Jeremy Corbyn - webchat to discuss self-identification of sex

Popchyk · 28/01/2018 11:32

On the Andrew Marr Show today, Jeremy Corbyn indicated that the Labour Party is in favour of a policy of people being able to self-identify as the opposite sex.

Could we get Jeremy Corbyn on Mumsnet to do a webchat in order to discuss the implications around this?

If he is unavailable, could we have another senior Labour figure?

Thank you

I've only just seen this. Yes please!

hipsterfun · 05/02/2018 10:48

Come on, MNHQ.

Did you ask or not?

If you did ask, what was the response?

OlennasWimple · 05/02/2018 15:44

I don't think JC will do this, and I don't think any senior Labour party member will do it either

LornaMumsnet · 05/02/2018 16:47

Helloooo,

A bit of a non-update but we just wanted to let everyone on this thread know that we have asked them and we've not yet heard back. We'll give it a nudge in a few days time.

Fekko · 05/02/2018 16:48

Don’t hold your breath...

Popchyk · 05/02/2018 16:51

Thanks for letting us know, Lorna.

Just seen this. If JC or another senior LP figure cannot attend, it will speak volumes.

hipsterfun · 05/02/2018 17:19

One might wonder if the LP, having painted themselves into a corner on self-ID, have neither the wisdom nor the courage to be honest about it and take a different course.

SmurfOrTerf · 05/02/2018 17:52

Well he never made contact with Linda Bellows so why would he come. Does he actually know that women have the vote ?

WichBitchHarpyTerfThatsMe · 12/02/2018 01:23

Any update on this MNHQ?

PositivelyPERF · 12/02/2018 01:33

They’ll never agree to it, because they know they are in the wrong but will want to coax the younger votes. If they give honest answers or can’t give coherent answers, to questions put forward by mumsneters, they will lose those voters. Or they will cherry pick the questions from the inevitable influx of TRAs and their handmaidens.

Fekko · 12/02/2018 07:32

Tell them it’s a Glastonbury off shoot or college website.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 12/02/2018 07:49

They're fools if they don't grasp that they are losing women's votes at the moment.

And we're the women whose votes they're losing. I'm not a party member but I've been voting Labour since I turned 18 in the 1990s. I don't dare right now.

Datun · 12/02/2018 08:01

I wonder if they know there has been thread after thread here of women saying they are cancelling their memberships and subscriptions? And generally, for every poster there are dozens, if not hundreds, of lurkers.

DamnDeDoubtanceIsSpartacus · 12/02/2018 08:05

I've left the labour party over this issue. Politicians need to stop dodging this issue and answer the questions, it's what they are elected to do.

ApacheEchidna · 12/02/2018 08:14

Oh I do hope the Web chat is agreed.

One of the questions needs to be something like: "under the proposed Self ID system, what protection will there be for women on the ASD spectrum? Such women frequently (especially if their ASD is undiagnosed) mistake their alienation from female gender stereotypes for gender dysphoria. With no checks or assessments such women are likely to undergo transition and find their sense of alienation is not relieved, and will then be at even greater risk of self harm and other mental health issues. How can a self ID system help people who are genuinely mistaken in this way?"

DamnDeDoubtanceIsSpartacus · 12/02/2018 08:25

also what are the Labour party going to do to challenge harmful sex stereotypes?

OldBlueStitches · 12/02/2018 09:02

Another one hoping this goes ahead.

If they didn't know already, they will now! blogs.spectator.co.uk/2018/02/jeremy-corbyn-has-a-new-enemy-mumsnet/

"[Self-ID] for now, is the hottest political flashpoint in the gender debate. And if you read Mumsnet, it could be the spark that ignites a full-blown political firestorm, where women abandon Labour in droves. Mumsnetters are girding for war and have armed themselves with a hashtag: #labourlosingwomen, a banner that also covers concerns about the Corbyn leadership’s somewhat macho attitude to the treatment of Labour women who don’t worship St Jeremy and the way allegations of sexual wrongdoing by some Corbyn allies have been handled."

Popchyk · 12/02/2018 12:28

Any update, MNHQ?

It has been two weeks. I know the delay is not on Mumsnet's side but could you ask them again?

You only need to ask one question; whether they intend to consult with the biggest female forum in the UK regarding the proposed self-identification of sex or not.

If so great, let's set it up.

If not, could they please identify those groups whose views they actually are considering?

They intend to announce the results of this consultation in March so time is against us.

Again, thanks for asking.

I'd hope the James Kirkup article might concentrate Labour minds a bit.

FaithHopeCharityDesperation · 12/02/2018 12:46

Would it be worth tweeting the another of the spectator article to highlight the fact that JC has been invited to MN to discuss his position, but seems to be ignoring us?

Would be a good follow up comment for his article maybe?

(I'm not on Twitter, or I'd have done it!)

EmpressOfJurisfiction · 12/02/2018 12:47

Great idea Faith.

Popchyk · 12/02/2018 12:51

Spectator link

MNHQ, this is the link to the Spectator article stating that Jeremy Corbyn has a new enemy in Mumsnet. I've included it in case you wished to refer to it in your communication with the Labour Party.

Anything else I can help with? Smile
