Jeremy Corbyn - webchat to discuss self-identification of sex

Popchyk · 28/01/2018 11:32

On the Andrew Marr Show today, Jeremy Corbyn indicated that the Labour Party is in favour of a policy of people being able to self-identify as the opposite sex.

Could we get Jeremy Corbyn on Mumsnet to do a webchat in order to discuss the implications around this?

If he is unavailable, could we have another senior Labour figure?

Thank you

Hi All,

Our Press dept is still chasing office about this.

As we have said before we can't promise anything, but we are doing all we can.

hipsterfun · 05/03/2018 10:09

Keep up the good work Smile

Popchyk · 05/03/2018 10:10

Thank you, Jen.

We all know the delay in communication is not on the side of Mumsnet at all.

Seconding @Popchyk

We know you're doing what you can.

Weezol · 05/03/2018 12:45

Thirding.

OlennasWimple · 05/03/2018 12:50

Thanks for the update

(He really is scared of us, isn't he....?)

gussyfinknottle · 05/03/2018 13:45

I think he doesn't think women's opinions are important enough (and I know there are plenty of men on MN)We are a "minority " that he will bother with when it suits him.

FaithHopeCharityDesperation · 05/03/2018 14:28

He already ticked the 'appeal to women box' though during the election - when he spoke to us at length about jam.

DancingLedge · 05/03/2018 14:40

Given that women's safe spaces etc is a HUGE issue, why are we just wanting to discuss this with Corbyn?

I realise this thread arose out of JC saying he wanted to talk about it, on Andrew Marr's show.

But, as concerned women, don't we need to be talking to ALL the UK political parties?

The Conservatives are in power, and seem to be dithering. Don't MN need to invite them to hear what so many of us are thinking?
And the Lib Dems? And the Greens?

Who thinks the power of MN should be speaking to political parties across the board?

misscockerspaniel · 05/03/2018 16:09

I agree with DancingLedge and suggest the Tory MP Margot James on the grounds that she is a Minister of State who has re-tweeted a Janice Turner article.

EmpressOfJurisfiction · 05/03/2018 17:12

I think the most important thing is that whoever comes is very clear that we want a discussion on self-ID and the GRA.

I also think that if trans rights activists can hijack this they will, so earlier ideas on the thread about a specific list of questions, or maybe inviting a specific group of MNers to have the conversation, are good ones. We know MN won't be scared off hosting, but it's harder to keep the "BURN IT DOWN!"* brigade out of an online space than it is to keep them out of a building.

*I can call them that because I was sitting in the Speakers' Corner meeting listening to them yelling "BURN IT DOWN!"

Popchyk · 07/03/2018 12:34

Any news, MNHQ?

SophieLMumsnet · 08/03/2018 09:18

No news, we're afraid - sorry! We've chased, but haven't had a response yet. Flowers

Popchyk · 08/03/2018 09:46

Thanks for the update, Sophie.

I know MNHQ pushed hard for it.

It is not you, it is them.

OP posts:
TheButterflyOfTheStorms · 09/03/2018 00:05

So basically that means they're not interested, right? Over a month and no response at all...

Let's hope MNHQ and the MN Massive take that into consideration next time Labour need anything, including our votes. I won't forget that we aren't important enough to engage with. I've voted Labour in most of the General Elections for the last 3 decades. I won't make that mistake again.

DancingLedge · 09/03/2018 00:18

So if we are getting the impression Labour are bottling it, could MNHQ now extend the same invitation to the other political parties?

Firstly, if Labour won't, another might accept, and I don't really care if their motive is political point scoring, so long as it opens up discussion.

Secondly, if neither Labour, Conservatives, LDems or Greens will come and interact with this huge largely female audience, what will that look like? That will be a public declaration that no British Party will listen to women , on something that affects women.
What an admission that would be!

gussyfinknottle · 09/03/2018 06:58

Agree Dancing. If the special one doesn't want to make time for MN, or his acolytes don't see how many people it could reach, ask othe parties. Ask Amber Rudd, for example- Home Secretary.

LaContessaDiPlump · 09/03/2018 07:03

Why don't we have a Twitter push? Everyone who's comfortable to tweet the following could do so:

'When are you coming on Mumsnet to discuss the implications of self-identification, @JeremyCornyn? MNHQ invited you on 'date' and have chased several times, but still no reply from your office. I wonder why?'

TheGoalIsToStayOutOfTheHole · 10/03/2018 19:51

He is basically ignoring us and hoping sticking his head in the sand is good enough. Fuck him. He does not care about women at all.

I am so buggered for the next election. I cannot vote for Labour in the state they are in. And I have always voted Labour (despite disagreeing with a fair few policies)

YetAnotherHelenMumsnet · 13/03/2018 13:32

Hi all,
Just keeping you in the loop to say that the relevant team IS still chasing this.

FaithHopeCharityDesperation · 13/03/2018 13:47

Following Leanne Wood (Plaid Cymru Leader)'s condemnation of A Woman's Place, I'd quite like her to be extended an invite too.

YetAnotherHelenMumsnet · 13/03/2018 16:24

Okay doke. An update of sorts.
We've mailed three times, and no reply, so we are going to put that down as a no.

Popchyk · 13/03/2018 16:27

Fair enough, Helen.

Thanks for the update.

Is there a link to Leanne Wood's comments, please?
