Repeated pop up attempts

Today, while browsing MN, I have had repeated warnings that the site is attempting to open a pop up window.

I’ve never had this before - what’s changed? Is it legit? I’ve blocked each pop up attempt, so no idea what it is trying to open, or why.

(I’m browsing using an iPad mini, on Safari, iOS 11.2ish)

Same 'vmware' as at the top of the page.

That bespoke photo books ad isn't causing any problems, nor the Yorkshire water one; it's the German one with that bloke. As soon as it comes up, a pop-up is blocked. When the ad renews itself, another pop-up is blocked. Only seems to happen with that German VMware ad.
