Can we please have a MN Classic option for those who can't cope with the changes?

Would it be so difficult to have a MN Classic option - which we have always had, and which some of us have been using since the original format change - for posters who find the changing format difficult? There are many posters with neurodiversity, for example, who will probably stop posting here because it all abruptly looks and feels wrong Sad

FelicityPike · 20/04/2022 12:41

I don’t like it either. __

JustineMumsnet · 20/04/2022 12:42

This would actually be really difficult - one of the reasons for the instability of the old site was that we had so many different versions and variations. However, we are, I promise, working through the bugs and taking note of all the design issues/ requests and we can certainly look at making improvements and enhancements. The good news is that development is much easier on the new site, so, once we've ironed out the glitches we'll be able to make adjustments much more quickly.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 20/04/2022 12:42

Same, Greeny
I've been on here since 2004 and using classic.
This is all wrong! Wrong font, wrong spacing.

I read really quickly and this massively slows down the flow of information into my brain.

DoubleShotEspresso · 20/04/2022 12:44

Tis feels so incredibly dated and appears on my screen like old style Lycos chat forum.
Hate this new format and I am missing "Refresh" and "In last 15 minutes" buttons.
Really horrid feel to this sorry MNHQ-but this is awful-just why?

DinosaurOfFire · 20/04/2022 12:44

I agree with a lot of the posters- @Greensleeves the description of flowers being changed to packing noodles is a good analogy. And as a other neurodiverse speedreader, I agree with @ExhaustedChameleon and others that the structure of the text/ the colours in Active makes it very difficult to read properly without constantly scrolling. I didn't use classic but did find the previous style much easier on the eyes to read. Functionality seems improved- for eg @-ing someone is working now on mobile whereas it was frustrating before- but that functionality was not something I used a great deal of, the reading experience is what keeps me on mumsnet, rather than how easy it is to tag someone.

HellyR · 20/04/2022 12:46

I can't work out exactly what it is but something about the new site on my phone is making me slightly headachey and nauseous (no, I've not been on the gin or prosecco or whatever else MNers are supposed to neck by the bucketload... !)

LookItsMeAgain · 20/04/2022 12:46

Can I request a 'classic' view option too? I am not neurodiverse but I just don't like the look of the new layout. It's like it's neither new nor old, it can't make up it's mind what it's trying to do as the text on my screen is as it was in the old layout (with massive space to either side of the text/chat column) and the fonts have changed.

While I realise that updates had to happen at some point, these look clunky and not at all streamlined.

Also, CTRL + Enter used to post the message and it doesn't appear to do that anymore.

ExitpursuedbyaBore · 20/04/2022 12:46

No likey

milkyaqua · 20/04/2022 12:47

It hurts my eyes. It jumps all over the place. And it's slow to load the page. It's just so glary, I can barely type this message. And I don't want every thread I've ever been on leering at me in the "threads I'm on" section. They used to vanish nicely after a few days - and now they are going back months and months. Yes, one can manually hide them all, I suppose. But no. I really hate this new version.

AdditionalCharacter · 20/04/2022 12:47

Another hoping that we can have a classic format, I do not like the new format.

IWishIWasABaller · 20/04/2022 12:50

Oh it's awful 😞 why do things have to change. I'm getting pop up ad boxes now too as well

Fedupsotired · 20/04/2022 12:53

Cailin66 · 20/04/2022 12:06

Personally I'm really loving the new style. My posts are a different colour and so are the OP's so it's easy to find them. And just love I can now bold, underline or Italic so easily which was so difficult to do before now.

I know from other boards I'm on that it just takes a few days to settle into the new look - for those of you having difficulty today.

But the different colours were always like that in the app!

Fiefofum · 20/04/2022 12:55

Yeah, not a fan of the new look. Fonts are ick. It is working faster though, which is nice.

ronjobbins · 20/04/2022 12:55

Hate this new look, frankly it’ll limit my perusing time which is probably a good thing.

LaurieFairyCake · 20/04/2022 12:58

I’ve only ever used Classic - I can’t cope with the non stop movement when you’re scrolling - I didn’t have ads before and these ones are really animated, you’re constantly accidentally climbing on them !

bumblefeline · 20/04/2022 13:04

Hate the new site puts me off using it now. Makes me feel ill.

WanderinWomb · 20/04/2022 13:06

The new layout looks like we've zoomed in, so my brain can't see the bigger picture. Feel like I'm peering through a small hole

It's terribly impractical and headache inducing.

LizzieSiddal · 20/04/2022 13:08

It feels to me as if it’s an older, less good version of what we already had! It’s looks and feel just dreadful.

steppemum · 20/04/2022 13:09

I am open to the fatc things might need to change. But can we please give feedback about the new look?

  1. too pale, too white, doesn't read easily as the mn text boxes don;t stand out from all the ads and space around. I used to have purple OP boxes and green boxes for my posts and it is all pale blue and white. Colour please.
  2. too zoomed in. I can only see 2 posts at a time. I have good glasses, don't need the screen zoomed in! I thought I needed to reset my settings.
  3. mn only now takes up half of the screen on my laptop. I really really REALLY object to half the screen being ads. Make the ad bar smaller please
senua · 20/04/2022 13:09

I'm not a fan, either. Regarding width: this far down the page, I only get 6 inches of text to 13 inches of laptop screen. Regarding depth: because the line-spacing is so pronounced, I can only see about three posts at a time.

It all feels like it is floating in space in an inconsequential, unimportant way.

Like this!

DPotter · 20/04/2022 13:11

Have to agree with everyone else - it feels odd - wrong font, spacing. can't find some of my threads I'm watching. Surely we can have the old look on e new platform

gamerchick · 20/04/2022 13:14

This always happens when a forum moves to a new platform. People like to be eased in and sometimes it's just not possible, so is a shock to the system. I'm sure tweeks will be made.

YoshysMum · 20/04/2022 13:14

I really don't like the new site. I can only see a few lines at a time and scrolling makes my eyes hurt. I have cataracts so need for the site not to be so white and bland.

Crackersnack · 20/04/2022 13:15

Yes sorry have to agree with the glare and white background being a problem, also the zoomed in feeling. The brightness just makes me want to look away and turn it off and I'm already using a low-glare filter on my phone.

Lellochip · 20/04/2022 13:15

It wouldn't just be a case of applying the old style to the new platform, it would most likely need to be rebuilt from scratch to work with the new code
