Jeremy Corbyn - webchat to discuss self-identification of sex

Popchyk · 28/01/2018 11:32

On the Andrew Marr Show today, Jeremy Corbyn indicated that the Labour Party is in favour of a policy of people being able to self-identify as the opposite sex.

Could we get Jeremy Corbyn on Mumsnet to do a webchat in order to discuss the implications around this?

If he is unavailable, could we have another senior Labour figure?

Thank you

Yes, I agree that there are a number of issues that are linked to self-ID that are of great importance.

However, I'd hate to see a very wide debate that would enable a spokesperson to evade the real issues and spend ages in biscuit territory.

Anyways, the LP have to say yes to the webchat first.

Then we'll have some thinking to do.

Amazing! Please let this happen!

BeyondWitchbitchterf · 29/01/2018 22:22

Another yes please

Would it be really, really greedy of me to ask if you could approach all of the other main party leaders about it too?

WichBitchHarpyTerfThatsMe · 29/01/2018 23:40

I nominate Datun to be our main spokeswoman.

We should get a short set of questions, agreed amongst ourselves beforehand, to keep the focus.

Also maybe a list of us who have left the LP as a direct result of this issue could be prepared beforehand, kept at the ready to present to him? I started a thread about this recently and quite a few people posted on it.

If he refuses to do it, or isn't 'available', we should find a more public and mainstream forum to publicise that decision on. This issue is getting into the mainstream press now so it isn't as niche as it was a few months ago.

MissBeehiving · 30/01/2018 07:51

Agree about keeping focussed but whoever comes on from the LP needs to understand the number of women who are concerned about this - perhaps the same questions but worded differently and posted by us all?

BonjourMinou · 30/01/2018 09:09

Yes, yes, yes, yes please! (But not holding breath tbh)

GoodyHemlock · 30/01/2018 09:09

Adding my name to this

Ekphrasis · 30/01/2018 09:17

78th ed.

It might be worth mentioning to him that we have had a few transwomen joining in and contributing to our discussions, as well as a few men, so this isn't 'just' women of mn. It's been a safe place to discuss our gender critical concerns and experiences.

Ekphrasis · 30/01/2018 09:18

I second datun as our main spokeswoman.

dorade · 30/01/2018 14:07

Another vote for Datun

2018username · 30/01/2018 14:14

I too would like to vote for Datun. In fact I'd like JC to Fuck off and Datun take over his shit show of a party and sort it out (sorry, getting a little cross now Blush)

SchrodingersFrilledLizard · 30/01/2018 14:16

Datun gets my vote, too.

Myunicornfliessideways · 30/01/2018 15:48

yes yes to Datun.

KalaLaka · 30/01/2018 16:01

Agree!

MrsTerryPratchett · 30/01/2018 16:03

Be nice to have @MirandaYardley on as well for a rational TIM perspective.

WichBitchHarpyTerfThatsMe · 30/01/2018 16:57

MrsTerry that's a great idea too! Wonder if Magdelene Berns would be interested? Does anyone on here know her?

3 Wise Women v JC!

BeyondWitchbitchterf · 30/01/2018 17:02

Oo how about Steph davies-arai too? If we're creating a mini panel!!

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 30/01/2018 17:23

Would it be really, really greedy of me to ask if you could approach all of the other main party leaders about it too?

YY. I'd like to see this too. And there are a lot of voters on MN...

Datun · 30/01/2018 17:59

Oh my god, the pressure!

Believe me, I will be asking questions. (Should he come...)

I will deffo talk a good talk, but don't always have the background and analysis stats like people such as pencils, donkey, Barraker and many others.

Plus, I really can't see you lot sitting on your hands!!

#teameffort

Frankly, Jeremy Corbyn needs to hear from women. All of them. The only expertise you need is that you are one.

I shall go off to formulate incisive and impressively erudite questions.

Fromage · 30/01/2018 17:59

The Labour Party are losing my vote on this issue at the moment, so I'd like a webchat too.

And if he can't do a webchat, how about I self identify as Jeremy Corbin and speak for him in the way transwomen apparently can speak for me, because if that's perfectly fine, let's all identify as Jeremy Corbin. [Spartacus]

FaithHopeCharityDesperation · 30/01/2018 20:19

Adding my support to this too Smile

Lottapianos · 30/01/2018 21:25

'And if he can't do a webchat, how about I self identify as Jeremy Corbin and speak for him in the way transwomen apparently can speak for me, because if that's perfectly fine, let's all identify as Jeremy Corbin'

Grin I'd much rather stick with being a woman than being Jeremy Corbyn. That way, I have my integrity and my principles intact, and I don't have youngsters singing stupid embarrassing chants at me everywhere I go

Fromage · 31/01/2018 09:48

Oh I'm going to be both. I'm going to maintain and benefit from my female privilege and be Jeremy Corbyn, that's how it's done, it seems. On Fridays I'll also be a giraffe called Ian, and on Feb 29ths I'll be Boris Johnson.

None of which is ridiculous at all. Oh, and when I feel like it, I'm going to self identify as a disabled person so I can use their loos. If I'm hungry, I'll identify as a homeless person and go to a soup kitchen. It's my right. After all, I'm Jeremy Corbyn.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 31/01/2018 09:54

Yes please. I note from Twitter that nearly 5000 memberships of the Labour Party elapsed or were terminated last week, the highest fall since Corbyn became leader. This could be because some of them were one-year memberships taken out shortly after his election that have now ended because the member never renewed, but I don't think it's coincidental that last week Labour started suspending women members associated with the crowdfunder to pay for legal advice on the implications of self-ID for all women's shortlists.

If I had a membership, I'd certainly have cancelled it by now. They need to start listening to women, and I mean really listening, not just nodding and smiling.
