Ideas for a black section on mumsnet.

Should we have separate sections i.e black hair and beauty, black parenting, black cooking or a general black section?

To be honest OP I was all with you for a BlackBet type affair but to have different categories is just IMO silly as I've said if I needed specific hair advice I post in style and beauty with my specific requirements. Same as if I was white I'd post specific requirements.
General chat - great, means there is space to talk and of course you could ask specific questions if you wanted as well.
However OP you seem to like goady threads

midgebabe · 11/09/2020 21:57

See you can post where you like, that's cool,

What you should not do is assume that because you are comfortable and happy everyone else is

PablosHoney · 11/09/2020 21:57

I’d imagine having a free space to talk about your experience of micro aggressions and out and out aggressions without people trying to minimise what you KNOW to be true because it happened to you would be more than welcome.

Dear Lord what a terrible idea. I hope someone at MNHQ has the sense to not run with it.

Too late. It's happening. With heavy moderation Wink

I think it’s a great idea. It’s obviously needed and wanted, and I’m surprised there’s not one already.

Obviously I know it’s not remotely the same, but I have twins. There’s a multiples board on here, where I can (if I want to) post to speak to other twin parents, or I can post on a general thread and get advice from everyone. I have choice

I’m sorry if I’ve worded this seriously badly, I mean zero offence to anyone. I just think a space for black topics gives a choice for posters.

Quite right.

Don't understand the uproar!

Trolling etc maybe?

Ginkypig · 11/09/2020 23:36

Fuck sake I posted too soon!

Why do you all care, it won't have any bearing on your user experience if a certain number of posters are chatting about specific things in a specific section

Dastardlythefriendlymutt · 11/09/2020 23:44

FFS, I like sporners corner. It is fun to watch gross videos. We post there so we dont have tons of comments about how disgusting the stuff is and how weird we are for watching it etc.

I also use the main site. It's existence literally detracts nothing from you if you dont like videos of pus and ingrown hairs, nails, cysts etc. I'm sure many of you don't even know it exists because you are not the target audience. (Sorry it's such a frivolous example but I'm tired of trying to explain nuance and draw parallels between sensible boards like Scotsnet, CraicNet etc.. and all the whataboutery that comes with it).

purpleboy · 11/09/2020 23:48

Hi Patrick I was on your previous racism threads and we had some lovely exchanges!

I think this is a great idea and the comments from some posters absolutely show why this space is needed.
Really looking forward to reading some of the threads especially the cooking ones!

Also want to say that whilst your responses are blunt, I think many of us can understand why that is, if the backlash on these threads are anything to go by, then what you experience on a daily basis must be horrifying. If I were you I don't think I could be so politeGrin

gingerfreckles · 12/09/2020 00:09

@PatricksRum op if you do not agree to a BAME section how exactly will you define who or what constitutes as BLACK to have in your black section?
We don't have a separate lesbian, bi, trans sections but we do have LGBT parents.
Creating such a divide makes no sense.

Very true. No offence taken, I love sporner's corner too Grin

Thank for your comment!

That's exactly why I'm so blunt --fed up

I've said before, I'm autistic so the emotion is usually taken out of my posts in general but in these threads it's mostly frustration.

Thanks for your continued support Smile

For the 50 billionth time...

A) we are having a black section. Couldn't give two fucks if you don't like it.

B) white people already segregated us.

C) if you want another section contact HQ [email protected]

Yes !!! to space for black voices on mumsnet…

The disingenuous efforts to derail this OP’s thread very illuminating! Sadly, many white posters feel entitled to police black MNetter choices, and dictate the priorities for black posters on what is acceptable.

My suggestions for topics in the black section / board:

Black - Health
Black - Afro Hair and Beauty
Black - Food and Recipes
Black - Education and Careers
Parenting Black children
Black Chat - Black Perspectives
Black Chat - I’m so Tired! Or I’m not racist but…

Love "I'm not racist but..." Maybe we can invite some of these posters to contribute to that one.
