Would you pay to go ad-free on the Talk App?

Hi guys, I’ve got a bit of an unusual question, bear with me!

Some of you have mentioned you would be willing to pay to go ad-free, so we’d like to know your collective thoughts if we offered ad-free Talk in the iOS app, with some extra benefits.

On the iOS Talk app, if you could have:
- Ad-free Talk
- Increased allowance of photos
- Extra Mumsnet Emoticons

Would you be willing to pay a monthly subscription? If so, what would be a fair amount? This wouldn’t affect any of the existing Talk features, which everyone would continue to get for free.

What peachgreen said.
I would pay a small fee to download an upgraded version of the utterly shit android app. That gave me options like ad free, changing post colours, highlighting, post direction etc etc. Actually I'd still pay if it kept the ads but was less shit.
I wouldn't subscribe.

PencilsInSpace · 04/07/2019 20:25

I was one of the people who suggested this. The idea was that everybody got the same content but if you subscribed you got an ad free version. So it wouldn't matter if the majority didn't want to subscribe, you'd just have to charge a small fee to make up for the lost ad revenue from those who did.

iOS users are suckers for ads anyway so it's not the best trial group.

I use an adblocker so my subscription would have been pure altruism - a way of saying thank you for the platform.

Just not feeling it lately.

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 04/07/2019 20:25

No I wouldn't pay. I barely notice the ads.

misskatamari · 04/07/2019 20:30

Nope from me too. I'd maybe consider it if it was a small one off payment to go add free (Altho still probably wouldn't). No way I would pay a monthly subscription though, that's just bonkers

dontatme · 04/07/2019 20:33

Absolutely not. And for the love of god please don’t start introducing huge amounts of intrusive ads to encourage us to pay for a subscription!

PencilsInSpace · 04/07/2019 20:35

If I were feeling less grumpy the additional features I would like as part of the subscription is to have all the old settings back - the ability to set 100 posts/page as default, threads staying on 'threads I'm on' for longer, ability to choose colour schemes etc.

Advertising should absolutely not be ramped up on the free version - that would kill the site.

Saucery · 04/07/2019 20:36

No, would find an ad blocker that works on my phone or stop using MN on ,my phone.

Free emojis? Grin Grin Didn’t think there could be anything more trivially patronising than bestowing a Glitterball upon the site but......there it is!

ahhgowan · 04/07/2019 20:36

No way would I pay for this Shock if the ads annoyed me enough that I was considering paying I just wouldn't use the app.

MsMarvellous · 04/07/2019 21:02

I'd perhaps pay a small (£.99-£1.49) one off fee for an app with enough added benefits but I wouldn't ever pay a monthly subscription for a forum. No way.

lostfrequencies · 04/07/2019 21:04

YABU

PancakesAndMapleSyrup · 04/07/2019 22:24

Nope, I wouldn't pay. I've stopped using YouTube a lot now as well because of their forced stupid ads every 2 bloody minutes now. I'd find another site.

itsabongthing · 04/07/2019 22:37

Ah... cunning! Make the ads more and more annoying so people start thinking in desperation they would pay for no ads!

No I wouldn’t - id put up with them but scroll past/not take any notice of what they are trying to sell me.

Sadiesnakes · 04/07/2019 22:42

Nope.

RosaWaiting · 04/07/2019 22:45

No, I’d just find another place to hang.

ch3rrycola · 04/07/2019 22:54

No

PickledChicory · 04/07/2019 23:58

No, I dont find ads annoying. Ok without heaps of emoji. Never posted a photo to mn but feel current limit ok its quite cluncky looking at photos anyway. In summary no to paying.

Sparklfairy · 05/07/2019 00:36

HappyLoneParentDay and others who would like to see only OP's posts, you can do CTRL+F on laptop or 'find on page' on phone for their username.

TBH MN you're not offering anything on a subscription that we can't really get for free with a workaround. I'm all for supporting MN but there's nothing in your list I would pay for!

roseinparadise · 05/07/2019 03:03

No

CheerfulChimp · 05/07/2019 03:36

No!

NatashaAlianovaRomanova · 05/07/2019 04:10

Ads have never bothered me previously as they were fairly unobtrusive but since reading this thread earlier today they've started taking over my screen.

If this continues I'll just stop using the app.

Would you pay to go ad-free on the Talk App?
LiliesAndChocolate · 05/07/2019 04:39

Why try to turn MN into something else?
I would never pay. And I would despise you a bit for this.

I accept MN is a business and so don't write too much about your crappy articles about McDonalds or gin you advertise directly or indirectly . But, would you stop promoting junk food from the "tell us what you think about ... " if the site went ad-free? It is still an ad, even if masked into a survey. The banners don't bother me. I ignore them.

Stormblessed · 05/07/2019 06:43

I would be tempted to pay a small one time fee if there were perks like filtering on op posts but never a subscription.

HoustonBess · 05/07/2019 07:05

You need a better product to be able to charge, tbh

BillywigSting · 05/07/2019 07:19

No.

I'd just go and waste all my time on reddit instead.

Footle · 05/07/2019 07:20

@NatashaAlianovaRomanova , that's weird, the banner ads took over the whole screen on my phone for a while yesterday. Haven't read the full thread so don't know if this happened a lot.
In answer to the OP, no
I wouldn't.
