The old thing of being able to choose to see it was fine. I haven't actually checked if it's possible to turn it off, I just thought of that now!

Agree with too much space so more scrolling though I can live with it and I'll get used to it, trade off being easier to see I suppose, though I dont need reading glasses yet. Also a speed reader so it means a lot of scrolling for me.

Dont like having to sign back in all the time either, but I wouldn't mind once a day or a choice of some sort e.g. a stay signed in button. Glad to see the MN emojis.

The new quote thing is very in your face. Too big too I think.

Love MN though!

bigyellowTpot · 21/04/2022 01:56

I've just started my own thread on my dislike for this new look as I didn't notice this thread.
Yes this new look is absolutely shit, I'm finding it not as easy to read it all seems like a bit of a jumble and I'm not ND. why can't they just leave things alone. If it ain't broke don't fix it and all that.
