Ideas for a black section on mumsnet.

Should we have separate sections i.e black hair and beauty, black parenting, black cooking or a general black section?

OP posts:
AMemeByAnyOtherName · 12/09/2020 14:54

@Dastardlythefriendlymutt I can't put my finger on it, but I feel like something is missing from the names. I was talking to DM about it yesterday and she suggested using the word Afro instead of black but I wondered if that could somehow be counterintuitive. We did both laugh at the idea of AfroNet though Grin

AMemeByAnyOtherName · 12/09/2020 14:57

I guess I just feel like the name needs to be more vibrant, like the cultures it will represent.

WorraLiberty · 12/09/2020 14:59

However, what I don't agree with is you saying, which I saw with my own eyes on another one of your threads 'if a white person talks in this section then they should be banned'

Except that wasn't what the OP said. If you mean her post at 05:29:11 on this thread it's probably best to go back and read it properly, in context.

Dastardlythefriendlymutt · 12/09/2020 14:59

I think OP will remember any other names. I do like AfroNet🤣🤣🤣.

BlackMet is really growing on me., the others just feel too long if that makes sense

AMemeByAnyOtherName · 12/09/2020 15:03

@WorraLiberty so not only is that not what Patricks said, but the initial idea was proposed by a white person Confused. People really are clutching at straws now.

iklboo · 12/09/2020 15:06

which I saw with my own eyes

Oooh. I usually see things with other people's eyes. Must be where I've been going wrong in not twisting OP's words to fit my own agenda.

captainjacksparrow · 12/09/2020 15:07

I’ve seen dadsnet get a few mentions, maybe a black dads topic/thread?

Just a suggestion. Smile

Ginkypig · 12/09/2020 15:08

This particular thread isn't about education though it was supposed be a simple thread by one black woman asking other black woman who use this site if they had any ideas or if there was any topic they would like to see or find helpful in a future section for black users.

Why then have a load of (mostly white) users then decided that this thread should be about the right to have a section at all or to complain that they aren't included etc

And when they didn't get the response they wanted and were told that their input wasn't wanted or needed they lost their shit.

I you want to learn or be educated shut the fuck up and listen! Dont invade places where people are just trying to have a quiet discussion to ask questions that have nothing to do with what they are talks about and then expecting that they will be happy to just drop everything and answer.

I have learned loads from this thread just by reading on this thread.

BlueThistles · 12/09/2020 15:17

Why is Mumsnet taking so long to create these new Sections? surely it's quick to do 🤔

Quaagars · 12/09/2020 15:22

@worraliberty
Thanks for the link, thought there must have been some context there!
As for this Shouldn't MN would stay above identity politics?
Mouth did an actual Shock jaw drop then, WTF - how is being black identity politics?
It's literally who you ARE!!
Jaysus.
Yes, posts like that seriously need to get in the bin under the banhammer

Shock Jesus.
Quaagars · 12/09/2020 15:24

Just realised I Jaysused and Jesused there, twice, totally flabbergasted lol

Dastardlythefriendlymutt · 12/09/2020 15:25

@captainjacksparrow the thread yesterday closed before I got to say I loved your witty responses. Glad you could join us.

And FFS can we have a space to ask questions and get support without being expected to out our needs aside to give you a history, civics or ethics lesson, convince you of our humanity, our lives experience, or prove whatever ridiculous bar you have set. I just want to know which conditioner to use not give you a lesson on biology, hairstyling, "good" hair, hair discrimination or why it's inappropriate for runway models to be wearing bantu knots and called edgy while I get discriminated for the same hairstyle which is part of my own culture. FFS.

captainjacksparrow · 12/09/2020 15:33

Genuinely when I first started reading I thought I was finally so sleep deprived I’d lost basic English and common sense.

Then I had a few coffees, reread and realised, no, it’s not me whose that thick...

PersephonePromotesEquanimity · 12/09/2020 15:40

?? Issues No. Seems odd to suggest that black people might only meet for negative reasons.

vibrant? Hmm I'm afraid I won't be performing "vibrancy" for anyone else's entertainment.

Anyway. As regards likely topics I mentioned Higher Education (more specifically Oxbridge entrance) and Travel (I have questions about Air BnB experiences). I don't have any strong feelings about structure for the board - but it would be good if people looking for health advice knew where to come. It's so frustrating when people start threads on, say, Sickle-Cell Anaemia, and the thread disappears from view before anything useful has been conveyed.

SoupDragon · 12/09/2020 15:48

Seems odd to suggest that black people might only meet for negative reasons.

I wasn't Confused

Quaagars · 12/09/2020 15:55

Obviously I am not qualified to comment but I was idly wondering whether a black section would make new posters think they were being corralled

They don't have to post on there, though?
Nobody knows anybody's skin colour on here unless stated.
A board for black conversations so to speak would be ideal if wanting specific advice, chat, from others who know what you're talking about/similar experiences, or if it's just general other generic stuff there's still the main boards to post on?
Nobody's forcing anyone to post on it.
Just another chat topic.

AMemeByAnyOtherName · 12/09/2020 16:08

@PersephonePromotesEquanimity I consider my heritage to be vibrant. That is why I said it.

Usergroundzero · 12/09/2020 16:13

If you change black to women and white to men these threads would be quite amusing if they wasn’t so dire.

Well done @PatricksRum. You did good.

PersephonePromotesEquanimity · 12/09/2020 16:27

Re-reading your post, SoupDragon - I can see you were only suggesting "Black Issues" as one topic amongst others. I probably conflated that thought with some other post somewhere that seemed to suggest the board would only be misery and wailing. Whereas I'm hoping it would, as much as anything, be a place to share triumphs and success in whatever people are interested in.

Meme - I come from grumpy, questioning, supercilious people ...Grin

EchoCardioGran · 12/09/2020 17:36

Usergroundzero Dire is the word. The use of language too, and the distortions of what has been said. DARVO.

AMemeByAnyOtherName · 12/09/2020 17:43

You and me both, Persephone GrinGrin

RubieRose · 12/09/2020 18:17

Great idea, thanks for suggesting it Smile

I love the 'Did that really happen?' idea. Wouldn't it be lovely to be able to post about experiences, without being told 'You clearly have a chip on your shoulder'

Some posters on this thread seem to think that OP was asking permission from white people to have this topic. She wasn't.

Why are people so threatened by the word Black? Why aren't we allowed to have any spaces from for ourselves without it being questioned and picked apart? If you don't like the topic, then don't visit it. 🤷🏽‍♀️

LastResorts · 12/09/2020 20:59

Been reading with interest.

Other PP have suggest
Black hair
education
Cooking

What about black entertainment, such as movies, documentaries, educational/interests/comedians

The site will need to be heavily managed as I can imagine it will attract a lot of racism - sorry just speaking honestly

AMemeByAnyOtherName · 12/09/2020 21:54

@LastResorts yes sadly we've already had to discuss that, we're hoping for dedicated night watch volunteers or alternatively, locking the boards overnight.

I really like the idea of a black entertainment section, including reading/literature as well as all of the things you mentioned. There are some gems out there that I'm sure I haven't even scratched the surface of.

BlueThistles · 12/09/2020 22:17

I disagree, just being honest 🌺
