Aitch.

OP posts:
ggglimpopo · 10/09/2007 20:08

For obvious reasons, I would far rather that there were no more McCann threads.

GGGLIMPOPO

Kewcumber · 10/09/2007 20:10

I think people find the nature of some of the rather lurid speculation distasteful given there is a missing four year old. We have been firmly (and quite rightly IMHO) told that freedom of speech blah blah and all that - but don't want to be associated with the speculation particularly given that some of the speculation is being quoted in the media under the MN name.

Kewcumber · 10/09/2007 20:11

it must be tortuous GGG , so sorry.

Rhubarb · 10/09/2007 20:12

Oh I do agree Kewcumber. I was with a little band of Mumsnetters huddled in the corner a couple of days ago wondering what was going on.

But I guess I've learnt that contributing to such threads does no good whatsoever and starting new threads only encourages those vile posters to visit your thread.

But this thread, I dunno. I'm not sure what it hopes to achieve exactly. To let new posters know that we don't all agree with threads? But the title doesn't make any reference to those threads, so newbies wouldn't know. Even I don't understand the Latin quote and it is a trifle offputting, and the media wouldn't even bother reading it. So are we all, as regulars, just expressing our displeasure to each other and MNHQ?

Hathor · 10/09/2007 20:13

Signing up to blu's statement, below, and apologising for reading and responding to the latest thread (which was benign as far as it went)
Hathor

?I have the utmost sympathy for the McCann family, and hope for a happy ending to their trouble. Meanwhile I am not happy about many aspects of the many [discussion] threads, and hearby resolve to completely boycott them by not clicking, not reading, nor responding (however horrible the views), and thus not adding to the circular and predictable route they take, no matter what quality of intervention is made.?

Rhubarb · 10/09/2007 20:14

And my natural cynicism is not dampened when I read names added to the list on this thread, contributing to the thread in active convos right now.

Hathor · 10/09/2007 20:14

Rhubarb. At least it is worth saying that to each other and new people, otherwise it looks as if everyone is only interested in discussing this case.

Hathor · 10/09/2007 20:16

Meaning me? I have not followed all the acrimonious threads, but did look at the one just now, then from there was directed to this thread.

So, in fact it worked. Hold on to your natural cynicism Rhubarb.

dressedupnowheretogo · 10/09/2007 20:16

add me too please

Rhubarb · 10/09/2007 20:16

They are registering their distaste but also adding little comments.

I'm sorry but there is more than a bit of hypocrisy going on here.

Kewcumber · 10/09/2007 20:16

I think many people are contibuting to the new McCann threads as MNTowers said that was their preferred method of objecting.

Mercy · 10/09/2007 20:17

I posted yesterday but haven't had time to to read the thread since then. But I have just noticed people posting something along the lines of 'I register my distaste' on another 'In the news' McCann thread.

If that is the intention of this thread then I think I may withdraw my support. That's not what I thought it was about.

Blandmum · 10/09/2007 20:17

If nothing else, then this thread has helped us to flag up how many people do dislike those threads. We stays away from them, but you can't 'see' people who don't post.

In part this may have helped the mumsnet team decide to write to the Guardian and point out that many of us don't agree with the sentiments quoted. I'm not sure if this thread was involved in their decision making or not! .

Now, the guardian may chose to ignore the letter, but at least MN tried to paint a clearer picture of general attitudes to the case as they existon MN.

Rhubarb · 10/09/2007 20:17

No Hathor, look at the list of names and then open the thread in active convos to read those same names registering their distaste and also adding comments at the same time.

I don't get it.

Hathor · 10/09/2007 20:17

Oh, and yes I was put off by the Latin and did not read this thread before. Mea culpe (or something like that!)

tiredemma · 10/09/2007 20:19

Im confused.

I really do not have a clue what is going on here- ( was away over weekend)

will try to catch up...

startouchedtrinity · 10/09/2007 20:19

GGG

However good Justine's letter might be I still think that Mnet is no longer fulfilling it original purpose as a place for parents to meet and find support if 'free speech' is put ahead of how upsetting so many people find the way this subject is being discussed here.

oh god who cares how the message is put across surely the point is to get across to all the freaks picking over every little tidbit like its the latest copy of fucking Heat that we're fed up with it.

Kewcumber · 10/09/2007 20:20

it was behind my decision to re-enter the fray. If threads on this subject are to be fair fodder for the media I would like it to be noted that there were plenty of people trying to make sensible comments. They may choose not to print it but its an easier point to make with a newspaper - "you didn't accurately report the thread" vs "but lots of our posters don't like the speculation, honest they just don't say anything about it"

Hathor · 10/09/2007 20:23

Could not believe the BBC 10pm news last night. Half the time spent discussing this case, in which there was no new news. Just lazy journalism. So many more things happening in the world I want to know more about. The TV news is so shallow in it's choice of subject matter.

Rhubarb · 10/09/2007 20:26

So if you are now choosing to post on the threads, what is the point in this one and the list?

moljam · 10/09/2007 20:28

i was away and am confused.
